Movenpick Resort & Spa El Gouna
Ranked #2 of 18 Hotels in El Gouna
Reviewed 11 January 2011

We stayed at the Movenpick for the week before Christmas. We found the hotel extremely comfortable and relaxing. I had contacted the hotel before we travelled (having read some of the reviews of the standard rooms) and was told that anyone travelling with a British travel agent would be placed in a standard room, but we could upgrade on arrival (at a cost) if we wished. I was therefore prepared for the worst when we got there and, yes, the room was a bit tired and worn, but it was a good size and clean and in a lovely position. We decided that the upgrade wasn't really necessary, even though I know the new rooms are very nice. There was still some renovation work going on but it was nowhere near us so certainly didn't bother us at all. Our position meant we had one of the longest walks to breakfast which we all loved (being taken to our room in a golf buggy when we arrived was great fun!) - it was good to work up an appetite! You certainly needed it for the vast choice of breakfast on offer - an excellent feature. We also ate in il limone which was fine, but we preferred El Sayadin with the moon rising over the sea. The hotel never felt crowded, even as we got close to Christmas and the staff throughout were excellent. It's a beautiful, relaxing place to stay and we would love to go back.

Dear travelbugs606699
We were delighted to read that you had very much enjoyed your stay with us and that you found everything to be of a very high standard. So far we have got 245 Leisure rooms completely renovated and this year we shall complete another 175 in various different phases, so as to keep the disruption to our guests to an absolute minimum. As you rightly say there is nothing intrinsically wrong with the existing standard Classic rooms other than the fact that they are beginning to look tired and it is for this reason that we are renovating them.
Once again thanks for your review and, in closing, we certainly hope that it will not be too long before we can welcome you back again.
Best wishes for a very happy, healthy and prosperous new year

After a very long journey (7hours of delay) and no luggage we arrived very tired at the movenpick. First of all we asked for a kit (toothbrush ect), we had to buy everything ... no help so far. We arrived in our room (cluster one) terrible ! I cannot desribe it but a very old room with a very bad bed and a bathroom ...we asked for renovated room (we had to pay 20euro more a night - not very correct) and the person at the desk said he didn't had any rooms left only next day, afterwards we met people who had a renovated room just afterwards they heard my conversation at the desk ...that's really not nice ! we had a very bad night. Next day changed room and received our luggage in the evening and our holliday could start.
We are used to travel a lot and I can tell that the location is superbe, the views on the lagoon, the food in buffet is very good and to go with children is perfect (everything is very clean). The animation could be better. Just take the renovated rooms from start.

Dear pv0
We were very pleased to read that you had very much enjoyed your stay with us, despite the difficulties you had on arrival for which we apologise. We do have toothbrush kits available for emergencies and regret that these were not given to you. It was, indeed, very unfortunate that we did not have any renovated Leisure rooms available on your first night as they were all pre-reserved in advance but were glad that we were able to move you the next day.
We have also noted that you felt the animation could have been better and would very much appreciate it if you can let us have your suggestions as this is something that we are constantly working on improving.
Our team of Chefs was delighted that you have very much enjoyed our food and they join us in hoping that it will not be too long before we can welcome you back to our Resort again.
Best wishes for a very happy, healthy and prosperous new year.

Having spent a reasonable week in Hurghada and on our way home, the engine on the Easyjet plane blew up and we had the pleasure of a nights stay at Movenpick in El Gouna.
My husband and are were departing Egypt NEVER to return after the visa fiasco when you arrive, general unpleasant food and hotel staff who only want to try to do a deal with you for everything and expect tipping for anything. El Gouna has to be an oasis in the dessert, its well maintained and a million miles away from the Beirut appearance of Hurghada. We had dinner, breakfast and lunch at this hotel and it was superb. The children who had hardly eaten all holiday feasted and I thought the standard was very good.
We were made to feel very welcome, and thoroughly enjoyed our 24 hours. I hope to return - perhaps this Christmas coming.

We were delighted that you had very much enjoyed your unexpected extra day in Egypt.
Flight delays are never enjoyable at the best of times but we were very pleased that you and your children had been able to enjoy our food and facilities and that, despite your original opinion of Egypt , you are now considering returning to our Resort next Christmas.
We shall be delighted to welcome you back and, once you have made your booking in the normal way, can you please contact our Guest Relations team and they will then do their utmost to ensure that you have another enjoyable stay with us.
Best wishes for a very happy, healthy and prosperous new year.

We have stayed a quite a few 4 & 5 star hotels over the years, as we were going away for Xmas we payed quite abit more than we normally would as this hotel is advertised as 5 star and after working hard all year fancied a bit of luxury. When we arrived we were asked if we wanted to pay more and upgrade our room? - My reply was 'We have paid a lot of money for this holiday, so I hope our room is of the best standard anyway, to which the reception person shrugged his shoulders. This obviously upset me and we were dissappointed with the room, although large & relatively clean, it was basic and very tired, this put a dampener on the whole holiday for me. The hotel itself was very nice, food was good and plenty choice. The beach was beautiful and very picturesque and in general we did have a good holiday. Beware the mosquito's though, usually they leave us alone, but not this time, and bar next door to the buffet restaurant is where most of them lurk and we got bit to death on the 1st night of our stay also they are in the bedrooms, take your plug in's.

Dear julesgillett

We were delighted that, in general, you and your family had a good holiday and that you had found the Resort very nice with a beautiful beach and that you had enjoyed the quality and variety of our food.

We were, however, very sorry to read that you were disappointed with the quality of our Classic rooms during your stay over Christmas. It is correct that some of the original Classic rooms are beginning to show their age and, in recognition of this, we have embarked on a complete renovation programme - so far we have completed 245 Leisure rooms with a further 175 being done during 2011 in various different phases so that there will be a minimum of disruption for our guests. We really regret that you felt that our Receptionist was too aggressive about offering you the option of having a Leisure room. We have found recently that quite a few guests are booking standard Classic rooms (which are at a discounted price, reflecting their age) but they are wanting renovated Leisure rooms and he was simply trying to anticipate the situation. He has, however, asked us to give you his sincere apologies, as it was never his intention to come across in an aggressive manner.

We have also noted your comments about the mosquitoes which do not normally appear at this time of year – it is a phenomenon that has hit the whole of the Hurghada coast this winter and we are doing our utmost to eradicate them by ‘fogging’ morning and evening as per the advice of experts who are studying this issue.

Once again thank you for having taken the time and trouble to share your impressions with us and, in closing, we sincerely hope that it will not be too long before we can welcome you back to our Resort again – should this be the case, please make your booking in the normal way and write direct to us at the Resort so that we can make sure you have a really enjoyable stay with us.

Best wishes for a very happy, healthy and prosperous new year to you and your family

To put some context on this review -we travelled with our 5 year old daughter for Christmas holidays, we are also fortunate enough to be well travelled and have stayed in some really excellent hotels over the years.
Whilst not specifically about the hotel you may find this helpful - we found Hurghada airport a bit chaotic and not as organised as it could be, there seemed to be excessive checks of passports for example. We obtained Visa's prior to our trip from the Consulate but these are not required you can buy them for less at the airport (£13 - after a bit of a wait!). Clearly rather than a means of checking who should be allowed into the country it is just a means to obtain hard currency for the Egyptian Government - but there you are...
(all they do is put a sticker into your passport allowing you entry!).
The toilets in the airport are not somewhere you would wish to spend anytime so make suitable arrangements prior to your visit!.
The hotel.
Generally very good with very friendly staff who love children. We paid the extra for an upgraded room which was very nice and recently decorated. The size was excellent and had all the mod cons. As has been mentioned internet was quite expensive so we just didn't use it - nice to get a break from emails etc anyway!.
We were on all inclusive and some of the wines were slightly on the 'rough' side but there should be something there to suit. The cocktails did the trick though...
The food was very good overall with one exception...
Firstly the Thai restaurant - Great tasting food but our starters took 45 mins to arrive and the main courses although quicker two of the dishes were cold (crispy chicken with cashews and the Pad Thai). To be honest we were so hungry by now we ate most of it anyway so I didn't ask for it to be taken off the bill - I normally would have. I did mention this at the time and we were given a comment card to fill in which I did. Nothing much else though...
Our daughter loved the kids club and they seemed to have a number of different activities, Thank you to the two main carers in there - you really improved our holiday. One thing I would say about the kids club. The hotel has a policy for beach towels in that you are allocated credit type cards to access towels and if you don't return them at the end of your stay you are fined 75 Egyptian pounds. There is no facility to sign your children in and out of the kids club! We have used kids club all over the world and systems have ranged for the high tech with photos taken of you and your children checked against the hotel register, to passwords and simple signing in and out registers.
It seems odd to have no system at all especially when there is one for towels! Anyway point made...
Thanks to Mohammed (manager) in the Palavirion restaurant and also Michel in the Lagoon restaurant (we are both managers of staff and we could see you both really driving your team to perform so well done)
Overall a very laid back and relaxing hotel with very good facilities, is it as good as a similar hotel in Dubai say - no - but you are not paying Dubai prices. I would definately recommend to our friends and can't say fairer than that.

Dear roystammers

We were very pleased to read that you had enjoyed your stay with us and will pass on your comments to the Hurghada Airport Authorities as we are in regular contact with them to try and improve things – your comments are very useful and strengthen our arguments.

We very much regret the problems that you encountered at dinner at the Bua Khao restaurant and apologise that nobody came back to you the next day, after you had filled in a questionnaire. We have also noted your comments about the registration system at the Kids Club and you have given us some very good ‘food for thought’ which we will use to see how we can improve things.

We have already passed on your thanks to Tone and Alin at the Kids Club and to Michel (Lagoon) and Mohammed (Palavrion) – they are all very valuable members of our team and they have asked us to thank you for your thanks.

Once again thank you very much for sharing your impressions with us and, in closing, we send you best wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous new year and do hope it will not be too long before we can welcome you back to our Resort again.

The best thing about this hotel is what not is there: There is no background muzak and no loud animation. Wonderful. Everything is well kept, clean, food and drinks served with a smile and when you ask for "could I please get som extra tomatoes" you get it at a separate plate, and plenty of it. Beach and pool area spotless, and the Christmas Dinner we had in the El Sayadin Beach Restaurant was just great. Quiet, peaceful hotel within walking distance of downtown El Gouna. Great value - and if you play tennis, sign up for the 7-hour Membership Programme. Reasonably priced, and the courts are perfectly maintained. See you again soon!

We're very regular travellers, and I must honestly say that, most of the time, we visit high level 5* hotels and resorts, so we're quite spoiled ;-)
The decisional factor to choose this hotel, was the 4,5/5 on tripadvisor, and we don't regret it at all !!!

POSITIVE THINGS:
+ Food: quality and diversity are excellent
+ Wine: when you're a Bourgogne-lover: try the Egyptian wine 'Beausoleil 2007'...
+ Service allover is great
+ Location: Superb in 2 ways:
1.: Perfect panoramic views: on some spots walking around the area, you even have 270° sea/lagoonview
2.: Nearby the Marina (--> visit Moods and Papa's Island) and Downtown
+ Space: Both in-room as the resort itself is very spacious, you never get the impression that it's crowdy
+ Sunbeds: it's not allowed to 'reserve' sunbeds by laying down towels: PERFECT!!! (there's no need to either, there's enough space for everyone!)

MINOR THINGS:
+ Renovation: it can get a bit noisy from 7.00 in the morning when your room is nearby the working area, BUT: when it bothers you: Talk to the PR or the management, and they'll try to solve the problem immediately!

At last, I would like to say special thanks to:
+ The whole IL LIMONE-crew, and in particular Assem, Nageh and Emad from the Il Limone restaurant for the great service
+ Mohamed Solimon, who kept our room impeccably clean, always present with a friendly smile, a friendly 'hello, how are you today?", and every now and then a special attention on the room, such as a swan made by a towel etc. etc.
+ The whole EMPEROR DIVERS-crew, and in particular Ahmed and Mahmoud, who made our Red Sea diving experience filled with good atmosphere, perfect briefings etc. etc.
+ Mr. Loic Lesteven, who solved a (small) problem very professionaly

Dear Myriam-Belgium

We were delighted to read that you had very much enjoyed your stay with us and that we had lived upto your expectations.

A copy of your review (and an arabic translation) has been posted on our Notice Boards so that all our team members can read it and copies have been given to Assem, Nageh and Emad from the Il Limone, Mohamed Solimon (your Room Cleaner), the EMPEROR DIVERS-crew as well as Loic Lesteven. They are all valuable members of our team and they have asked us to thank you for your kind words.

The room renovation programme is now moving to the Clusters furthest away from the Centre so any disturbance is likely to be minimal but if it bothers anyone we shall be happy to arrange for a room change.

Once again thank you and, in closing, all our team join us in hoping that you will have a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year and that it will not be too long before we can welcome you back again.
