“Best B&B in Galapagos”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 September 2013

My husband and I had the most wonderful experience at Jean's House last week. We are so pleased we selected this beautiful house to enjoy our Galapagos vacation. Gundi keeps the house in mint condition and ensured we had a delicious breakfast each morning to start our day. She helped us plan our days and even helped us prepare our live lobsters for dinner. We had great conversations about the history of the islands and her passion really shows. I highly recommend Jean's House when visiting Galapagos. Nothing else compares. It will truly be a highlight of your vacation with many memories to cherish. We will never forget our time there.

I have to say, I was a little unsure at staying at a b&b as I like my privacy when I am vacationing. But we felt truly comfortable from the moment we arrived at the dock. Gundi was waiting when we arrived and picked up as many suitcases as she could handle, and along we went. The water taxi only takes a minute, but what I soon realized, is that they are only a couple minutes away from everything in town, but the place is quiet and truly peaceful, so you can relax which I am sure you would not experience in a hotel in the town itself. Gundi provided an amazing homemade breakfast and gave us plenty of valuable advice for our stay, but after we were left alone to relax and given ample privacy. She was available when we needed her however, and after we left to return home, Gundi called to mention our daughter had forgotten a stuffed animal. Without hesitation she promptly shipped the item to us without us even asking. It was a very special item for our daughter, but Gundi did not know this, and we are truly grateful for her thoughtfulness. She also provided toys to keep our kids entertained and they had ample space to feel comfortable, rather then being cooped up in a hotel room, as they had been at other points in our vacation.

I would not hesitate to recommend this location to friends, and if you truly want a place to feel comfortable and peaceful, I highly recommend. If you are more into the entertainment/partying atmosphere, you may be better off to stay in a hotel on the main drag in Puerto Ayora.

Upon my delayed arrival Puerto Ayora, Gundi was waiting for me at the dock like a long lost friend. A quick boat taxi ride and we disembarked near Jean's Home. Gundi is your host and she is amazing-- she was born on the Islands and she knows everything and everybody. Ask about the history of this home as it is a marvelous story about another amazing woman-- Jean. The place is storybook, cozy, great amenities and very near La Playa de Alemans and Las Gretias. Both are in walking distance from Jean's Home and worth your time. The house is super organized, clean, spacious rooms and top shelf showers. Breakfast is huge and lovely.

The islands made me feel as though I was Alice in Wonderland as I was constantly coming across animals for which I had never seen and landscape that seemed surreal. One of my best trips ever!!

We stayed in Jean's Home in late April / early June for four nights. It was a great place to stay. Gundi (who runs the place and cooks a great breakfast every morning for you) was incredibly helpful. She met us on the dock at Puerto Ayora when we arrived looking lost, she was full of advice for the best places to go in the limited days that we had available to us, she probably saved me from sunstroke and she even gave me a birthday present on my birthday! The room was spacious with lots of light. The bathroom was grand. You have full access to the kitchen and lounge area - so you can do self catering if you want. But there are lots of great places to eat a short walk or boat trip away. And great walks down to the beach / water from the property as well. You need to get a short 3 minute water taxi out to Jean's Home, but this is just another reason to love the place - the taxi service is regular, cheap and easy. Wi-fi is not really running properly at the moment, but Gundi is looking to fix that soon. A fine place to stay.

Room Tip: You can stay in a room in the main house or a self contained bungalow in the garden. We stayed in a...

We stayed at Jean's Home for 9 days in April. Gundi truly goes out of her way to insure that guests have a great vacation. She gave us many recommendations for day tour boat operators and places to visit - and everything she suggested was worth visiting. Reviews from other guests of the house and rooms and her great breakfasts, are just as we would rate it - 4 stars for value and suoerb location. Gundi is a true original and a delight!

Gundi who owns this place is so kind, helpful and informative. She knows everything there is to know about Galapagos and speaks English, Spanish and German which is really useful. We stayed in the four-bed bungalow which has a kitchen. It was a wonderful place to stay at on our last night in Galapagos. You take a river taxi from Puerto Ayora for a few minutes to get to Jean's Home where there are no cars so it is really peaceful. Thank you Gundi for everything. Jean's Home truly is a beautiful place to stay.

During our recent visit to the Galapagos we stayed three nights at Jean’s Home in Puerto Ayora.

Jean’s Home is a Bed & Breakfast on the other site of the harbour of Puerto Ayora. There is no road to that part of the town so you have to take the water taxi for 60 cents a person. On the first day Gundi, the owner, picks you up at the harbour to show you the way. It is a very short walk, maybe 100 meters, after the water taxi.

The property consists of a main house with two rooms, a kitchen and a living room. In the garden there are five (I think) other rooms, one attached to the house. The other four in two separate cottages. One cottage in the front and one cottage in the back of the garden. We stayed in one of the rooms inside the house.

The room is very spacious with two big, comfortable beds. Enough space for a family with two (maybe even three) young kids. Also the bathroom was big. We had hot water during our entire stay and the water pressure in the shower was one of the best we had in Ecuador. The entire property is kept spotless clean.

During your stay you can use the kitchen to make your own dinner if you want and there is always cold drinking water available in de fridge. Every day Gundi would ask what time we wanted breakfast the next morning. She would come to the house and make it herself. The breakfast was excellent. She would make a hot dish (eggs, French toast etc.), fresh fruit juice and toast. There are also cereals, milk, yoghurt, cheese, fruit, marmalade and so on.

Gundi would try her best to make you feel at home. She was born on the Galapagos and used to be a guide so she can give you advice on tours, cruises, restaurants. Practically everything you could need while being there. Because we travelled the mainland first we came with two big suitcases. As we would return to the B&B after our cruise she offered to lend us a backpack so we wouldn’t have to take both suitcases on board, but pack just one. Which was great!

Gundi does not live on the property but nearby. There is a phone with her phone number so in case of emergency you can always give her a call.

We had a great time and loved our stay at Jean’s Home. We would recommend this B&B to anyone.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Jean's Home is a small B&B located on a point called "Punta Estrada", on Santa Cruz, Galapagos Islands -----Brief History----- The original house was built by Jean Blaha, an American settler who arrived on the islands in the 70's. She decided to build her home with her own hands, patiently moving lava-rock by lava-rock. In the 90's Jean passed away without completely finishing the construction. She left the house to her friend and current owner Gundi Schreyer, who decided to call it "Jean's Home" in memory and honor of Jean. -----Accommodations:----- The main house consists out of three rooms and a kitchen-living-room area. The kitchen is there for the guests to use and is fully equipped with refrigerator, electric stove, microwave, coffee-machine, pots and pans and everything needed. There is also a television in the living-room. There are three rooms connected directly to the main house. Each of the rooms has air-conditioning and a private bathroom with hot water. There are also two bungalows for up to three people, each with a private bathroom and a small kitchen (the bungalows do not have air-conditioning but several fans and big windows instead). The B&B is surrounded by a natural garden with mostly native and endemic plants. -----Location:----- Jean's Home is located on a point of the island at the end of "Academy Bay" and can be reached by water-taxi. These are available 24/7 and take only a few minutes to get to the point. The neighborhood is a very peaceful place, as there are no cars (only pedestrian pathways) and it is not located in the center of the town. There is a beautiful beach very close by and also a natural crack with cool brackish water where you can swim, only 15-20 minutes away from the B&B. We also have a few restaurants located directly on the point. ... more   less
