“Great way to see the Galapagos and sleep on land”
Reviewed 22 February 2013

Finch Bay gives those of us with seasickness a way to see Santa Cruz, and three additional islands, all while sleeping in very comfortable on-land rooms at night. Hotel itself is very pretty, on a fairly busy beach, and service/food was impeccable. Day trips with local guide were mostly excellent. We had a substitute guide one day and that was a problem as he was so busy snapping photos of women in bikinis that he was not watching snorkelers who could have gotten into a lot of difficulty negotiating currents/waves over sharp rocks. As price includes full board, and lots of expeditions (with full buffet lunches on those expeditions) -- the price is quite reasonable.

Room Tip: We had the ocean view room which was large and comfortable with, of course, a great view.

The pool and pool bar are the highlight of this hotel. They are beautiful, tranquil and close to nature. The food and service at this hotel is also excellent, staff were friendly and breakfast delicious. The only problem for us was the rooms, they are pretty basic - not as luxurious as I would expect for the price. The rooms are also close together and facing each other right on the main walkway. Therefore it did not have the privacy that we would have liked. They do have some ocean facing rooms - if you are there for a honeymoon or romantic getaway (as we were) then if you can pay extra for the ocean view rooms do it. Unfortunately they were booked out when we were there. I would consider other hotels next time. Be warned too the beach & pool can get VERY busy with young children.

Room Tip: take ones above the walkway or facing the ocean.

If the Galapagos Islands are a Natural Wonderland, considered by many (and me too) a true Paradise on earth; the Finch Bay Eco-Hotel is a Paradise within Paradise....!!! The location is stunning in itself, quietly tucked seaside, right by a small bay of calm waters and surrounded by natural gardens that privilege the native plants, flowers and natural elements. On a secluded pedestrian-only sector of Academy Bay on the southern tip of Santa Cruz Island, the Hotel is a mere five minutes boat ride (there is a permanent shuttle service plus public water-taxis); from the bustling and colorful town of Puerto Ayora with its bars, restaurants, handicraft shops and many more attractions. The sparkling turquoise swimming pool, just steps away from a semi-private golden sandy beach is the centerpiece around which a large deck and the Hotel's low-rise installations are discretely laid out. From the warm personalized welcome by Tito, the Hotel Manager, who greets you half-way down the sandy trail that leads to the main building, you realize this is not just one more Hotel. The rooms are extremely comfortable and well equipped, but they don't have TV (there is one screen on the Hotel's library and internet room). But, who needs TV in Galapagos anyway...?? The bathrooms are huge, impeccably clean and a haven of comfort. Since you step inside your room you realize there is a strong philosophy to preserve the environment and to help the preservation of nature... The Reception area displays some of the many international awards that the Hotel has received for its good practices and practical engagement with sustainability and responsible management. Each room has a small private porche with chairs and hammocks. Service and food are second to none in quality, innovation and cheerfulness. From top-notch Chef Byron to Reception, Bar and dining room staff, Carlos, Pepe, Cesar, Jorge, Grace, Manuel and the entire staff, there is nothing but smiles, cheerfulness and a respectful yet warmly friendly atmosphere. Food is delicious, whether the varied breakfast buffets, snacks, a la carte or buffet lunches and diners. Based on fresh and predominantly organic ingedients, the food combines local touches and ingredients, nicely fused with typical Ecuadorian cuisine and international food as well. Customers of the swimming pool, in addition to the human guests, frequently include some Galapagos "pin-tailed" ducks or lava gulls; while a large and beautiful great-blue heron, resident of the neighborhood stalks around the pool and seems to enjoy the sight of bathing tourists... Whether you eat al-fresco, around the pool or inside, you will inevitably have to share your breafast with dozens of the famous "Darwin's finches", who daringly hop all over your table, catching bread crumbs or other edible bits. the Hotel has two exclusive day-trip sleek yachts, capable of carrying some 16 passengers each, on delightful outings to nearby islands, following a varied itinerary, escorted by great quality licensed Naturalist Guides. Oswaldo, the Captain of the "Sea Finch" and his staff are equally welcoming, amicable and very professional. You can also take tours to numerous points within Santa Cruz Island: the Charles Darwin Research Station and its giant tortoises corrals, the highlands of Santa Cruz for more fauna and flora; try out a biking adventure or a kayak ride from the Hotel's beach are among the activities, ready for the asking. Having been to Galapagos many times, I found the Finch Bay Eco-Hotel, a true Paradise in Paradise, a place for relaxation and enjoyment, the perfect venue for a memorable visit to Galapagos...

Room Tip: The Ocean View rooms have balconies overlooking the sea and, in the distance, the island of Santa Fe...

and the included guide service was excellent with knowledgeable staff and lots of activity including hikes and snorkeling. The food preparation and service were flawless. The pool and bar area is attractive and comfortable.

Room Tip: choose a room away from the pool and don't forget your deet if you want to sit out after dark.

After some days in lazy calm Isabela we arrvied back to Puerto Ayora and its hectic boat taxi activity. The Finch Bay Hotel is also more frentic, upscale, big with a large professional structure, Well-trained employees, courtesy all-around, clean rooms, all that for expensive $720 / night (2+1).

The breakfast is very bug, those that inlcude a noontime meal in it (rice, beans, shrimp, beef, etc.). You can chiise swimming in the large pool, or just give 10 steps and you are in a local's popular beach, with warm water and som snorkeling potencial. If you lile mingling with locals that's the place to be.

I recommend this hotel if you are not on a budget and if you are not in the 24x7 adventure mode, hanging around there at the pool watching the time go by is not a bad option indeed,

My review is a little late. I stayed here Dec 10-19 of 2011. Turned out this was the PERFECT time to visit because it was soon after Thanksgiving, yet a little before the Christmas and New Years rush. The Hotel was maybe 50% full. Half the time the daily cruises had 3 guests on board. There were more workers than tourists!

The meals were excellent, like works of art.
The rooms and grounds are pristine. Clean, modern and quiet. They have their own water filtration system so there is no need to worry about the water quality.

Their naturalist and guides are excellent. Extremely knowledgeable and friendly. The tours are amazing. The Snorkeling is amazing.

What isn't amazing about this place? Nothing!

The only bad thing I can think of is by the end of my trip i was absolutely craving beef! I had to make a special trip into town to grab a hamburger at a bar. Which, by the way, was more like chopped steak formed into a patty. YUM!
