Sahl Hasheesh is an amazing resort. It is new and currently rather unpopulated so great if you want to get away from the crowds -- although avoid all-inclusive resorts like the Pyramisa which are full of Russian holiday makers.
Sunset Pearl apartments, however, were disappointing. It is a beautiful complex but the management is very poor. We stayed there for 6 nights in December and had the following issues:
(i) Firstly, we booked our holiday as self catering. Our room had a decent kitchen but had absolutely no kitchen equipment at all. We enquired at reception and they tried to charge us an arm and a leg to go all-inclusive. We didn't want to do this so they agreed to give us kitchen equipment -- but we had to pay a deposit of £150GBP! And all we got was 2 pans, 2 plates, 2 dishes, and some cutlery. So we were very limited in terms of cooking. In addition, since Sahl Hasheesh is mainly all-inclusive resorts, it is very limited in terms of supermarkets. There are a couple of very small markets but you can't buy much beyond milk/eggs/pasta. We wanted self catering because of the opportunity to shop in local markets and cook produce from there. This clearly wasn't possible in Sahl Hasheesh. There is a supermarket at Senzo Mall but this is a $15 taxi ride away.
(ii) We were constantly given a hard time by security at both Sunset Pearl and the sister hotel Pyramisa (which we were allowed to use). Since we weren't all inclusive, we didn't have wristbands so were constantly stopped and asked what we were doing. Worse, one morning we left for a day trip to Luxor at 5am. We walked out of Sunset Pearl to get to our tour operator's offices, and security held us up for 10 minutes asking why we were leaving and why we were taking our luggage (we only had backpacks). They seemed to be implying we were trying to "escape", which was odd as we had prepaid for everything.
(iii) On the 4th day of our trip, reception called and said "You will move hotels today". No explanation, no nothing. I was astonished. They wanted us to move to their sister hotel, the Pyramisa which is all-inclusive for Russian holidaymakers. We would have been very much out of place there as Brits as the staff there mainly speak Russian and everything is geared up towards Russians. We managed to speak to the manager who let us stay -- he explained that essentially the management company was withdrawing from the complex. There was no word on who, if anyone, was going to take it over.
Sunset Pearl could be a really good place to stay if they equipped the kitchens and if there were better supermarkets. Restaurant options at Sahl Hasheesh are limited -- there is a very good Italian (Il Gusto) and a decent Pizzeria. Other than that, lots of all-inclusive hotels, which you can't really use because they are not set up for taking cash payments for outside guests.
Don't get me wrong -- we had a great holiday in Sahl Hasheesh, but it was despite Sunset Pearl rather than because of it.
