“Great Value in Avalon”
Reviewed 8 July 2013

The Desert Sand is a great Value Motel in a great location on the Jersey shore. Located a block from the beach, and within easy walking distance of several bars with summer entertainment, we have found this motel to be all you need. For years we have rental weekly condo's to accommodate our kids and their friends, but now that it's just the two of us, a week a King room is more than comfortable. Excellent, friendly housekeeping staff, beach tags included and easy access to the inland highways for day trips make for a perfect week. I recommend taking the time to visit the Cape May Winery (Great Dry Reds, and nesting Eagles in the trees on the edge of the vineyard!), Cape May Brewing Company and the Tuckahoe Brewing Company. All three located within 25 minutes of the Desert Sands.

Room Tip: 2nd level near the East end of the property keeps you away from the pool traffic and closer to the 2...

Stayed 2 nights here last weekend because we were at the shore for a wedding. Location is a block from the beach and is an easy walk. Though if you plan to be in the downtown Stone Harbor area, it is a long walk from there, more of a drive. Plenty of free parking near the hotel. You can borrow the hotel's beach tags. Rooms were clean and adequate and had everything that was needed. For the price we paid this was definitely a good value and I would consider staying here again in the future.

The photos made this hotel out to be much nicer than in actuality. We were disappointed by the quality of room and cleanliness of bedding. When spending the rate per night, we expected much nicer. When using the microwave in addition to the television, the power blew and the breaker box had to be flipped. This was unexpected and annoying.

Desert_SandNJ, Manager at Desert Sand Resort, responded to this review, 13 July 2013
The motel appreciates your feedback and concerns. We apologize for any inconvenience or aggravation you may have experienced while staying at the Desert Sand.
In reference to the cleanliness of the bedding, or overall room cleanliness, we treat these matters very seriously and vigorously. If a guest has any question or concern regarding cleanliness or safety, in a guestroom or common area, the staff is advised to address them immediately. However, if a circumstance arises and a member of the staff is not informed or a guest waits till he or she checks out, the staff will have little or no chance to rectify the issue for the individual. Another imperative reason why guests need to inform staff promptly is some of the daily tasks and materials are handled by third parties, and if there happens to be an issue with the goods and services they provide management needs to know so the mater can dealt with properly.
The issue regarding the blown breaker is a matter the management is addressing. Please realize the building is nearly 45 years old, and the amount of power demanded per room, with cell phones, laptops/tablets and hair dryers, is greater than it was even 10 years ago. The management is, and has been, taking steps annually to reconfigure and upgrade the building infrastructure. Unfortunately, due to the expenses and logistics involved this is not something that can be done all at once.
Thank you,
Desert Sand Management

We go here every year .... and it seems to get better each time
Looks like the rooms were recently renovated ... at least ours was
Grounds are always clean with a great location to the ocean
The only objection that I have (and we said this to the front desk) .... Rather thanoffer gift cards or free breakfasts ..... just give us the option for a reduced rate
We tried using the $100 gift card in 3 places and they all denied us ... the only place that let us use it was Uri's .... which is a GREAT place to eat in Cape May

Room Tip: Any room that would fit your needs is perfect

We spend 2 nights at this property. I would not call it a resort but it was a clean, comfortable room. It was mid-May and the property was very clean and well maintained. There was a small refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker in the room. The bathroom is small but the room was fine for a couple for a weekend. The location is very convenient. We ate meals out and enjoyed being able to have coffee in our room in the morning. We would definite return.

Room Tip: We were on the first floor and it was fine, but during the busy summer weekend that location maybe n...

Spent three nights here in late September with some friends who have stayed here before. The location is fine, just a block to the ocean beach, a five minute drive to the attractive little town of Stone Harbor, and about 25 minutes to the quaint town of Cape May. The "resort", however, is really just a long, three story motel with rooms like a typical Holiday Inn. A small pool with some lounge chairs does not a resort make. That said, the room was spotlessly clean, service was excellent, and pricing was relatively low for this desirable location on the Jersey Shore.

The beach didn't impress me - as a life long Jersey resident I prefer the softer sand beaches further north, especially Long Beach Island and the Seaside Heights peninsula. If I return to this area I'll stay at a B&B in Cape May instead.
