“Best birthday experience ever!”

“Best birthday experience ever!”
Reviewed 20 April 2014

My husband and I traveled to the Galapagos for my milestone birthday. Both of us were brand spanking new divers with a shiny new certification, and we were out for our first "real dives" outside of the certification. As our SSI training had just taught us, we had to be very cautious about who we dive with- we interviewed ALL the dive shops on the island before making the decision to dive with Macarron. We found him to be the most cautious and caring, listening to fears and concerns of the dive, and making sure we and our other divers were completely comfortable before we proceeded. He was also the ONLY dive master to tell us what dives were not safe for us as new divers and which he would not take us on. This ultimately made our decision as to which dive master to choose- the other shops never gave guidelines to our experience and which places they would take us- some offering for us to take our advanced course our first time out!
We were so happy we chose Macarron- we had a fabulous time! Safety checks, constant watching and checking in with us while under water, never swimming too fast we couldn't keep up. Within the first 5 minutes of our first dive we saw hammerheads, a school of over 50 eagle rays and later sea turtles and barracudas. We enjoyed ourselves so much we signed up for another day of diving! I would never hesitate to recommend Macarron as a dive master and instructor for a dive trip. As a former fisherman, he knows the waters, showed great respect to the wildlife and was 100% professional!

“Promises not kept!”
Reviewed 20 June 2013

A group of 9 of us wanted to go on a snorkeling expedition to Daphne Major, on the north end of Santa Cruz Island. We set up this adventure with Macarron. The night before, I received a call from them, stating they couldn't get a guide to take us to Daphne Major. Instead, we could go to Santa Fe for 3 hours the next afternoon. While disappointed, we said we would do Santa Fe instead. We left about 1/2 late from the dock. Once we got to Santa Fe, we discover the guide (or Dianna, the owner's wife) failed to supply us with fins for diving. We had mask and snorkel (most of us had our own), but it's tough to snorkel without fins. The guide (Abraham) just shrugged his shoulders as he put his fins on. We all went snorkeling. Our guide did very little, if anything, to show us the sea animals. He also was the first person back in the boat. We also were promised we would get out on the land because one of our party didn't snorkel. The captain wouldn't take us ashore. When we return to Puerto Ayora, we went to see Dianna about the lack of fins, asking for some bit of a refund because of their oversite. She told us to come back in 1 hour, after she had talked to the guide and captain. When we returned in 1 hour, she was nowhere to be seen but left someone there who knew nothing of our case. We returned later that evening (before the posted closing time) and the shop was closed. We returned on Sunday when it was supposed to be open. And it was closed. One last effort on our part before our plane left on Monday and we found her there. She started arguing with us, but did refund $5 of our $60 fee. I would not advise going with Macarron Scuba Diver Shop.

“Diving with personal attention”
Reviewed 28 March 2013

We dove with Macarron 5 years ago when he was getting started in his own dive shop. We loved his diving style then, and he is still just as good. Although we did not have Macarron on our dive, his diver, Abram, was excellent and super attentive. Seems there are alot of PADI courses being taught at his shop now. His gear and equipment was in excellent condition. Being outfitted the night before the dive helped make the next morning orderly. We enjoyed Macarron's friendly nature and especially the two dives at Seymour and Mosquera. He is located right across Charles Darwin Ave from the open fisherman market. Go next door to Chocolate for a really cold beer!

“Best Dive Company in the Galapagos”
Reviewed 23 March 2013

There is nobody better than Macarron in the Galapagos. They are located right across from the fish market in Puerto Aroya. I dove sites at North Seymour with Abran, divemaster, who was excellent. Plenty of hammerhead, galapagos and white tipped sharks and rays, both manta and stingrays. One thing that impressed me was that on the way to the first dive site we came across a Pacific Green turtle tangled in a fish net. Abran and the captain took the time to stop the boat, haul the turtle on board, cut away the net and send him back on his way. Add that to Abran's excellent knowledge, experience and the way he handled the dive and it was a great day.

“Shocking - avoid”
Reviewed 5 March 2013

I was walking on Charles Darwin avenue at 9:00pm and discovered that Macarron had a fur seal pup on the pavement in front of their shop, presumably to attract people. The animal was in very bad shape; not moving. I asked two people in the shop why the pup was there: one told me that the animal sleeps in the shop (weird) and the other said that it was ill, sort of laughing. This is animal cruelty, or at the very least gross negligence. How can a group of divers sit in front of an animal that is clearly unwell without doing anything about it (not even reporting the incident to the authorities, which is what I had to do)? Fur seal pups are rejected by their mother once they are touched by humans.

Although i did not use the diving services of this shop, i am an experienced diver. I would never use the services of this shop and would encourage my fellow divers not to use them. With such shocking ethics on their shop,I don't want to imagine how they behave under water.
