“Great Moderate Hotel (Hostel)”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 March 2013

Small hotels in Manta are generally called Hostels - don't be confused by what we used to use in Europe during our college days. Marina Real is a delight. Comfortable rooms that are clean and the very best part - Diego and his staff! So kind, helpful, accommodating and very kind with my VERY rough language skills. Breakfast in the morning is delicious. Fresh fruit, fresh juice, fresh rolls and coffee with milk. They will make you espresso for your warm milk, but you will also find the common Ecuadorian instant coffee

Some advise for visiting Manta - there is very little English spoken - bone up on your Spanish skills. Currency is in US Dollars. A taxi to the beach $1 - don't ask - just give them a dollar and say thank you. At night taxis will want to charge more. There are no meters in the cabs in Manta - in Quito there are and you make sure they turn the meter on for the trip. It is a short ride to Montechristi - the home of the real deal handmade Panama Hats. Great quality for great price.

My husband and I both highly recommend this hotel for your safe and pleasant stay in Mantta.

This review is long overdue but no less heartfelt. We stayed at Marina Real Hostal in September 2012 for four nights and loved it. Chelly and all of the staff were friendly and very helpful. We enjoyed our first two nights there and Chelly was kind enough to let us leave our large suitcases there while we made a three-day trip to the beaches north of Manta. Then we returned to Marina Real for two more nights.
Our room, the pool and garden, and the breakfasts included with the room were all great, and we couldn't have asked for better service.
Chelly went way out of her way to help us with bus arrangements to Bahia and suggestions for businesses around town, and if we ever return to Manta, we will be sure to stay at Marina Real Hostal again! - Betsy and Mark

Hostal Marina Real is a first rate place to stay in Manta. The rooms are clean, the entire facility is modern, you can park your car safely in the garage, the staff is very friendly and a delicious breakfast is served each morning by the pool. In this price range (moderate), I highly recommend this establishment. Most of all, the owner, Shelly (I don't think that is the spelling of her name) takes wonderful care of her guests. She speaks good English and is very concerned for the safety and comfort of those staying with her.

Room Tip: All the rooms are fine with good views.

We stayed at the Marina Real in DEC 2012. We made reservations through a back and forth email exchange as there was no web site available. This was only minor complication in arraning our stay.

Shelly runs a wondeful hotel/hostal which I highly recommend. The daily price, including tax, was $67. The room was always clean, had cable, and well appointed - not luxury - but better than average.

There was a daily breakfast which we both found good and tasty.

Location was key to our stay - and Marina Real is in a good location with several restaurants nearby walking distance and only about a 20-25 minute walk to the beach - or 2-3 minutes by taxi. We walked up from the beach and by the backstreets each day.

One issue - there was no hot water to our room for 2 of the 3 days. There were power outages in the area on the last night - which we thought may have been part of the problem. Shelly was honest and said it was not - but said there may have been an issue with the system which provided heat to the portion we were staying in. We did not contact her on this issue until check out and I'm sure she would have handled it immediately if we had told her sooner. AC is available, but we found we did not need it.

There seem to be some interesting properties worth considing so stay at while in Manta - so I can only say - add Marina Real to your list. It is very clean, well kept, the service is prompt and efficient - and I am sure you will like working with Shelly.

Room Tip: Contact them by email - it may take a bit of a search - but they respond promptly when contacted.

We stayed here because of Trip Advisor reviews. I agree. They need a website. Had helluva time making reservas. Finally phoned and was able to get reservations with my very marginal Spanish. Everything else over two weeks in Ecuador was reserved over the internet.

Had some difficulty finding because this place was not in our (new and expensive) GPS database. With their street address and a decent map, it's not that hard to find, however.

The first thing I noticed after check-in? A pubic hair on the bathroom floor! Let's face it. You can tell when it's not yours. I left it to see if my novia would notice it. Apparently she did not, as I never heard anything.
A nearby dog was barking almost constantly. We were concerned that it would keep us up all night. But then it stopped, along with some curious moaning sounds. The next morning we spoke of it and were concerned that the dog may have been poisoned. But a few minutes later it started barking again! This time, we were relieved to hear it.
Hot water in the shower was great and so was the pressure. Not so for the sink.

Breakfast was certainly acceptable but I doubt it's the "best in Manta", as another reviewer wrote. Coffee, orange juice, fruit bowl, croissants with butter and jam, scrambled eggs with bacon pieces.

More like a small hotel in appearance. Rooms have TV and phone. Three levels. No handrail on winding staircase. But basic like a hostal

Asked for ice. It took a long time and then there was just a little. It seems in all of Ecuador they're stingy on ice and napkins, of all things! We later "bought" a larger bucket at a nearby restaurant for 25 cents.

I'm in agreement with others in that service and friendliness were great. Off-street secure parking available and convenient to the rooms.

On checkout we were charged $50 that came to $61 with tax. For the life of me I don't remember being quoted a rate when I made the reservations. But that is so unlike me.
Manta prices may well be higher, but compared to other places we stayed, even on the coast, this seems a bit pricey. I hope to yet write reviews on Hostal Aqui in Manta ($40) and Hosteria Mandalal in Pto Lopez ($44), the latter being our favorite place to stay in all of Ecuador.

Hotel Marina Real is a truly hidden gem in Manta, Ecuador. Owners treat you
as friends, service is excellent/personalized, and they offer the best breakfast in town. You simply won't regret staying with them while visiting Ecuador. Love this place!

I highly recommend Marina Real for those looking for a clean room, comfortable bed, a healthy breakfast, good service, security, and few extras. The hosts are pleasant and friendly. We brought a group of 13, a mix of experienced travelers and first-timers, and there were lots of positive comments. No complaints! We'll definitely plan on doing it again in the future.
