As a newly, same-sex married couple who live in the United Kingdom, we wanted a quick, easy-to-get-to, sun-filled, one week holiday. After hours and hours of researching we decided upon The Oberoi, Sahl Hasheesh. Both of us have traveled extensively around the world and have stayed at hotels classified as luxury. From the moment we were greeted at the airport, our experience was one of kindness, service, and ease. Note: I have been wanting to write this review for weeks now, but have finally made the right time to give the Oberoi justice. I mention this because when we were there in early January, and arrived to the hotel grounds, the lobby had this beautifully lit candle display upon entry (a holiday decoration that was taken down a few days later). This was such a warm way to be welcomed accompanied by hand and face towels, tea or juice.
We were then taken to our room (we were upgraded to a Superior Deluxe) via their golf cart service - our room was located on the first tier of rooms by the ocean. Breathtaking to look out upon the enticing, dreamy-blue waters.
Our room was perfect for two people with its sitting area (where every morning you are given a bowl of different fruits), outdoor eating and lounging area, walk-in closet, and bathroom. The sunken bath tub calls to you to relax - the only note here is that there usually isn't enough hot water to properly fill it.
Prior to our arrival the hotel sends you a questionnaire for any special requests and to get to know your preferences. They knew we were newly married, and as we were unpacking they sent over a celebratory chocolate cake to acknowledge our union. This was a nice touch especially as we weren't sure how we'd be received as a same-sex couple in a predominately Muslim country. As for the security and sense of safety, we felt peaceful and well-taken care of. The political climate in Cairo, and the general issues within Egypt were not felt in Sahl Hasheesh.
We booked a variety of spa treatments which we highly recommend experiencing - the couples spa room is lovely. If you can book a couples treatment - deep tissue, Thai, or an Ayurvedic full-body massage - do it, pamper yourself. There is a sauna in the backyard you can use before or after the treatment with tea being served to you afterwards as well. Everyone in the spa department are incredibly helpful and attentive.
The beach staff, at various times, come around with towels, water, hibiscus drinks, some fruit. They are there for any of your hydration, towel, sun lotion needs. The sun shines, the water is clear, the staff cheerful however, do note it does get windy which can create a sense of chilliness - dependent upon your body temperature. The back area to our room was a nice refuge from the wind, and allowed for the sun's warmth to shine through.
The food...where to begin. Room service is excellent and very accommodating - thank you to the delivery staff who took care of us. I wound up coming down with a cold while there, and the hotel made every concession to help me with ginger tea, the delivery of DVDs when I was feeling very poorly (decent film selection - for kicks we watched "Lawrence of Arabia"), and the preparation of special meals if I needed them.
The breakfast buffet is delicious (if you are open to trying a variety of cultural cuisines - try the Egyptian and Indian breakfasts) which is served in the main restaurant. The Indian Restaurant was only open 1-day during our stay (again delectable) however, the Chef made us special Indian dishes as well as gluten-free breads whenever we asked.
The gentlemen who came to clean the room every day were meticulous and sweet.
Dhiren (General Manager), and the support staff - Mahmoud, Ossama, the women in the Spa (*I'm sorry I'm forgetting the woman's name who runs the Spa - she was incredibly helpful) provided us with wonderful service. Really, all the staff at the Oberoi were great - even if we can't remember everyone's name!
Overall, we loved our time at the Oberoi as we felt pampered, relaxed, and well taken care of.
Thank you, and we look forward to returning again very soon.
Our very best wishes to all of you!
