“Good place in a high priced area”
Reviewed 2 November 2012 via mobile

We checked in at this hotel after 'fleeing' from a 'red-ant-owned' room in another hotel. And we found what we needed, a clean room with a comfortable bed and a working shower. Wi-Fi works pretty good, too. In our room, there was no AC, but no problem as it gets cool at night anyway.

Coming from mainland Ecuador, the Galapagos seem pretty expensive. Taking this fact as given, I think Sir Francis Drake offers acceptable value for the price compared to some others in the area. We checked in a second time after visiting the other islands.

Stayed at this hotel for 5 days and used it as our "home base" while island jumping. The hotel is in a great spot, roughly 2 blocks from the main strip (Charles Darwin Blvd). Its right in the middle of action, though in fact, the city is so small, any hotel is pretty much in the middle of everything. The hotel was basic amenities, essentially like living in a Hostel but with a private room and bathroom. The hotel has good hot water and Free Wifi and for the most part, the WIFI was very fast ( we had one night where it went down, but assisting the night clerk resetting the router fixed it right up). We paid $20 a person per night so it was roughly $60 a night for 3 of us, so for the price, it wasn't bad. Since the water in the city is not potable, they did have a water purification station next to the lobby that you can fill up canteens. It offers hot and cold water and has a faucet for filling up larger bottles. The bathroom was decent and the shower was hot, though I would say that it could do with some upgrades (the bathroom door didn't shut well and the fridge was plugged into the bathroom socket so we had to unplug it to close the bathroom door), There was a TV in the room with cable as well as a ceiling fan and AC. All in all, everything was fine and we had no complaints. This is a basic hotel though, but in a great spot on a great street. Our room did not have a view, but we were on the second floor and there was a balcony down the hall that had a nice view. With the tightness of this hotel on the street, don't expect ocean views.

Giving this place a 4 because we had another hotel to compare it to on Puerto Auyora and both my husband and I decided that Sir Francis was actually very good for the price we payed. We were able to see several rooms when we arrived and it seems like the higher the floor, the better the rooms. First floor (or it was actually in the basement) was literally like a "dungeon"; second floor was a bit dated, but had AC and clean accommodations; third floor is where we stayed and liked the most - looked very updated with nice bathroom/showers, flat screen TV, but the downside is no AC. Not sure how hot it gets in Puerto Ayora in during the other time of the year, but AC was not needed for us and overhead fan was more than plenty. The third floor room was comparable to another B&B (Suites Del Sol - see my other review) we stayed on our trip, but for half the price! Sir Francis is very close to the main strip and very close tho Charles Binford street with all the cheap eateries. We would have stayed here the whole time had we known that 2nd/3rd floor rooms are much nicer than 1st floor (when we first arrived we only saw the room in the basement).

Reception is not too good with English, so speaking my broken Spanish worked wonders. I think there are several people working at the reception with varying levels of English, but I mainly kept getting the lady who spoke none of it. Breakfast is not included like some other places do, and it would have been nice to have, but again for the cheap price can't really complain.

We found this family run hotel after checking out from an overpriced dump. We visited about 10 other hotels priced between $25 - $125 for a double room per night, before we checked in here.

The Hotel Sir Francis Drake is not perfect, it is however good enough, that we returned here after a visit to Isabella Island.

Its located pretty close to the wharf where most taxi boats leave from, and it is kept clean and tidy. The family who run it are nice enough - although not English speakers - and its generally bright and airy.

There a few different room types - some with AC and some not, so check out your room first.... We had a small LCD TV (with a bad connection), AC, double bed and were pleasantly happy here.

The showers are hot, and bathrooms clean. The Hotel Sir Francis Drake isn't the best place here, but for $50 a night for a double (no breakfast) it was good enough!

Room Tip: Room 15 (at the rear of the building) has views to the "Lagoon" and towards the Port. It i...

Due to uncertain travel plans -- and the higher rates generally charged for pre-booked hotel reservations in the Galapagos -- I arrived in Puerto Ayora without a hotel reservation for my family of 5. Setting off from the main dock area, I tried to find a suitable hotel for the night. After a few unsuccessful tries (sold out, lousy or expensive hotels) I stumbled upon the Francis Drake. It has very good location (yes, they're currently re-doing the street in front, but that will be finished in a month or two) -- just a block from "ground zero" in Puerto Ayora (the area in front of the main dock) and across the street from the great "kioscos" where you can have inexpensive and tasty meals.

I was offered a room with 5 single beds for $75 (no tax). I unsuccessfully asked for a further discount. The room was fairly spartan (like no artwork on the walls; the 2-bed rooms seem a little fancier). But it had AC, good beds, TV and hot water, and was decent in size. The overall hotel is modern, at least by Ecuadorian standards. It was comfortable enough that, when we had another night in Puerto Ayora, we headed back to the Francis Drake.

Don't expect too much warmth (or English) from the front desk, but they were helpful when I had questions (like pointing me to a laundry a couple of blocks from the hotel).

Bottomline is that there's probably no reason to PREFER this hotel over others, but if you need a safe and convenient place to crash in Puerto Ayora at a reasonable price -- at what I would describe as "Rick Steves level" comfort -- the Francis Drake is a decent choice.

This hotel had both good & bad things, which made it just an average hotel, at least during our stay. First of all, there were roadworks in the main street, which made it very noise, & made walking up from the main square very unpleasant (dust, noise, stones everywhere...). This was a big problem, as it didn't allow us to relax as much as we would have expected. Our rrom was facing the main road & we asked to be transferred. Even if the hotel was nearly empty, we were asked to pay extra to have a room facing the back. The room was beautiful though, with a nice, comfy bed, air conditioning, modern bathroom... Breakfast wasn't included though & it had to be booked the night before if you wanted it (it wasn't spectacular). It was very difficult to find someone from the hotel, as most of the time there was no-one in reception. It is very well located to go to Tortuga Bay & quite close to restaurants. Maybe when the roadworks are finished it will be much better. It just need a bit more attention to it. Not a bad price, although there are a few nice hotels closer to the restaurants & bars with better value.

This was a great way to discover the Galapagos Islands and what it offers. The room I had was perfect, tv, a/c and a great view. The accommodations were excellent and was a perfect way to discover a different island or part of and island during the 6 days there. It was worth every dollar of the $4,500 i spent. A magical place that i am glad i visited.
