Nothing too much trouble
Reviewed 9 Feb 2013
I was so comfortable and safe here at Sultan Bey, travelling alone and for the first time to Egypt. Ok, people say EG is a bubble, but even in Hurghada (alone) I was fine, everyone was courteous. At the hotel, everyone was charming and pleasant, and went beyond what I expected to be helpful and informative. Food was very good, waiters attentive, beautiful restaurant and pool etc. I didn't feel anyone was waiting for tips, and didn't experience any waiting for service.
Yes,the fittings are a little worn around the edges, but I found it added to the charm of the place. The beds are so comfortable, best sleep for ages, and no problems with bathroom, electricity etc.
I miss it all!

Flowery, rosy, green, a small hotel, well maintained, and clean, everything is within reach in the room and outside, almost no walking. Its location is excellent, it overlooks the lagoon and is at 3 min walk to AlGouna downtown. AlGouna is characterized by Nubian style, red, low floors buildings. Restaurants and cafes are everywhere at close walking, supermarkets provide reasonable fixed price food, drinks and commodities. Antiquities and local products are available but should be bargained firmly. The hotel offers a small heated swimming pool, food is excellent and diverse at dinner, and good but understandably unchanged at breakfast. Staff is helpful and smiling, but when it comes to room selection you get what you want with some insistence; the view may overlook the lagoon, the swimming pool, both, or be internal over the gardens. Rooms are strangely having too steps, tumbling is a high risk specially when waking up at night. A shuttle boat departs from the hotel to Zeytouna beach every 30 minutes in shuttle trips from 8:30 am to 5 pm. Night entertainment is limited at the hotel but easily available throughout AlGouna. All in all, friendly hotel in a warmly welcoming town. Cairo is boiling by political differences, AlGouna is quiet, peaceful, and safe.

Stayed here a few times now, pleasant hotel with lovely views especially depending on whether you get a lagoon view or a garden view. Staff are usually helpful and pleasant. Good breakfast. Very good location, close to everything, based in Downtown, has a shuttle boat to the hotel beach. This time, the hotel was full and the staff seemed a bit over stretched. There was not always hot water and we had to renegotiate for the room we wanted even though we had been very specific and it was promised. It is a hotel catering for tourists from abroad so don't expect to feel that you re in Egypt...but El Gouna is not really Egypt anyway!!

I agree with others that the hotel needs renovations. It's a cozy place with beautiful scenery, yet, the staff was a bit overwhelmed. It could be also noticed that they were stressed out which reflects on how they service people, but they still tried hard, especially at the restaurant.

Sad but true, the reception was not really friendly to Egyptian guests. Overall experience was OK but we could have felt more welcomed and see more smiley faces.

Room tip: The lake view is worth it!

be patient when you cone here. incredibly slow! many rooms were noisy and have no view at all.
esp. the staff around the pool was lazy and even harsh.
food was very good.
atmosphere is very artificial. the complex could be everywhere in the world, no egyptian influence. even prices are stated in euros. expensive.

Firstly this was purely a late minute booking for myself and a friend to go kitesurfing for a week on the Red Sea. So when compared to our normal camping trips on the Gower etc this was rather palaceus! A weeks 4* B+B for £100...can`t grumble.

So the Hotel was as expected, if you don`t mind the copious use of marble, absolutely everywhere and even a 4* shower sprayed the floor, hence the need for extra towels on the floor. However, we had two single beds, enough room for coffee table, settee, mini bar and a small (none flatscreen) TV. The staff were friendly, the manager directed us to the key guy at the local kite school, really no complaints

Breakfast, we were rather getting our monies worth, (bit of an irony compared with how little it cost!) But you know what I mean we usually spent over an hour there making it a sort 7-8 course affair. Nice seating arrangements inside and out, and not too crowded being off season

The area, the hotel had its own boat to shuttle residents to its own little island, which was where we hooked up with the local kite school and payed them a tokenry fee for launch/land and safety boat cover, (we took or own equipment) they were a good bunch of local guys really appreciative of any income at this time of the year I would imagine.

El Gouna - I would describe it as an Egyptian theme park in the desert on the coast. All very clean safe and tidy, but if you wanted to see the "real Egypt", then I guess you would want to go on a lot of excursions. But for us it was perfect. You can eat really cheap, it`s a bite like scam city with everything from Quicksilver T shirts to Rolex watches. They`ll tell you quite openly that all the T shirts are just printed out the back, I succumbed to a pair of Oakley's but drew the line at a Rolex!! The Oakley's my be convincing at a distance but a Rolex for £30 aint gonna anyone...

In summary, at present with the strength of the GBP against the Egyptian pound it was a good bargain and as I said at the opening I really can't fault it for what we wanted v what we paid. But the sad thing though...would I take my family there for our summer holidays? Definitely not we would allways opt for southern Europe, but for the specialist activities Egypt is great, the main sport is diving, by the way, but with kitesurfing the up and coming "new kid on the block" None the less will I go back? You bet yes at the right time and place.
