“An almost faultless resort.”
Reviewed 24 April 2014

This was our 4th visit to Egypt and as such I have come to expect a lower standard of 5* in the Middle East in general. However, the Movenpick in El Gouna is of the expected UK standard - and in some cases it is better!

We asked for an updated room and were located in cluster 7. This was a great location; right by the Lagoon pool. It was a short, pleasant stroll (5 mins) through beautifully manicured gardens to the main buffet for breakfast/dinner. The resort is quite sprawling, and we enjoyed walking and exploring the different locations, restaurants and sunsets from the bridge. We also took bikes (1 hour free) and rode about just outside the resort.

The food at the Movenpick was excellent. All the restaurants offered exceptionally high quality food and service. We did not take our children with us but will be returning next year with them (aged 7 & 9) confident that there is a wide variety of healthy food on offer for all.

The rooms and pools are spotless. The staff from maintenance to gardeners to bar staff (I would love to name them all) are polite, courteous and always have a genuine smile. I would like to thank the staff at The Lagoon pool for making our visit so special.

The downtown area and marina are good places to visit (take a Tok Tok at 50p each) with high quality food and drink and good prices. The shop owners do not hassle you and even on my own (whist the husband watched the football) I felt very safe wandering around.

There are options to take tours - although on this short holiday we decided not to. The 'beach' is not as glamorous as other resorts but the pools and atmosphere of the resort make up for this. The only complaint I had was regarding the evening entertainment on one night; involving a male singer who during the break put on rap music containing swearing - whilst children were about! The lady on guest relations smiled politely when told!

This was a lovely relaxing break, made perfect by Movenpick staff and high standards. This is probably the only resort I would love to return to. Perfect weather in a perfect relaxing setting.

Room Tip: Ask for an updated room. The Oasis pool attracts families.

We booked an Easter week break for 3 of us (son stayed home to revise) Flights from Thomas Cook were great, no problems.

Would Recommend Travel trend Egypt for transfers, he took us straight through visa and passport control and we were in the taxi in under 15 minutes from disembarking. It was a bit Bonkers there was only 1 passport man on for the whole flight to get through, but we were in the first 20 through so were ok (I know, I'm alright Jack!)

Easy check-in on arrival, a deluxe room near to reception. A lovely big airy spacious room - daughter's bed not made up, when tried it was broken so they had to bring another in.

Rooms have a massive bathroom. I just wish the wardrobes and drawers were in the room rather than the bathroom, since one cannot get in for clothes or to safe when ladies are in there getting ready!

We had room service on first night as we arrived late, excellent food, super friendly service.

General Positives

Lovely pool, great staff, room lovely and spacious, excellent maid service. Thai restaurant was exceptional, breakfast plentiful and high quality. Mahmoud our waiter for several days was excellent and made sure I always had plenty of coffee in the morning!

Manicured lawns and plants are beautiful, all communal areas are extremely well kept.

Tuk tuks to the marina cost buttons (£1.50) and taxis can also be ordered for a similar price.

The not so greats

The Wireless access is quite frustrating - as many others have said disappointing service in a 5* hotel - we got it free in a deluxe room, and it is fast enough BUT it can only be used by one person at a time!!! With 5 I-devices between us that was just a pain in the butt. There is also a 10 minute wait between active sessions. I've seen many people complain about this, it is time the management really did something about it.

Paving around the pool - the area around the pool has loose slabs, which is dangerous. One of my friends commented on a photo of me in the pool "you could go caving in those cracks!". They do need sorted, I watched a couple of children trip.

Room layout - wardrobes and safe are in the bathroom. With a party of me and two women (wife and daughter) that causes all sorts of issues with the bathroom being occupied for extended periods, simple solution, put the wardrobes in the main room area where the table and minibar are, and move the minibar under the TV.

Check for local holidays - the Easter weekend was heaving with locals spending the weekend away, with lots of loud music and fireworks in the early hours. Then come Monday, calmness was restored!

Downtown area restaurants - we ate at Puddleducks, Athena Taverna and Upstairs - would recommend all, in particular the Greek maze was delicious and great value.

Marina area - There are plenty of restaurants, but Fridays and Mondays are particularly busy so you might want to book in advance - Le Deauville was very nice, Seventh Star ok but not brilliant (and they don't have ANY spirits if you fancy an aperitif such as a G&T before dinner.....)

Overall we had an excellent week, will definitely visit El Gouna again and extremely likely the Movenpick hotel itself again.

Room Tip: Don't miss out on lunch or dinner at Il Limone restaurant

We were worried about staying here following some of the recent reviews by Thomson travellers. We had an excellent holiday. Lovely clean room. We were in cluster 1 that hasn't been upgraded (all Thomson travellers are allocated an economy room which has not been renovated unless they pay for an upgrade). We had direct sea views, a nice balcony & a HUGE bed.
We were all inclusive so only went to the buffet on the first night. If you stay 1/2 board you get the buffet every night, if you stay all inclusive you can eat in the al a carte restaurants which we did. The Thai & Mediterranean were both excellent with a great variety on the menu. The Mediterranean also did lunch. We booked but you didn't need to, there was always room. Breakfast was buffet which was excellent with everything from an omelette station to a full cooked breakfast (except bacon) or continental. There were sunbeds in all areas every day; by the pool & on the beach. There are two huge pools (oasis & lagoon) both offer a lunchtime menu which we thought were good. There is also a health spa & pool with a gym. For us the time of year was excellent weather wise (early April), nice temperatures during the day & cools right down in the evening. Staff were excellent, always friendly. Evening entertainment was typical, not something we were in to & preferred eating later and then going to the gallery bar. This is our second visit to El Gouna & first to this hotel. We would definitely return; it offered everything we needed. I can't write a review and not mention the Movenpick ice cream. The flavours are to die for & it's available from 10am-5pm & in the al a carte restaurants. My favourite was Swiss chocolate but found after a few days I had to limit myself otherwise I wouldn't fit in to my clothes!

Room Tip: I emailed the hotel prior to my visit & I think this helped with the allocation of the room. I a...

We stayed here in April 2014 and enjoyed our stay considerably. We are in the over55 age group. Our tariff was bed and breakfast and this turned out to be to our advantage as it gave us the chance to try both hotel food and local restaurants in el gouna . The hotel is on a large site with many varied facilities to suit most age groups. Divers and kite surfers would particularly enjoy the facilities. It is quite a walk around the site - we were in cluster7 the furthest from the breakfast facilities and reception- 10 mins steady walk.20 minutes to the italian restuarant ! However our room was of good quality with a great bed and spacious bathroom positioned very close to the lagoon pool which we enjoyed considerably. Service was excellent and we felt very valued. We used the spa which was of high standard. Breakfast was rather repetitive but enjoyable in terms of a continental style. The large dining area could be hectic and rather noisy at times. The shuttle bus to downtown el guana was excellent value at £2 per week!! We regularly used the lagoon bar for lunch . The menu was a little limited but was well cooked and perfectly acceptable in terms of price and quality. The grounds of the hotel were beautiful and very well kept. Entertainment in the evening was very limited and to be honest a little disappointing. There were a mixture of people from all over Europe and Egypt staying at the hotel. There are 3 pools each with their own character which helped us choose our favourite. To be honest the area is not full of excursion opportunities but if you are a diver kite surfer or just want to chill out the opportunities are here. The hotel is graded as 5* but we felt that grading linked to range of facility rather than luxury. The lack of a lounge away from reception and the lack of a comfortable bar were also a little disappointing and limiting - especially in the evening. We used room service and the food was great and very good value. We had brought Egyptian currency with us but in the hotel we put most things on account and it very accurate at the point of payment.
Overall a very enjoyable stay with temperates at 34 degrees - ideal weather in April and October/November we were given to understand!! We would return.

Very enjoyable, unfortunately brief (three night) stay. The hotel and staff met and exceeded every expectation. Although a large resort, there is plenty of room to find your own space for relaxation or otherwise. The main buffet restaurant was excellent with a vast array to choose from and the Thai restaurant was fantastic!! Excellent spot for all you kite surfers out there however windsurfing equipment was poor and the latter, we felt, a little overpriced. Please note that the watersports were run independently from the hotel. Easy (and cheap) to get into Downtown El Gouna and El Gouna Marina where there is a choice of restaurants, bars and shops.
