We travelled to Hurghada as a family for 2 weeks 18th Feb - 4th March 2014.Me,my partner both 26years & our son 6years old. I was also 21weeks pregnant at the time so ready for our last holiday as a 3 to relax.Firstly id like to say we always travel with Thomas cook & have visted Egypt once before but travelled to Sharm-el-sheik.Both Going & coming home were fantastic flights which I am glad of as a hate flying.
On arrival everything was great, flight, transfers & check in at the stella makadi. We went to the welcome meeting on our first day and the rep at the hotel (sorry iv forgot his name) was great he will help with anything & being an Egyptian himself he knows a lot.
We were in the Stella Gardens, pool view room 1865.Lovely room, very clean, everything you need. The hotel grounds are amazing. The pools are great and there is also a heated pool which although it was hot during the day and the sun shone constantly for two weeks is well needed as most of the pools were like ice baths. We couldn't have asked for better weather.2 weeks of 33degrees pure sunshine.
Although the hotel, grounds, pools etc were fantastic this hotel needs a lot of improvement. As I said earlier we have been to Egypt before with Thomas cook & stayed at the sunrise tirani aqua park,we also always go all inclusive so have visited enough to know that most of the time it can be done right. We thought we would try a different hotel with the stella makadi this time as we don't like to visit the same places but on reflection im gutted we didn't go with what we know.
Firstly the big issue here for us was the FOOD.The main buffet restaurant is rubbish. We would turn up look around and within a quick walk up and down the food we were gone & had to make do with other food facilities around the complex.Everything was covered in some sort of sauce so they would have chicken but it was covered in mushrooms,ok if you like mushrooms but your screwed if you don't.They would have a big turkey carved up but no potatoes or veg to go with it.They had beef but it has been cooked in oil so cheap that all that could be tasted was the oil.If your lucky they would have chips but really they are just potatoes cut in the shape of a chip. The rice was boiled so much it was like mush. The whole restaurant just needs re-analysing so much more can be done to help improve the range and quality of the food.
Another problem with the food was the al la carte restaurant booking system which can only be described as an absolute shambles. There are 4 al la carte restaurants if you want some sort of decent food whilst staying here you must book in the restaurants.Firsty though you must queue up for an hour before the seating times to ensure you get a seat..be quick though as the Russians have no sense of queuing!! For example the Italian first seating was at 6:30 so around 5:00 you can waste an hour of your holiday sat outside waiting just to get your name down on the list with a staff member who pops out at 6:00.Alright if its not busy but if it is and your not stood right next to the door people like to push in and if there's too many names down before you then you don't get a place. This really does need sorting as newcomers to the holiday kept coming down at 6:30 expecting to be seated but have no idea that you need to queue an hour before. There is nowhere that explains this to you, even our rep got it wrong at the welcome meeting.
The second big thing that needs improving here is the ENTERTAINMENT. There are some lovely members of the entertainment team here but the night entertainment is extremely poor. The entertainment was also more suited towards Russians and Germans. Which made it boring to watch. When you go all inclusive and there is nothing around your hotel its important that there is a decent entertainment package. Again there is so much more that can be done with this, the shows were rubbish in the whole 2 weeks there was not one single show that I thought oh yeah that was quite good tonight, instead we found ourselves going to bed early watching a film on the tv as this more appealing. Again its not the fault of the entertainment team there just needs to be more outside entertainment brought in Eg - magicians, dancers proper acts.
There is also no beer or alcohol served at the entertainment beer meaning you have to go up to the lobby. The lobby bar area is very dirty, the seats are covered in stains from spilt drinks - some new seating wouldn't go a miss. The music around the pool areas need changing more often,i think I know the whole tracklist off by heart of the one cd that was constantly played.
Some smaller problems:
The beach was lovely, good food at the beach too which helps. No ice cream the whole two weeks which was also a let down as the shops charged nearly £4 for an ice lolly, Again you expect ice cream at an all inclusive.
Although there was lifts in the hotel there were no handrails anywere,I slipped a few times on the marble stairs which is obviously very dangerous even more so being pregnant.
Sheets on the bed are not fitted.Ok if they are big sheets and stay put but they don't.Often we would wake up and find we were asleep on the mattress which is gross as there are no protectors on them.
Most of the staff members are lovely, we don't tip as we expect good customer service anyway by this I just mean a smile & a polite hello we don't go away expecting people to serve us like slaves we just want a nice time & help ourselves.
Prepare to be mythered by the spa people, diving, quad biking etc even a polite no thank you doesn't help they will myther you whatever.
As iv said before the hotel is mostly Russians and Germans although most of them were nice most were rude and even smiling at them you get nothing back, This actually was another major letdown of the holiday. We like to meet people and have a chat with others but couldn't.
Overall we had a lovely time just relaxing and being as a family in the sun.
So much more can be done to improve this hotel we were ready to get home which is very unusual for us as we usually have major holiday blues & don't want to leave.
