“Not so hospitable management”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 April 2010

We came to this hotel through a tour arrangement and was placed in a room that was much inferior quality (with red ant infestation and a toilet 2-ft away from the bedpost) than our groupmates because the occupants of the assigned room decided to extend their stay. We did not like the arrangement but still took the room because the management said they had no other rooms. On top of this aggravation, that evening when our group of 5 adults asked for a bottle of wine instead of 5 individual glasses, they began calculating the cost. After their mess-up with our room, I thought they would actually offer the wine complimentary.

When we realized that they were not sorry for the inconvenience they caused to us, but in fact were oblivious, we complained about our room. The lady that assisted Teppy (the owner) told us that this was what we got for the price we paid and the previously arranged room was an upgrade not the room we could have normally gotten with what the Travel Ecuador pays them! She continued to add that they would move us to a better room, which was an upgrade without extra charge so we should be thankful. When I did not show appreciation, she told me that they had a choice, not us, not to move us. Upon my mentioning about writing our experience at the Tripadvisor, she recommended that I should take it to the Travel Ecuador not to the Tripadvisor. While we were leaving for the day, Teppy assured that they would move us to a better room. I said it would not matter because the damage was already done. After we returned from our excursion, we found that they moved us to a nice room with an incredible view.

Even though later they tried to make up for their ignorance, we still can't get over their audacity to treat a customer this way. If they treated us respectfully, we would have been more understanding and tolerant of the circumstances. If they cannot make their customers feel comfortable, they should not be in a hospitality business.

Prior to our arrival at the Santa Cruz, we spent time in San Cristobal, where we camped and Isabela, where we stayed in a hotel that was definitely not a 5-star accommodation and had a few species of creepy crawlies in the room. However, at every place we stayed, the hotel staff and locals were truly genuine and helpful trying accommodate our requests with their limited resources. We felt very welcomed.

Other than untactful management, the hotel itself was good quality and clean, but there was nothing special about it that was authentic. If you are there to experience ethnic culture, nature and are ecologically conscientious, this is not the right hotel. The hotel and the food was more European than Galapagian/Ecuadorian. Even the Galapagian staff did not act relaxed. We did not feel the same authenticity that we felt at the other places.

Angermeyer was our favorite hotel in the Galapagos (we stayed in two others). It has a very scenic and romantic location right on the waterfront. The rooms were nice and the owner asked us to let us know if the construction noise ever bothered us (we were out on snorkeling trips during the day, so it was not a problem). The construction of the new wing should be finished by the time this review is posted, although Teppy decided to postpone the swimming pool as all the work building the new rooms has left him exhausted and cash-strapped. Breakfasts are a treat and our room was very pleasant with a balcony with a table overlooking the harbor.

We had a five night stay as part of our honeymoon at this hotel. We loved the location - Teppi and Elsie were great company. As many other people have mentioned the breakfast is fantastic. There is so much food that it is actually a little bit intimidating.

What we weren't told before staying was that there is currently a lot of construction noise which starts soon after seven and continues for most of the day. During our stay a patio / pathway was being re-laid so the bricks were being cut with power tools. A very large extension is being built as part of the hotel (I fear that this will ruin the intimate nature of the current b and b setup) - this work will be ongoing until Christmas (they have bookings so need to get it finished). In the bay is a very large and beautiful but decayed boat which is being renovated by the hotel owners and this also provides more unwelcome noise.

This said we had a wonderful stay and were given a complementary room upgrade with lovely views. I am left feeling a little cheated that we weren't told about the scheduled building noise - especially as it was our honeymoon. I would recommend but be aware of the building works.

Because of the huge credit card surcharge it is possibly advisable to pay cash.

First off, I totally agree with wrldtrav80 on their review and comments. The rooms, location ($4 for 2 people on a water taxi every round trip to town in the evening) and breakfast are all very good and on their own, worth the substantial fare. Teppy, the owner, left me feeling mentally exhausted and financially pilfered when all was said and done. The stories continually evolve into somewhere between unbelievable and 'this guy must also sell used cars on the side'. No Teppy; Bill and Hillary Clinton did not stay at your Hotel last year, As someone who works 'extremely' close with the Secret Service, they would never allow a past President and current presidential candidate to be placed in such an unsecure environment. To add to wrldtrav80's concerns I validated most of the exhorbinent overcharges. Teppy will tell you stories on how most of the town taxi drivers are both underage and drunk....except the one he will set you up with. A two hour ride from town to the lava tubes and turtle ranch cost between $15 and $25 when I asked several taxi drivers.....booked by Teppy, it's $50! A very nice day trip to the Plazas hosted by Finch Bay resort costs $280 retail if you just walk the five minutes to Finch Bay and book it at their desk......booked by Teppy, it's $400 for two people! An overcrowded, but nice day trip to Floreana costs $150 as advertised in the brochure on the boat....booked by Teppy, it's $240. These are not understandable $10 or $20 surcharges for making a few phone calls but it's outright gouging of his customers.....and I bet he didn't pay full retail price either. The coup de grâce was when I checked out and paid the final bill....couldn't use a credit card (they charge him 8% per transaction); so I wrote out a personal check to Angermeyer Waterfront Inn (of course there was a $5 fee for paying with a personal check!). He looked at the check and said that (he didn't have an account to deposit a check made out to "Angermeyer Waterfront Inn") so.......I had to void that check and guess who he wanted the check made out to....you guessed it: "Teppy Angermeyer". In the United States that kind of activity is called felony tax evasion; I wonder what they consider it in Ecuador?

After checking into a hotel we were very disappointed about, we decided to look for other accomodation. By "chance" we found the Angermeyer Waterfront Inn and we felt this was the place for us. All the rooms of the hotel were booked so we were offered the house located behind the hotel. It was clean and spacious and we were very happy. During breakfast we could enjoy the fantastic view of the bay.
Thank you Teppy for a wonderful time!!!

Don't be fooled by other reviews giving a glossy image to this hotel. Yes, rooms are nice/clean and the breakfast is a tasty and generous affair. That said, while the local staff are indeed an asset, the owner Teppy and his aloof helper Elsie are a liability to an otherwise promising business. Guests should be forewarned that Teppy is quirky and only knowledgable about the islands to the extent it suits his best interest (read: wallet). Definitely book any excursions yourself and in advance - not through the hotel. They greatly overcharge and scare you into thinking outfits they don't reccomend are a gamble. Additionally, claims they are near a pool that you can take advantage of (at the Finch Bay) are misleading. In fact, to use the pool you have to spend $25 per person or more at the Finch's restaurant - hardly worth the expense. In short, if you go for the rooms and breakfast and avoid any other services/tours they offer, the Angermeyer is fine. That said, other hotels are probably worth a look where the management is less self-interested, and more helpful.

He doesn't advertise, so the owner of this place, Teppy Angermeyer, is rarely overwhelmed with bookings. Teppy, the highly engaging Danish/German owner, host and master-of-all-he-surveys, has a small empire in this part of the islands -- several boats (including a schooner that takes on people at $10,000 per person, per week), several properties, and several other business interests. Since he doesn't have the financial pressure of having to keep the inn constantly full, he and his staff have more time to mingle with each of the guests -- and it's an experience not to be missed. Day tour get canceled at the last minute? Don't worry, Teppy knows everyone: he'll make a call or two and have you on another tour right away. Let Teppy know what time you have to get away in the morning, and he'll have a ginormous breakfast ready for you -- the most dazzling I've seen at any hotel. The back bungalows are a bit austere and remote, but the original bungalows around the main house offer a tremendous deal and very nice amenities, including kitchens. You really owe it to yourself to stay here.
