The hotel is very nice, but I need to factor in the price. I spent three days on San Cristobal with hot water, so out of desperation, I booked the one place I was sure would have it for my return to Puerto Ayora. I had a lovely view of the ocean, the breakfast was exceptional and my room was nice with a great balcony.

The downside? No TV, the room was simple and I didn't feel I got a lot for my money.

Room Tip: If you're going to do it, spend the extra money for an ocean-view room.

Dear Jeremy L,

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel.

We are glad to hear that your stay was enjoyable. At the moment we are renovating our ocean view tower changing our decor to better compliment the Galapagos atmosphere, they'll be completed November 1, 2013. On your next visit we look forward to inviting you to stay in our new rooms. Safe travels!

We stayed here for 3 days INSTEAD of a cruise and would recommend it to anyone. You will see almost as much wildlife as anyone on a cruise in five minutes at this hotel.

We had a seafront room and so could sit on the balcony and watch the it get light . We spent 3 hours over breakfast watching the sea lions and birds.Staff great:friendly and knowledgeable.

Maybe sea front rooms are expensive but compered with a cruise.......And a cruise may well make you sick.

Room Tip: Definitely sea view

Dear xyzGuildford,

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel.

We are so glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay. Choosing a land based vacation in Galapagos definitely has its benefits as cruise schedules can be quite strict and don't allow for a leisurely 3 hour breakfast. We strive to keep our staff informed and well educated so that they can provide the excellent service that you enjoyed.

Safe travels,

Centrally beachfront hotel in Puerto Ayora, friendly reception, small rooms with nice view,so heavily priced, acceptable breakfast and good cocktails with complicated happy hour rules, best inform before ordering.
Best about the hotel is the terrace with swimming pool with a fantastic seaview and fishmarket view, plus sealion on the terrace who occasionally takes a dip in the swimmingpool, sea iguanas, pelicans, blue footed boobies, so if there were a giant turtle on spot you would have all Galapagos in one place.
We appreciated our stay very much because of this terrace. We did not try the restaurant because many nice options around as well, just opposite the street Isla Gril for example.

Room Tip: Seaview is a must

Dear guzui,

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel!

Our front desk will be delighted to hear that you enjoyed the service that you recieved. Our rooms are not the largest, though, we offer larger rooms in our Isla Sol tower across the street, for those guests who need more space, though they do not offer the spectacular view that one can enjoy from our balconies. Thank you for your comment about the happy hour rules being confusing, we will print up Happy Hour menus so that everything is explained clearly, my apologies for the confusion.

Stayed here 3 nights after finishing a cruise of the islands.

The hotel straddles Darwin ave and is close to many good restaurants and cafes. We stayed in a room on the non-water front building, which was cheaper ($200 vs $300/night).

The room rate does not unfortunately reflect the quality of the hotel. I'm prepared to pay this rate in places like NYC, Paris, or a real beach resort. This hotel is none of the above, though most hotels in Puerto Ayora charge something similar.

The rooms are clean and spacious but feel empty without life. They feel like living in an office building or hospital. They don't have a television. The linen is 3 star quality. The safe didn't work. There was air conditioning.

The highlight for this hotel is its "waterfront" pool, jacuzzi and bar. There is a resident grey heron that perches by the pool and marine iguanas also like to bake in the sun there. After having a dip in the pool and jacuzzi we returned to our rooms. There were no towels and no hot water. When we called reception it turns out that they were performing plumbing maintenance.

Would definitely search elsewhere if coming back.

Dear travellingurolfellow,

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel.

Most hotels in our category offer similar pricing as having a business and providing services on an island comes at a cost, as compared to hotels in mainland Ecuador.

We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed our location, close to restaurants and overlooking Pelican Bay. As we have seen the need to revive the decor in our Isla Sol rooms we have recently installed television with cable. Many guests in the past have commented on this aspect of the rooms and we are delighted to be able to fulfill this request. As importations to Ecuador are restricted most hotels offer similar safes, which should be turned on using a button inside the door. As the safe is located in the closet the instructions for using it are located on the wall directly behind it.

Our ocean front patio is a special place filled with all sorts of Galapagos wildlife, we are delighted that you could enjoy it. My apologies for the lack of water in your room upon your return. The maintanence was only momentary and the water service was restored within the hour.

Safe travels,

Allison de Perez

Great location, walking distance to everything. The customer service was excellent and the staff was extremely helpful no matter the request. The buffet was good and offered a lot of variety. The bar/pool area looks out over the bay and is a nice place to hang out. Our room was in the tower across the street and was very basic. Clean but had no decor or rug/carpet so the room, floor and hallways produced a lot of echos. Room had a TV hook up but no TV. When the phone rang in the lobby you could hear it two floors up with the doors and windows closed. When other guests closed doors it sounded like slamming.

Room Tip: Ask whether they've finished the tower renovations or opt for the main building/ocean view rooms

We stayed here two nights as part of our REI Adventures tour. It is located right in the center of Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island, so we have great views of the inlet, easy walking to all the restaurants, shopping, and Charles Darwin Station. The pelicans sit right outside (and sometimes bathe in the swimming pool...) Lovely outdoor bar area, and an enclosed dining room for breakfasts and dinners. The food is quite nice, if not fancy or special. Ask for a Mojito at the bar, and the bartender will go pick the mint from their garden! Nice service; very kind and helpful. Large containers of water in the hallways so you can refill your water bottles with drinkable water. The blue glass in the windows adds a lovely tint to the view, even on cloudy mornings. Not luxurious, but clean, safe, nice,

Room Tip: Almost all rooms have an outdoor balcony, except 205.

Dear JC,

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel.

We are so pleased to hear that you enjoyed our prime location, nearby to shops and other restaurants. Our guests do enjoy visits from Lava gulls, Lava herons, Darwin finches, Brown Pelicans and Blue footed boobies, just to name a few. Our pool is cleaned every morning and ph checked to assure the cleanest water for our guests. The Pineapple mojito is my personal favorite, a creation by our head bartender, Jorge, many of our guests enjoy our Passionfruit mojito as well. Thank you for choosing Hotel Solymar!

Hotel Solymar promises much more than it can offer. Rates and stars do not relate to the actual status of the hotel. It urgently needs a renovation!

Rooms are furnished very rarely and without any atmosphere – reminding of a hospital room. The breakfast restaurant has the charm of a crowded waiting room at the railway station. A sea lion that sleeps every night on one of the sun chairs is for sure nice but cannot feint over the missing quality of the rooms and other facilities.

If the room rates were 50% less it would be a fair deal. As it presents itself today Solymar feels like a total rip-off.
