We had booked a package with flight and a week hb at the Shedwan Golden Beach with a superior room. The overall experience was positive.
Arrival and checking in.
We arrived sometime around 1am. The registration process was Egyptian: inefficient and lengthy.
Unfortunately, the room we got was definitely not a superior room; filthy and small, I would at best leave my dog sleep there. We turned around and went to the reception claiming that we had booked a superior room. The clerk smiled sourly and handed us other keys. This time, we were ok with it (room E13).
The hotel must have been great 20 years ago. Well laid out bathroom and entrance with huge mirrors and an adequate size to stay for a week. Although not well maintained and not impeccably clean (dust on everything), it was ok. The strongest point for me: the hotel is extremely quiet - and I have a very light sleep. The thin mattress (I guess about 10cm thin) is worn out but comfortable enough as it lies on a wooden bedframe. If you like hard beds (Japanese style), you should be fine.
The tv program includes a number of German stations, BBC and some other, but the tv signal is weak and the image often full of noise.
With hb you get a morning and evening buffet. Every evening there is a different "topic", e.g. Egyptian/European etc. The quality of food is ok and none of the people I met had any food-related health problems. Personally, I liked the "local food" best (kabab and koshary) and always went for the fresh fruit (morning: fruit salad, evening usually oranges, bananes and melons). They seem to cater to the palate of kids (family-friendly hotel) as the choice of desserts is outstanding.
The Shedwan hotel includes a huge garden with tennis, beachvolleyball and other sports as well as a large and sandy beachfront. You can easily stay there all week without leaving the complex.
Location-wise the hotel is near the old-town, so forget about getting free wifi and sorts. The restaurants and shops around are not great, so you might either take a cab to the "new center" (about 15 Egyptian pounds one-way) by asking to be taken to McDonald's. There you also have free wifi and a couple of restaurants and shops.
Nice for a week if you're not fussy. Consider it for a casual week if you want to unwind, enjoy a nice beach and maybe go to Luxor. But I wouldn't go there for my honeymoon.
