Festival Shedwan Golden Beach Resort
Ranked #119 of 222 Hotels in Hurghada
Reviewed 22 February 2009

We had booked a package with flight and a week hb at the Shedwan Golden Beach with a superior room. The overall experience was positive.

Arrival and checking in.
We arrived sometime around 1am. The registration process was Egyptian: inefficient and lengthy.
Unfortunately, the room we got was definitely not a superior room; filthy and small, I would at best leave my dog sleep there. We turned around and went to the reception claiming that we had booked a superior room. The clerk smiled sourly and handed us other keys. This time, we were ok with it (room E13).

The room.
The hotel must have been great 20 years ago. Well laid out bathroom and entrance with huge mirrors and an adequate size to stay for a week. Although not well maintained and not impeccably clean (dust on everything), it was ok. The strongest point for me: the hotel is extremely quiet - and I have a very light sleep. The thin mattress (I guess about 10cm thin) is worn out but comfortable enough as it lies on a wooden bedframe. If you like hard beds (Japanese style), you should be fine.
The tv program includes a number of German stations, BBC and some other, but the tv signal is weak and the image often full of noise.

The food.
With hb you get a morning and evening buffet. Every evening there is a different "topic", e.g. Egyptian/European etc. The quality of food is ok and none of the people I met had any food-related health problems. Personally, I liked the "local food" best (kabab and koshary) and always went for the fresh fruit (morning: fruit salad, evening usually oranges, bananes and melons). They seem to cater to the palate of kids (family-friendly hotel) as the choice of desserts is outstanding.

The place.
The Shedwan hotel includes a huge garden with tennis, beachvolleyball and other sports as well as a large and sandy beachfront. You can easily stay there all week without leaving the complex.
Location-wise the hotel is near the old-town, so forget about getting free wifi and sorts. The restaurants and shops around are not great, so you might either take a cab to the "new center" (about 15 Egyptian pounds one-way) by asking to be taken to McDonald's. There you also have free wifi and a couple of restaurants and shops.

Conclusion.
Nice for a week if you're not fussy. Consider it for a casual week if you want to unwind, enjoy a nice beach and maybe go to Luxor. But I wouldn't go there for my honeymoon.

well just back from shedwan golden beach, accom was on hb ,breakfast and dinners were repeated every 3/4 days same choice of menu ,food was above average quality and you would have needed too be a very fussy eater not to get something .food out side also very good.
hotel mainly catered for large scandinavian, russian and german tourists, rooms were shabby chic ,linen and towels when we were there were changed every day,was in room 110 where the maids meet every morn ,so can be a bit chatterbox noise from 7am onward, staff were very pleasent &,helpful, remember no female cleaners all male staff.
it is not a 10min walk into hurghada town it will take you nearly 1and a half/2 hours to walk ,when we left daytime temp. at 26 and that was the 4th feb.
taxi 10 egyptian dollars no more into town ,if u want to go hardrock cafe 20/25 dollar make sure u say egypiandollars before u get into taxi or haggle a better price ,lots to do and see so dont stay in hotel u are safe and will feel safe walking about . have been to alot of contries where i havent felt safe walking about but not here .taxi tooting and people trying to get u to buy from there shops constant, beaches lovely and clean and lots of entertainment on offer ,good spa massage but dont be fooled by price its in euros.last but not least budget your tips at about 7egyptian dollars roughly a pound ,dont take pound coins u will only be asked politely if u can give them there own money this hotel has a cash machine so take english money . we were gettin a goodrate and put in as many multiplies of notes as u can as u get charged less commission so go enjoy and i will look forward to reading what u have to say

Poorly maintained, old facilities. Unfriendly staff. Terrible food. Dirty rooms. No hot water in the showers - lukewarm at best. The beach is its only selling point, but the Zahabia's beach, down the street, is also nice AND it has good snorkeling. Skip the Shedwan Golden Beach!

Terrible service upon check-in. Arrived at 1:50 am and didn't receive room key until 2:35 - simply unacceptable. Overall attitude of the gentlemen behind the reception was terrible - arrogant and not helpful.

After waiting 45 min. for the keys to the room we found a room with a toilet that couldn't flush, no towels and a telephone that wasn't working - so I had to run down to the reception and ask for somebody to fix the problems. Luggage service was included in the package deal, but I simply picked up the bags myself as they were still sitting in front of the hotel with nobody watching over it.

When we returned from the beach the following day all the above were fixed.

The beach and pool areas of the hotel are the main attractions - plenty to choose from in regards to beach bars and activities.
It's difficult to find absolute peace and quiet on the beach as there are salesman bothering guests all the time. They will try to sell you everything from sea food dinners to massages. They will pretty much only leave you alone if you are sleeping or desperately trying to avoid them. This does not apply to the bar staff and the animation crew, who are generally very curtious and helpful.

Upon check-out the reception staff once again proved their incompetence. Not able to accept credit cards for payment, minibar not correctly charged and had no change for cash payment. Ironically, they cheated themselves for around 500 Egyptian Pounds as we had a lot of bar charges that was not charged to our room account.

A nice stay overall, but definitely more due to the nice weather and surroundings than the service of the hotel staff.

Forget about shopping or visiting the city of Hurghada - an absolute dump with cheap imitations and annoying sales people. Do a Jeep safari or go on a snorkling boat instead, but remember to do it through the hotel or your travel agent's representatives.

Will not come back to Hurghada or the Golden Beach - at least not if I'm paying myself....

I stayed with my wife a week at the Shedwan Golden Beach (diving vacation), which is a 3-star hotel. From my perspective, it offers good value for the money we payed. The room was clean and spacious, the bed (+ rest of the furniture) was all right. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, and things like the garden, the pool etc. were in good condition. Minor details such as a problem with the air condition (which has been fixed within hours) can happen, so that is not a problem. But I still recommend to keep in mind to expect a five-star hotel when going to that hotel. Book it, if you are looking for a tidy room, nice staff etc. for a reasonable price. If you are looking for luxury, there are more suitable places in Hurghada - which are logically more expensive. May be a remark for divers: there is a diving center (Ozone) on the hotel property which is really good. They have a big boat, the technical equipment is well-maintained, and the diving locations they choose are excellent. So the hotel in combination with the diving center is highly recommended.

We stayed at the Shedwan Golden Beach for one week. We had a standard room, as the superior rooms were sold out. The hotel claims to be a 4 star plus. As probably all of us know, you have to deduct at least one star from the official rating. The hotel itself was OK, the food is more or less the same in all hotels in Egypt - no matter of stars - as far as I have eperienced. A lot of chicken varieties every day, beef - mostly in some form like goulash - only once a week lamb and some fish. The self-service area is a bit small, so it takes a while to get what you want. I noticed a funny thing: When you ordered a diet coke they mixed a normal coke with sprite! As in other reviews of this hotel mentioned, the room has seen better times and the bathroom was very run down, mouldy and with cracked tiles. The hotel is OK for a cheap holiday for one week - that would be enough.

This was our third visit to Hurghada, we usually stay at the Sunrise El Palacio. We went to the Shedwan Garden Hotel this year as El Palacio had been taken over by Sunny Days and our friends in Egypt advised us against staying there this year. We thought a four star aIl inclusive would be just the job but, how wrong we were.
We arrived at the Shedwan Garden Hotel at around 10:30pm after a two and a half hour delay, so needless to say we were a little cheesed off. The hotel from the outside and the lobby areas are beautiful. Check in went smooth and we were shown to our rooms by the bell boys. When we got to the rooms and turned on the light we was disgusted! We had a rusty old fridge on castors with a TV on the top, stains on the bedding, thick dust hanging from the air con unit, a dirty bathroom and mould half way up the shower curtain. I looked at my husband and said this is not what the picture looked like in the Panorama brochure. I went down to reception and asked to be moved. This didn’t happen so I called the Panorama 24 hour line and demanded somebody came to the hotel straight away. Debbie from Panorama was there within 20 minutes as promised.
After Debbie inspected the rooms we had been allocated she insisted the hotel move us to a better room. We were given 2 rooms in the main block on the top floor (these did look like the brochure). Which albeit was not 100% clean it was 100% better than the first rooms. After our first nights stay we had to complain again. The hotels main air con unit is located on the roof directly above our rooms and the noise kept us awake, the signal on the TV was very poor (we complained 4 times about the TV reception then gave up) and the water kept stopping especially when you were taking a shower in the evening. The food was the same slop every day apart from breakfast on day 4 when we shared it with a cockroach. You also had constant drilling and hammering as they renovated the building under the restaurant. We believe they served what they did to get you to book for one of the a la carte restaurants (very expensive). We know there are a lot of restaurants at reasonable prices to eat at in Hurghada.
All the staff were very good, although, there seem to be too many "Chiefs" and not enough waiters in the foyer/bar. There is a entertainment group of 5/6 who spend most of their time at the Golden Beach (sister hotel next door) other than at 11.00am when they do aquarobics in the pool. This is the only time we saw them. All of the evening entertainment is held at the Golden Beach where we were told the all inclusive guests from the Shedwan Garden had to pay.
This hotel was meant to be a 4 star all inclusive – don’t believe it! We would rate this hotel as a 2 star hotel and that is being generous. In our opinion Shedwan Garden Hotel (HOTEL FROM HELL) should be given a very wide berth. Hurghada itself is a lovely place with some good hotels but not this one.
