“More of a side visit”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 June 2014 via mobile

When something is explained to you, you become enlightened. In my visit to this lava channel within the Tortoise Reserve, I fell into the unenlightened category.

I was there with the cab driver and it was just another tunnel. I could not appreciate the texture of the walls or the formation of the channel or whatever someone knowledgeable can point out.

So, if you could grab a guide, perhaps you should and enjoy a more enlightened visit than I did.

“Best at sea on Isabela Island”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 June 2014

There are multiple lava tunnels on the islands. If you've been in caves in the US, you'll be disappointed with the lack of stalagmites and stalactites. They're interesting on land, but you wouldn't be missing much. We did a lava tunnel tour (Los Tunels) on Isabela Island, by boat, and it was fabulous. It's a beautiful landscape and a great place to snorkel. The boat ride out is pretty rough this time of year.

“Skip this if you have limited time in Santa Cruz”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 April 2014

We stopped here on our way back from Garrapatero Beach, but I would not recommend going to the tunnels unless you are in the same situation, or unless you're a geologist. We did not find it very interesting and the woman working there was not able to provide a lot of information about how the tunnels formed, even in Spanish.

Next to the giant tortoises on Santa Cruz islands.
Interesting lava rock formation.
A cool place to escape the sun.

“Lava Tunnels Are Everywhere”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 January 2014

The entire island of Santa Cruz appears to be riddled with lava tunnels. They range from smaller narrower tunnels to one that is the size of a subway system and over a mile long. We toured two tunnels, and they were worth the effort. However, you should probably go with a guide or naturalist so that you can best appreciate what you are seeing and experiencing.
