Very nice 4 star hotel. Exactly as I expected, wanted a weeks relaxation in guaranteed sun in quiet hotel, that is what we got. Service very good, food in Tuscany restaurant especially sea bass was great. Thought marina restaurants especially the White Elephant (Thai) and The Lodge was excellent. Free shuttle bus service from hotel to marina was nice touch just wish return journey was later than 10 so you didnt have to put up with the taxis, rip off merchants as other comments have said, I just sat in the back with my eyes closed for 10 mins back to hotel! Mr Alla in island bar an absolute gentleman. All in all lovely week snorkelling and sunbathing.

It came after a trip on the Nile, in the MS Sun Ray. A bit of a drop on the service side.
Anyhow, the hotel is adequate. Nothing special to recommend it but not 5 star. Service in a 5 star should make you feel special, not adequate.
The Hotel itself is non descript. You would not know that you were in Egypt.
A real pity. It would be nice to experience an Egyptian theme
The rooms are OK. House keeping needs an upgrade from 3 star level. They are willing but dont really make the grade. If the various potiions were labelled with colour you might not get the three shampoos, instead of the shampoo, shower gel, and lotion.
We had fun with the ladies in the Beauty Salon. Entertaining !!
Breakfast was fine. 4 star really. We had a B&B arrangement and ate mostly in Tuscany ( their Italian restaurant). Food was good , but not 5 star, and the "Specials" were a dish off the menu.
A special should be another dish for the evening.

Generally it is an adequate hotel. reasonable beds, good for kids, clean and with plenty of staff to clear at breakfast.
Some people shine, A Swiss lady on reception , and Mickail, from the mangement team, who were willing to try for the 5 star achievement.

I would rate it a good 4 star experience, but quite outside Hurghada central as a location.
Watch for the Taximen who will try to rip you off !!!! Big Time !! A 10 lE trip will become a 50LE trip unless you are careful.
But I suppose we expect that.
We went to the Marina. It was a disappointment.

All told a bit uneventful. Fine for Sun. Needs something else

Sorry for the late review, we stayed here late Oct. 2009/early Nov. 09. It was quite busy, but we always found a place on the beach or by the pool. The little lagoon off the beach was very nice. The kids had a great time building sand castles and collecting little shells and pieces of coral. We all enjoyed the activities thoroughly. Even I played beach volleyball for the first time in my life!

The breakfast buffet was very nice. We had other meals outside. Cannot comment on hotel buffets. Outside food was okay.

Unless things have changed since last year, a warning for non-smoking Americans - you'll be in for a culture shock! It's extremely difficult to avoid second-hand smoke. Most of the guests were European at the time.

The service and activities at the hotel were superb! Kids Club, too! I would return if it becomes a non-smoking facility someday.

We stayed here for two weeks on a B&B basis. It's not as impressive as the professional photos show but nevertheless it is a very clean and comfortable hotel to stay in. The double room we'd booked was of an adequate, average size. We had a sea view which was very nice and just off the main bathroom there was a separate vanity area with sink that as a lady, I was very pleased with. The bed was queen sized and extremely comfortable plus there was a nice flat screen tv with a fair few English channels one of which had movies on every evening. The air con was good but a little noisy. The towels were plentiful and were changed every day, along with extra toilet roll and any complimentary toileltries etc you may have used and you could just leave a card (that was provided) on your bed any time you wanted the linen changed. There was no hassle in terms of cleaning staff trying to get in during the day, you just leave a 'Do Not Disturb' sign up and they keep away.
It is expensive to eat and drink at the hotel so although we did this once or twice we mainly ate and drank out. The water you buy in their cafe is expensive and the price seemed to change every day - so you're better off buying outside (there is a small shop called Lord's just a little down the road on the opposite side when you turn left out of the hotel). The pool is small for a 5 star hotel but it does the job. The beach is also very small but it's a great experience swimming in the Red Sea. You can snorkel and dive there. Prepare to be hassled on the beach by people trying to get you to book.
Also, other tourists put their towels out very early so unfortunately if you want a space on the beach you have to do the same. The buffet style breakfast was ok - it had a variety of foods to suit most tastes and they make fresh omlettes on request in front of you.
The entertainment in the bar leaves a lot to be desired though so after one night of belly dancing and wallet busting drink we decided to go elsewhere. The hotel could do with a bit updating decor wise but this doesn't take away from the experience.
Location wise it's not bad - located between the Marina and Downtown (also called Sakala I believe).

Taxis: They will be the bane of your existance. From the moment you step outside the hotel they are on you like flies on ****. They just constantly beep their horns and ask you if you want a taxi. Some don't even get the message they continue to kerb crawl beside you until you have to tell them to get lost. Always make sure you agree the price beforehand. From the Marriott it should be no more than 10 pounds to the Marina and 15 pounds to go Downtown. They will haggle like hell with you but if you threaten to walk away and get the taxi behind 99% of the time they back down. Some even have a meter which shows that your trip should only have cost 5 pounds but good luck trying to explain that to them. Women be wary - the taxi drivers are like all men I've experienced in Egypt, very sleazy. They try to get a good gawp at your body and one grabbed my hand to kiss it even though my husband was there. A German man we had befriended told us that one of the evenings he was in a taxi with his 14yr old daughter (he'd sat in the front) the taxi driver reached around 3 times to feel his daughter's leg and when they got out he tried to lunge at her for a kiss!!!

Egyptian Men: Following on from the above, some advice for fellow females: it is safer to travel in groups and with men. Egyptian men are the sleaziest kind I've ever experienced. Particularly in Cairo and Luxor. We had awful experiences; they glared and said the most disgusting things to me in front of my husband. I was very conservative about what I wore but it made no difference. So if you're easily offended - reconsider going to Egypt. We've been to see the Pyramids and the Valleys of the Kings and Queens which was the only real attraction for going - so we will never go back.

Hurghada: I wouldn't really recommend it. It's mainly German and Russian people who come here (don't get me wrong I've no problem with them). Maybe Sharm El Sheikh would have been better as it's more commercialised. Hurghada has a real lack of decent bars, restaurants and general nightlife. We struggled to find places to go in the evenings and consequently became a bit bored. Downtown was crazy. We ended up walking down the middle of the road on a cemented area every evening until we chose the place we wanted to go into. You will be hassled mercilessly to go into places and even scammed (one guy was trying to drag us into his shop down a dark alley way insisted that he worked as a security guard in our hotel part-time - we didn't fall for it). Again, sleazy men everywhere. I wouldn't recommend Downtown for anything.

THE MARINA: Much nicer especially the area on the end closer to the Marriott. It's quieter and there is less hassle. It's very hard to find a cold beer in Egypt (stick to bottles) but I can recommend Siva bar (bit pricey but nice with big outdoor sports screen) and Carina's Cafe - very cheap. There is also a bar called 'Big Brother' up the far end of the Marina which is nice for a cold beer and smoking the shisha.

DRINK: A good variety of beer is also lacking in Egypt. You'll only get Heineken, Sakara and some other Egyptian local beers. Cocktails in most places were awful (Siva's good but expensive) and as a big cocktail drinker I was very disappointed.

FOOD- standard in Egypt is awful. It's difficult to find a good place. There is a nice Italian next to Siva bar though, a beautifully decorated small Indian restaurant almost hidden on one end of the outside of the Grand Resort Hotel (on the Marina road) and just up from that a nice Lebanese food eating area. Our German friend's stayed in the Grand Resort Hotel. It is absolutely beautiful from the inside out, great entertainment with nightclub, lovely pools and great location. Very romantic rooms apparently. We'd almost regretted not booking there instead.

SHOPS: You will be hassled and haggled with ALL the time. It is exhausting so we stopped going anywhere near them. However we did find three major souvenir stores near Siva bar end on both sides of the street - two of which were called The Star of Hurghada but I can't remember the other. Most shops don't show prices and they will make up prices as they go along.

Tour: We booked with Royal Dream Tours in Downtown (at the extreme end just past the mermaid roundabout on the right hand side. Don't book with them - they are rip off merchants. Please see the following link which contains some info about what happened: http://www.tripadvisor.ie/ShowUserReviews-g294205-d1751011-r77348460-Karnak_Hotel-Luxor_Nile_River_Valley.html

We booked Cairo and Luxor through them. Cairo not so bad - Luxor a nightmare. They try to dump you in alabaster, perfume and papyrus factories during your trip. They say there is no pressure to buy but this is not true. Even when you pay for a particular itinerary you may not get to all the places. We didn't get to see the Luxor Temple or go to a street bazaar. which we had paid for They give lame excuses and the trip is badly run. Everyone was complaining about it. The food you get on the trip wouldn't even make rat food. They even brought one group to the Karnak Hotel for lunch (thankfully we missed out on that - another long story) but see link above for Karnak hotel description. The other tourists said that only for the fact that there was fruit with the lunch buffet, they woudn't have eaten at all.

GENERAL INFO: During August it's a scorcher and as someone who loves the heat, I found it very hard to deal with. I nearly collapsed near the Pyramids. You will find yourself constantly dehydrated - you may need close to 10 litres of water a day just for yourself. At night it's no better - in fact, the wind is like a hairdryer on full blast in your face.
It was also the month of Ramadan while we were there. It didn't really affect us but there were some bars outside the resort and in Luxor that woudn't serve alcohol (Hotels always will though).

Ok so there you have it. Apologies for the length and any rants. I could say much more but if you have any questions, feel free to contact me here ;)

We stayed at Marriott for 10 nights and we had a great time. The hotel is very nice, our room was great with beautiful seaview. The pool is ok, but not for 5 stars hotel, the beach is good but relatively small so we spent all the time in the little island in front of the hotel. The restaurant is nice, but the food is not so varied as I expected.
The stuff is friendly, only the man who worked in the exchange office in the hotel was terribly unkind.

Everybody in Marriott is trying his best to serve you, specially on breakfast and dinner, but the resort needs maintenance since it is old fashioned now. Old TV's, old Bathrooms, and the pool and area near the beach needs renovation so that it looks bright and well maintained. The entrance to the gym needs extra payment and it is far away out of the hotel, also you have to wait at breakfast till a table is free in order to sit down. The guest relation officer rarely sits on her table so you do not know her till you are going to leave. The Ar conditioning system is great and the people on the reception are great too.The location is very good and there are nearby supermarket to buy water and anything needed.
