We stayed at the hotel for 4 nights and we booked it in advance via internet. Our room costed U$S 40. As we were there, we found out other people with rooms exactly like ours was paying U$S 30. Plus, the owner offered to sell us tickets for our trip to Isabella, and also for a tour to Floreana island. She over-charged us 10 dollars in each trip, obviously we found out about this later. We were not satisfied with the explanation she gave, which was also given in very bad terms.
The hotel is OK, but there are a lot hotels for the price that are the same quality, I would not recommend it. It is really noisy, you can hear EVERYTHING that happens in every room. And breakfast was U$S 5, and it wasn´t worth it, we had a superb breakfast for the same money plus taxes at The Rock, and at a small place near Laguna Las NInfas.

I pretty much trek around South America solo (single male) and -- while I'm a "bargain shopper" -- I'm not a high-maintenance, luxury traveler. I basically have 4 qualification criteria for every place I stay: Secure, clean, hot water, and a great location (all in that order).

When I stayed at Hotel Espana (Puerto Ayora, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador) in late January 2010, it fit all of those requirements. The hotel also offered a fine (not fancy) $3 breakfast each morning of eggs, bread rolls, coffee, and juice. Prices for a single bed, private bathroom, air-conditioned room (A/C was VERY much worth the extra $5/night!) ran $30/night.

The "main drag" of Puerto Ayora is only 2 short blocks away, a great location. Esther and the staff at Hotel Espana speak Spanish and English (the only two I speak, but MAYBE other languages as well). I happily recommend Hotel Espana.

My wife and I stayed at the Espana from April 6th to the 10th and again on April 17th. Our rooms had one double bed and a single bed, air conditioning, TV, private bath, hot water, windows, and daily maid service. The rooms were clean, the beds comfortable, and the air conditioning was a blessing. The air conditioning in the 2nd room had a rattle, but we didn't complain as we slept like logs.

Esther, the front desk receptionist and concierge, speaks excellent english and was always friendly, smiling, and polite. She provided us with a wealth of informaton about points of interest on the island within walking distance of the hotel. She also arranged for us a wonderful tour of the highlands with a taxi driver that she knew.

The Espana offers a very good breakfast for $4 that includes eggs, bread, juice, and coffee.

The hotel is close to downtown and the Galapagos National Park (a 15 minute walk) where we would go early in the mornings to see the giant tortoises wake up. It is also close to the "Agua Galapagos" distribution center where we could purchase a jug of drinking water for only one dollar.

Although we always seemed to be on the go, many guests took advantage on the common area in the lobby to chill out on the hammocks and chairs available to all.

We would return to the Espana in a heartbeat for a future stay in Puerto Ayora.
