We stayed at the Golden Inn on our wedding night as it is the only hotel in Avalon that had single night rooms on the Labor Day holiday weekend. Hotel was clean, but needs updated. We were given a gift certtificate as a wedding gift, and we decided to at at Luigi's, but unfortunately it closed on LD and this was the next night. So, we went to Seaglass instead. We arrived to a friendly bartender as we sat down to have a glass of wine before being seated. 1 glass turned into another, and halfway through it we decided to be seated (they only had like 6 tables occupied). Bartender takes our gift Cert, looks at it funny, and changes it to reflect the new balance, then says "hmmm, never seen one of thses before". So we walk over to the hostess who tells us, "oh, I'm sorry, we are closed" This is at 7:50 pm. So we turn around back to the bartended, who is appalled and orders her to seat us. She does, and the waitress swings by 2 mins later to take our drink order. We still had 1/2 glasses of wine, so we order the cheese plate as a starter. Lets jump ahead 40 minuntes...because that is the next time we see our server. And in that time the hostess seats 3 more tables...closed, eh? And in that 40 mins, she took dinner orders for 2 of the tables seated after us, but never came back to us. So, at this point, we are annoyed to say the least. We ordered another round of wine and just 2 appetizers (steamed clams and buffalo shrimp) becasue we were at our breaking point. They came out fairly quickly, she just dropped them on our table and ran off. The clams were decent, the shrimp was a total waste of money. 5 tiny shrimp, fried into oblivion, and no buffalo to them at all. This is when the server finally comes back to take our order, 1 hr after we were seated. So we just asked for the check because we were thoroughly annoyed. She brings the check and we hand her the gift certificate with ~$68 left on it, and she looks at it funny, just like the bartender did, and then walks off with it mumbling something about the manager. Then she comes back 5 min laster saying the manager has to process the transaction. All the while, we watch the manager walk over to the bartender, who shows her how to ring it up. The server fianlly returns the gift certificate to us and says "i dont know how much is left on this", so we had to do the math of the 2 transactions ourselves, and figure out that we have $17 and change left. We are normally good tippers, but we just left a $5 for the server and got the heck out of there. Go across the street to the Concord Cafe, or even the nicley remodeled Windrift
My family has owned a summer home in avalon for 30 years, and I always wondered why the Golden Inn didnt get the recognition like the adjacent Windrift and even the Concord. Our late neighbor was the night manager at the Golden Inn for 40 years, and even he told us to stay away from the food. Well, we found out the hard way. They can keep their $17 left on my gift certificate, because me and my new bride will never set foot inside the Golden Inn for food again
