“Sahl Hasheesh fantastic, but don't stay here”
Reviewed 9 January 2013

Sahl Hasheesh is an amazing resort. It is new and currently rather unpopulated so great if you want to get away from the crowds -- although avoid all-inclusive resorts like the Pyramisa which are full of Russian holiday makers.

Sunset Pearl apartments, however, were disappointing. It is a beautiful complex but the management is very poor. We stayed there for 6 nights in December and had the following issues:

(i) Firstly, we booked our holiday as self catering. Our room had a decent kitchen but had absolutely no kitchen equipment at all. We enquired at reception and they tried to charge us an arm and a leg to go all-inclusive. We didn't want to do this so they agreed to give us kitchen equipment -- but we had to pay a deposit of £150GBP! And all we got was 2 pans, 2 plates, 2 dishes, and some cutlery. So we were very limited in terms of cooking. In addition, since Sahl Hasheesh is mainly all-inclusive resorts, it is very limited in terms of supermarkets. There are a couple of very small markets but you can't buy much beyond milk/eggs/pasta. We wanted self catering because of the opportunity to shop in local markets and cook produce from there. This clearly wasn't possible in Sahl Hasheesh. There is a supermarket at Senzo Mall but this is a $15 taxi ride away.

(ii) We were constantly given a hard time by security at both Sunset Pearl and the sister hotel Pyramisa (which we were allowed to use). Since we weren't all inclusive, we didn't have wristbands so were constantly stopped and asked what we were doing. Worse, one morning we left for a day trip to Luxor at 5am. We walked out of Sunset Pearl to get to our tour operator's offices, and security held us up for 10 minutes asking why we were leaving and why we were taking our luggage (we only had backpacks). They seemed to be implying we were trying to "escape", which was odd as we had prepaid for everything.

(iii) On the 4th day of our trip, reception called and said "You will move hotels today". No explanation, no nothing. I was astonished. They wanted us to move to their sister hotel, the Pyramisa which is all-inclusive for Russian holidaymakers. We would have been very much out of place there as Brits as the staff there mainly speak Russian and everything is geared up towards Russians. We managed to speak to the manager who let us stay -- he explained that essentially the management company was withdrawing from the complex. There was no word on who, if anyone, was going to take it over.

Sunset Pearl could be a really good place to stay if they equipped the kitchens and if there were better supermarkets. Restaurant options at Sahl Hasheesh are limited -- there is a very good Italian (Il Gusto) and a decent Pizzeria. Other than that, lots of all-inclusive hotels, which you can't really use because they are not set up for taking cash payments for outside guests.

Don't get me wrong -- we had a great holiday in Sahl Hasheesh, but it was despite Sunset Pearl rather than because of it.

Thanks for taking the time to write a review, we appreciate it.

I would like to make it clear that had you booked direct through Well Placed Apartments (Sunset Pearl Apartments sales channel) or one of the reputable online travel agents then these unfortunate incidents would not have occurred.

The reason for this is that there are 2 aspects to Sunset Pearl Apartments:

1) Privately owned apartments by individuals which are marketed and managed by Well Placed Apartments
2) Sunset Pearl ApartHotel which has been managed by Dessole a Russian company

I think you must have booked through Dessole or one of their agents which is why you were given a substandard apartment and encountered the problems you did.

As can be seen from previous reviews when an apartment has been booked via other channels the standard is superior to what you received. I would therefore urge any future guests to make sure they are booking through these channels.

I can totally sympathize with all your comments made as they are valid and constructive. Sahl Hasheesh is still developing as a resort and each week something new opens up to add to the guest experience, for example there is new a dive school under the pier just opened which is being run by Aquarius.

I also understand that Pyramisa have recently taken the management of the Aparthotel back from Dessole and therefore that will be operated by Egyptians and Europeans and will alleviate a lot of the issues you faced on your holiday.

We are committed to giving a high level of customer service and providing quality, affordable apartments and I am sure you will find this to be the case if you book direct through us or the online travel agents for your future visits to Egypt. The apartments we manage at Sunset Pearl are fully equipped for self catering, offer high levels of comfort and are serviced by Egyptian and European staff who give high levels of customer service as can be seen from previous reviews.

Thanks again for your review and hope to see you back in Sahl Hasheesh soon.

We stayed here in October 2011 for 5 nights. The airconditioning in the apartment was very effective and that is a must in Egypt. The bedrooms were large and well equipped and the bathrooms were OK. We stayed here because we were doing a diving course close by and wanted to have something self catering. The kitchen area was large but was quite poorly equipped. I would say that it was not kitted out to be used by anyone that wanted to do any cooking. It was also pretty grimy. The worst thing was that there were no decent shops close by to get anything appropriate so you had to take a cab to get any supplies. A supermarket in the complex is opening soon (apparently) and that should change things. We found only one restaurant in decent walking distance (20 mins) from the apratment. The Sunset complex is quite nice though. But is was very quiet with hardly any other guests that we noticed.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your recent stay at Sunset Pearl, we appreciate your comments.

I am pleased to hear that you felt the apartment was spacious and well equipped and that overall your stay was a good one. The apartments are very close to the diving areas and as such are a good base for this.

I am sorry that you felt that the kitchen was not well enough equipped and we will certainly review this and the cleaning of the kitchens as this is not acceptable if you found it grimy and is not up to the normal very high standards of cleanliness on resort.

Sahl Hasheesh is a brand new resort and I appreciate your coments about the supermarkets etc not being close by. We understand that larger food supplies shops will be opening shortly in the resort however this is out of our control and we always advise to make a stop at the Senso Mall to stock up. Currently there are 4 restaurants in the resort outside of the hotels and they are all walking distance from Sunset Pearl. More restaurants will open shortly we understand.

The whole area is quiet at the moment due to the unrest in Egypt generally and that Sahl Hasheesh is a brand new resort. The resort is very high quality though and we are getting a lot of repeat bookings now because of this.

Thanks again for writing a review and we are pleased that overall you enjoyed your stay with us and we hope to welcome back again in the future.

We stayed at Sunset Pearl apartements in October 2010, and it was beautifull.
The apartment was very clean and nicely decorated.
The pool area was gorgeous and very peacefull.
Staff were friendly and helpfull.
Hurghada marina is a taxi ride away and well worth going into as there are lots of good restaurants and bars.
We had a brilliant holiday I would definately go back here!

I feel compelled to write a review of this place, which I never do, after reading some negative comments. We've just returned from a fab holiday and would genuinely recommend to anyone thinking of going. The service was first class, with staff eager to please. The pool is lovely and with the weather so perfect while we were there, we enjoyed everyday by the pool, in the sun. We're looking to return next year with the rest of our family.

Just returned from my second trip of the year to this complex. I first came here in Jan of this year, and had a fantastic time. We have just returned, and as previous, had a fantastic time here. It is everything you need for the perfect relaxing break. If you need the night life, there is more than enough bars and restaurants, just a taxi drive away, at Hurghada Marina, and Sekalla. But it is always nice to return back to the relaxing atmosphere of Sunset Pearl. As previous, all the staff were very helpful, and very polite. The resort is imacculate, as you would expect it to be. Our apartment, had everything you could wish for, and was of the highest standard.
Thank you once again for a fantastic Holiday. We will be back again.

stayed here in a ground floor apartment, after reading some bad reviews on trip advisor i was sceptical about going but although the complex is only just finished and taking into account the problems in egypt lately was the reason it was quiet. but the place is gorgeous and the pool area is really nice. we got talking to a couple who had bought there and they explained all about saahl hasheesh and when the whole complex is finished it will be amazin! my husband loved the snorkelling and the sea is stunning. don't listen to the bad reviews as the place is lovely. cant wait to go again.

Room Tip: ground floor garden as nearer to the pools

I love Egypt and havenever been disappointed in holidays there. This hotel however is not yet finished and show not be taking payments from guests until it is. We arrived late one evening with 2 yound children and were taken to our room. We thought it wa a mistake because the kitchen still had plaster everywhere, the ground floor appartment has no curtains, kitchen was completely empty off cooking utencils, bathroom had plaster and toilet was dirty, Looks didn;t work and there was no safe and no additional bedding for children. We were shown to aother room to wait whilst they rectified all the things that were bot ready. No bar, restaurant, shops on site were open and it was only 7pm. We would come back some days & the door would be wide open by the cleaner, we were given a safe but it was not attached to anything, so I'm not sure what the purpose of it was. I've never been so glad to leave a hotel and head home as I have this one.

Thank you for taking the time to review our apartments at Sunset Pearl and I am really sorry to hear of the problems you encountered on resort.

Please accept my sincere apologies for the shortcomings that you encountered as we work very hard to ensure all our guests are completely satisfied with their holiday and we obviously fell short of our normal standards on this occasion.

I notice that your stay was back in January 2011 and since then we have put new procedures in place to ensure that apartments allocated to guests are absolutely perfect in terms of decor and facilities and amenities which will mean what happened with yourself will not happen again.

Sunset Pearl is a new resort as is Sahl Hasheesh as a destination and there have been some teething problems during the initial opening phases. These problems have now been eliminated though as the resort is fully operational.

I can only apologise again for the standard of accommodation received and I can assure you that this will not reoccur should you wish to return to Sahl Hasheesh. Thanks again for your comments as its only with such comments that we can improve on the servcies we offer.
