“Good value for the money”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 February 2010

We had a great week at the Old Palace. Very clean, the cleaning staff was working 24 hours a day (like most of the other staff too....). The food was ok when we got used to it, and knew were everything was.. The only thing we wasn`t satisfied with was the all inclusive alcohol. All the spirits tasted like it was homemade. The beer was good, but the glasses sooo small. You needed 4 glasses to get a pint I think... The pools and the beach was lovely! All in all a great place to stay!

just got back from a 2 week holiday had a great ime.the location is perfect for a chill out break yes it is isolated nothing within walking distance. the pool is great and never to busy, the beach is a stones throw away with a few small reefs but plenty of fish. we walked 100 m to the left of the hotel by a jetty and had the beach to ourselfselfs.
rooms large and clean, staff try there best but a few EGP pounds helps you for better service.
ok food not great if you are english but you won,t starve hotel caters for the majority which are russian who are great to watch.
please just go and enjoy we will be looking to go again.
in 4 or 5 years this will be the place to go in egypt.

We were a group of 6 and we all agreed that we would go back to this hotel. The food was typical of the hotels that we have stayed in in Egypt (4 hotels, 8 holidays). Not one person in the group suffered with any tummy upsets - in fact the food at the airport leaves much to be desired!

The staff at the hotel were very good - saved us a table each night and made sure we had drinks at all times (without any pre tipping!).

the rooms were cleaned every day and I would not hold it against the hotel because they did not replace shampoo etc - I always take my own anyway. There were two bars open all day and we did not have any problems getting served.

The beach area was kept beautifully clean and there is an abundance of beds and umbrellas. The promenade will be really good when completed (just don't ask when that will be!)

It was the Russians who annoyed us more - they treat the locals very badly.

All in all our 2 week holiday was a relaxing break and we hhope to go back next year.

just came back from a 2 week vacation in the old palace, thoroughly enjoyed the experience the hotel is stunning the staff were very friendly and helpfull the beaches are unspoilt and clean the water is to die for plenty of snorkelling in the bay lovely area to
have plenty of walks the hotel is well equipped with a gym for the fitness freaks the pool is huge and well maintained .
you had fresh towels everyday and bed linen and you could have as many beach towels as you wanted the food was very good you had a choice everyday of beef chicken or fish and an abundance of other foods verying from pasta dishes the sweet counter was to
die for some people complained but they have to realise they are just not catering for the brits who always have something to mourn about .
the only thing that was missing was a bit of entertainment but after talking to other people who stayed at other resorts and it seems that everywhere was the same i have
no complaints about the old palace myself and my husband had a well chilled holiday and enjoyed every minute of it well done old palace you wont get a better deal 1,100 pound for 2 pepole for 14 days i thought it was well worth the money

OK, so I’ve read the reviews, scratched my head and all that excitement that I had having booked the Old Palace Resort had slightly evaporated – would it really be that bad?
Now let’s get things into perspective immediately: this is a five star hotel with a three star price tag. So that old adage you get what you pay for must be relevant, and it is. But that’s why we went - it cost two of us just over a thousand for two weeks, if I wanted to be assured something spectacular I would have had to double that price.
So wanting a bargain, and wanting something without mildew on the walls, we booked the Old Palace. And it wasn’t that bad – honestly. It is a good looking hotel; the rooms are just what you’d expect – better than a Travel Lodge not as grand as the Ritz. So that’s a tick for the decor.
The beach is lovely with plenty of sunbeds, sea absolutely wonderful, the pool clean and surrounding area tidy. Another tick.
The restaurant is perhaps a little sterile – just functional. And there isn’t a snacky restaurant for lunch which was a pity. There is a pool bar but no food, just drinks and little snacks like pastries. So all meals are served in the main restaurant. Now, I’ve read about the food but it isn’t that bad, no way! I actually thought it was fine, the choice was good, there were normally two chefs cooking from their stations – and a barbeque outside sometimes. One chef was always serving pasta which was lukewarm, but hey ho, it was edible. Breakfasts were good, the chef cooking omelettes or fried eggs but I was always eating toast so I can vouch for the freshness of the bread! And they also serve a range of traditional Egyptian food – I enjoyed their puds!
A massive tick goes to the staff – absolutely fab! Well mannered, courteous, friendly and polite. OK, a few surly faces behind the bar, but in the restaurant they couldn’t have worked harder for us. And, from talking to one on our last day – Metaz – he said the food was about to change for the better as he was given more control, so fingers crossed.
I think up to this point I’d rate the Old Palace a four star with a must try harder tag. But, as always, there is a but... YOU HAVE TO ASK FOR THINGS. Even shampoo, coffee (there’s a kettle in the room), cups, tissues, so the housekeeping gets a massive cross and I have a feeling management say, ‘Don’t bother restocking the rooms it saves us money!’ Who knows, but this really got my goat and caused us to complain to the management, and things did get better after that...well, for a while.
So for us money conscious bargain hunters it’s a good deal and a fair price for a very fair hotel. For those wanting pure luxury you’ll have to pay top price.
So sit back and relax and don’t worry, you won’t be ultra happy but you’ll be fine.
Oh it is very remote but then Hurghada is a dump so it’s not all bad!

Like all other reviews on here they are true, the hotel is beautiful you walk in and think hey ive landed a great holiday here. The rooms are big and clean the pool is great the beach is clean and nice. However if you want to lose weight this is the holiday for you.

My partner and I went for one week in sept, our idea was chill for one week drink, eat and realx were both self employed and this was a holiday to relax. However this was not soo much the case.
We are people that never complain when we go away we want to enjoy the sunshine and local food, we dont go away to eat english food otherwise we would stay at home if we were like that however on this ocassion this was the 1st holiday that we lived on chips awful :( .

All I can say is the food is the same day in day out liver, chicken, beef arranged in slightly differnent sauces lol. We ate out a few time in Hurguray which was lovely and we ate at the italian just one minute walk from the beach the food was lovely there what you would expect for going away. Shame the management never ate here.......

There is only on resturant which we liked to call the canteen, the pool has no grill just spam rolls yep you heard it spam rolls. That were left out in the sun. The glasses arent washed properly as a few times my beer taste of ouzo ? not good.

There were lots of people complaining and we were one of them but they didnt seem to understand what was wrong with spam and Liver???? 5* need i say more.

Hotel is 5* but the food i wouldnt feed to a dog.

Get the food sorted and it will be an amazing place to stay.

Please dont book here unless you like spam oh and a dodgy tummy :) and want to come backing having lost some weight

Lets get one thing straight before I start this is not a 5 star resort it is 3 star. I have been fortunate enough to stay in 5 & 4 star resorts/hotels in the past all over the globe & this is nowhere near them.

You find my pros & cons below.

Pros

Fantastic building & design
Fantastic pool
Fantastic Views
Very clean
Decent size rooms

Cons

Tables not set in the main dinning area

No cups out for coffee in the morning

Reception staff not interested

By far the major problem with this place is the food. They think fly's in rice, tasteless deserts, school canteen like room & main dishes we would not dream of serving the dog is acceptable. This was possibly the worst place I have ever had to eat. We choose an all inclusive resort to not have worry about what to do at night & what to spend but between the canteen slop & the 20ft bar to serve 600 guests toxic local spirits & warm lager out of a can we where forced to go out. Going out had 2 options the amazing Italian next to the resort or a taxi ride to hurgharda, both had great things to offer. The Italian for amazing food, good wine & a nice relaxing atmosphere or the busy streets of hurgharda, which offered many bars & restaurants.

We had a meeting with the catering manager on the second night & in his defense it slowly improved night by night, if they carried on improving at this rate it will be edible next September.

Outside they have the 'sea-breeze bar & grill' There is no grill! The snack options at midday where.....SPAM ROLLS! By this time we could do nothing but laugh & head for the Italian for a nice lunch.

If this place gets it act together on the following

Food
Drink
Service

I’m sure it could be a very popular resort that has returning guest every year, until then they just send home malnourished disgruntled holiday maker
