“So relaxing...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 October 2010

This was my first time in the Movenpick hotel. I'm totally satisfied with the resort. It's quiet and peacefull, have plenty of space. One can't feel crowded by any means.
I wasn't in the renovated room still it was very nice. Spacious with huge bathroom, 2 queen size beds. Plenty of accessories, too. It was amazing how clean the room was. Not a spot of dust.
Choice of food was excellent. Several choices of meat, various vegetables, gravies, fresh salad, tons of bread and bagels, sweets of all kinds, cookies, fruits..., well you got the picture. There were thematic evenings and I liked the Swiss evening with the specific dish called Zurich veal. Delicious! Special treat was restaurant il limone with their fantastic stuff(Mohamed, Ahmed and others). I was looking forward to every single breakfast just because of the atmosphere. Not to forget Mafuz, very nice guy from the towel station near the restaurant, too.
There are 3 large pools with a swim-in bar in each, and the small one hidden in the health club area. I'm not such a fan of pools, beach is more for me.
I went home relaxed and full of positive impressions.
It is amazing how such a huge complex can function without any problems.

We normally shy away from package/resort holidays, preferring to make our own itineraries. This holiday however was with the sole aim of relaxing and getting some rest. For this purpose, the Moevenpick was the perfect combination with an onsite Angsana spa (we spent a hedonistic amount of time there, going for several massages and treatments over the week!) and great beach or poolside areas to lay out and do not much. A nice touch for the beach areas is that each umbrella has a windbreak/privacy wall to them (see photos) so you really feel like you have that bit of beach to yourself - a detail, but makes a difference. It also has 4 pools in distinct areas so each day its possible to go to a different area to hang out. El Gouna is a purpose-built resort town thats basically in the middle of not much so it comes across a bit like an Egyptian Disneyland (wonderful, but not quite authentic) but the upside to this is that its very easy to holiday there; all the tourist support you'd think of - and very clean.

We chose the hotel because it had the combination of facilities we were looking for (sun, spa, sea, scuba - see note on the dive centre below however), not too far from the town centre. Its a 8-10 minute walk to downtown, or a quick ride in a Tuk-Tuk (motorbike taxi). There's also a regular shuttle. Compared to the other hotels in El Gouna, it seemed the best placed to downtown - the Steigenberger is too far to walk, as an example. This was important for us as we chose to go with just Bed & Breakfast and each night wandered over to the Downtown area for dinner. Several nights there were street festivals/singers/belly dancers, and every evening all the shops and bars are open; it made for a nice end to the day and gave us a wider choice for dinner.

The hotel restaurants are nice, food of good quality but it was a very "westernised" menu - pasta, pizza, etc. with only a few local dishes available. Also, the vegetarian selection was very minimal - it would have been a fairly boring selection had we gone all-inclusive; we had lunch at the hotel several times and charged directly to our room. We found a great (new) Egyptian restaurant called "Abou El Sid" after asking the bartender at one of the downtown bars (a recommended practice - he also pointed out the places where people had gotten sick after eating there, so we avoided!) Also a great (and cheap) Thai resturant called "The White Elephant" (also recommended to us), both with excellent food and a good vegetarian selection.

For scuba, there's an onsite dive centre at the hotel which we originally booked at but then cancelled and went diving for 2 days with a group called Dive Connection (www.diveconnection.com) which is about a 5 minute walk from the hotel, on the main road, halfway between the Moevenpick and Downtown. The onsite centre was very professional, etc, but came across as a bit "sterile" - as though we were just another set of tourists signing up for an add-on activity. Also they were going to charge 80 Euros for a refresher session as we hadn't dived in a year(!) The Dive Centre group were expotentially friendlier and welcoming while being equally as professional. They took us through the refresher activities for free as part of our first dive. All of the crew took the time to learn our names and say hello. Also, as the boats left from the same marina each day, we could see there were a lot more people on the boats from the hotel centre. I asked Niko, the owner of Dive Centre, who said that he restricted the numbers on his boats so it was never overcrowded - excellent lunch on board as well. The centre is run by an international group - Germans, Dutch and Egyptians mainly but all the staff spoke excellent English. For those considering learning diving, snorkelling or just sunning on the boat, they also take out snorkellers/non-divers as well - on our second day we got to snorkel with 5 wild dolphins who stopped by to play near the second mooring(!) Amazing experience!

The hotel staff were very friendly, but not overly familiar. The other guests were a mixture of Germans, English, Dutch, Saudis and Egyptians (at least, who we overheard at breakfast!) and the staff were both flexible and hospitable. Our room was a renovated upgrade (see photo) and cleaned to a high standard -biggest bathroom we've ever seen in a hotel room! There was a "towel heart" left for us the last night of our stay, which was a nice touch :)

The internet access is very expensive (50 Euros for a week, or 1 hour or 1 day passes) but the upside is you can use it anywhere in El Gouna, not just the hotel - handy if you want to surf on your iPhone at dinner in the downtown. Its provided by Mobilnet who service all of the town.

A long review, but for those looking to have a restful break in a resort hotel, go for the Moevenpick. It has everything you need, and is just a walk away from everything else.

Dear roving_jane
We were delighted that you had very much enjoyed your stay with us but would welcome any suggestions you may have on what you would like to see in the form of dishes for vegetarian guests. Please can you send these direct to resort.elgouna@moevenpick.com
Our menus in our 4 different restaurants are 'tailored' to meet the eating habits of our rather varied clientele and it is for this reason that we have a Seafood and Oriental Food Speciality Restaurant (El Sayadin) right on the beach at one end of the Resort - we are only sorry that you did not manage to visit it.
We have also noted your comments about the Dive Centre and have passed them onto the Management.
Thank you for your constructive comments as they will help us work on improving the standards and services that we offer to other guests and, in closing, we hope it will not be too long before we can welcome you back again.

our 4 time to this beautifull resort. verry friendly people, cleen, good food, quiet spa-pool or less quiet familypool. when somethings wrong, just call reception en they will do anything to fix it immediatly. beautifull views, safe enviroment in el gouna with their own down town en marina, just 35 min form hurhgada airport. snorkling in front of the resort, you can walk hondreds of meters in tot the sea, enkels deap. advise watershoes.
advise to book half pension because the price of all incl in exspensive. and not everything is included in all incl.

I was overall extremely satisfied for my first stay in this resort, even though I have a few critics - I choose the place because I am really picky about noise and no music is allowed apart from the main swimming pool –well, the kids corner located in the beach front plays awfully loud music - do children really need huge loudspeakers blasting music at 2 meters from their ears to enjoy themselves? and the activity leader having them shout as loud as possible?. I found this disrespectful for the guests trying to enjoy the quietness and serenity of the beach.
The main breakfast restaurant has no charm at all and no view, so I went to the Limone one: the terrace is charming (but could do without the music).
Beach Sun loungers: it's written everywhere that booking loungers on the beach is forbidden before 8:00 am so that everyone gets a chance to get one, which is fair. Only problem is that at 7:15 am, the beach staff themselves start putting towels on the loungers!!
I am a female solo traveler and I found some of the cleaning staff overly familiar. The staff at the reception is extremely efficient and polite.
I have dinner once at the Saladin : I found the food bland and beverages much too expensive : 40 € for a 37 cl bottle of red wine from Chili is ridiculous - I took a beer and ate in tow the following days. If you want a cheap, safe, tasty and Egyptian meal, in a friendly place, go to the FOOL restaurant – it’s about the only place in town not exclusively manufactured for tourist : lots of employees getting their take-away meal – there is a small terrace (no giant TV screen – what a relief !) and they got you a selection of mezze for about 3 euros).
My room in cluster 7 (not renovated) : aircon too noisy, but room is spacious, very clean, lots of light and lovely balcony; large, clean and nice bathroom too. In short, I love it.
I have no opinion about entertainment since this is not what I am looking for :the less, the better as far as I am concerned.
The shuttle bus to the airport is very efficient and well-priced (15 USD, for an approx. 40 minutes ride).
In short, I will recommend warmly this hotel ; grounds are beautiful, the beach front marvelous and all the space allows quietness (when the kids corners is not in action !) and serenity. I spend 3 days only, and left totally happy and relaxed..If you choose El Gouna as a destination, I think the Moevenpick is the best choice.

I LOVE Movenpick hotel. This was our second stay and it's the first time that we ever returned to a resort. Welcome fruit basket was a nice touch.

Room: we had one of the rooms which has not been refurbished yet, but I loved it anyway. It is spacious, very clean and light. Bed is VERY big and comfortable, big bathroom, coffee and tea making facilities and safe included. The room had a big balcony, we sat there each evening with some drinks and Egyptian sweets. Bliss.

Food: We were on BB which I recommend. Breakfast is amazing, huge variety and keeps you going till the evening. We had our dinners in Downtown area, very cheap and good food. Downtown is only about 15 min walk. Average cost in Downtown is around £10 pp with drinks but you can go more extravagant if you want. The 'All Inclusive' didn't appear to be such a good deal as there were limited menu and drink choices with the special cocktails and some a la carte dishes being excluded. Just the same, there was a good choice but I think one would end up paying the extra if the stay was a forthight.

Pool: there are 3 pool areas, all have a different atmosphere. You can choose whichever suits your mood. There is a swim up bar at all 3 pools. There were ALWAYS plenty of sunbeds, no need to reserve any in advance.

The resort is very big, probably that's what I really like about it, that it's spread out and feels very spacious and lazy. Even though there were many guests, it never feels crowded.

What makes it so special (and it's true about the whole El Gouna) is that the staff are very polite and helpful. They always smile and make an effort to please you and I never felt that anyone expected tips.

For the third time in two years we went to the Moevenpick El Gouna for two weeks in September and had, again, a totally relaxing and refreshing holiday. There's loads to do at the hotel and in El Gouna itself, if you want. Alternatively, it's also ideal for just relaxing in the permanent sunshine, like us, and reading, listening to music, and generally chilling out. The staff are friendly, concientious, and generally faultless. The beach, while not an expanse of pure white sand, is lovely and, as discovered this year, there's some great snorkelling to be had from the hotel.
The food is great, and breakfasts in Il Limone nice and plentiful, with lots of choice. The Thai restaurant and El Sayadin are well worth a visit, and there are great restaurants in the town and at the marina as well. Our only tiny gripe with the restaurants at the resort is that they ask for a very reasonable dress code of long trousers and covered shoes (perfectly fair by the way, as these are quality establishments, and easily done even in the hotter month of Spetember). However, it was a little galling to follow the code and then see that many people hadn't. When you're out for a nice meal it's a bit off putting to be surrounded by people who look like they've just come straight from the beach.
Apart from that though, I can't reccommend the place highly enough. We'll be back again in the future no doubt.
