“Not sure about the five stars????”
Reviewed 25 November 2012

Please note we haven't been on a package holiday for over 10 years so a bit different for us and makes it hard to review somewhat.

First impressions were not good.

To begin with we are avid readers of reviews as we normally book everything and make all our own travel arrangements tailored to our own needs. This is where we read the first valuable tip about when you arrive at the airport.
Regarding the visa situation, you are very quickly herded towards the red sea holiday desks by the reps (as we were with red sea) and this is where they charge you £13 each for a visa. Then you still have to line up to go through passport control with everyone else.
There is in fact 3 blue bank + exchange booths immediately to your left as you enter arrivals. This is where you can purchase the same visa for £9.50. So not a bad little earner for whoever gets the extra £3.50 per person. We calculated there were at least 50 people on our coach alone and i think there were about 6 coaches. By our calculations this amounts to over £1000 and then they still ask you to tip the driver, this set the scene for the rest of the holiday!!

On arrival to the Makadi Spa we were greeted by a load of bell boys who insisted we leave our luggage with them even if you didn't want to. Again, we are not used to this service and quite frankly can carry our own bags for free.

We were sent to eat at the view bar for our first evening meal as there is a booking system for all evening meals. They neglected to mention that we could have used several other restaurants at the neighbouring hotels which were far better as the meal we were served was some of the worst food we have ever eaten!!

In our time we ate at all the Spa restaurants,
Fish = very good
Steak = average, steak over cooked and stater very poor
Tapas = complete let down, they have not grasped the concept of tapas being that you have a few small different dishes and serve a 3 course meal. Although they have now changed it and have a spanish chef so hopefully this should improve
Asian = excellent in every way, the other restaurants could learn a hell of a lot from this place.

restaurants on other sites,
Carribean = very good
Thai = terrible
Italian = poor
Buffet restaurants = good

Drinks the same in all the bars and not quite 'all inclusive'. And like a previous review on here it was very disappointing that we could not use the lobby bar as you could on the first night. The atmosphere this would have created would have been more a holiday one. You could drink at the bar but it would cost you.....

The rooms were wonderful, extremely spacious and well appointed. Free mini bar. Balcony bigger than my front room. Bed big enough for 4 people. Large flat screen TV but not many english channels. Air con was not quite up to the task and very noisy.

Pool area gorgeous, but yes people did reserve sunbeds and i hate to say it wasn't just the Germans.... Pools very cold but bearable. Staff very good and kept you well served with drinks. There was even a man who came to polish your sunglasses!

Man made beach not bad but sand quality very poor and rough. Use pier at far end to get to reef for snorkelling, which was very good.

Location all depends on what you want from your holiday. In the middle of nowhere, with only the hotels for entertainment.

The complimentary pool towels and beach bag very nice touch. However, the man who came to change them every evening ignored the 'DO NOT DISTURB' sign each time even though we had left them outside the door and still knocked. On not answering the door because either asleep or in the shower he still entered the room!!! I can only assume this was because he thought this was the only way he was going to get a tip out of us, how wrong he was!!!

Apart from that member of staff all the others were great.

Just a last note, we had been ill during our stay and needed to cancel a trip we had booked and paid for. Please be aware that if you are going to be ill you need to do so 36 hours in advance to get a full refund. You can go to the doctors for a sick note at a cost of, we were quoted £60 to see the doctor and then £60 to get a sick note....

In summary, lovely hotel, average drinks, food needs to improve, attentive staff but one can't help but think this is because they are all after tips.... We are told that this is their culture, however one does not pay for 'all inclusive' and then expect to stump up even more cash to make up for the 'bad wages' their multi billionaire owner pays them.

Really not sure about the 5 stars and who awarded them???

After extensive research for our first ever trip to the Red Sea, we chose Makadi Spa for a week earlier this month.
We must have been a bit naive as thought 5* would surely be similar to 5* in UK - but don't be fooled... it's more like 3* in our opinion - think it's a marketing tool to attract us Brits under what we feel, is false pretences.
It's interesting to read several reviews from others since we returned home - but the general theme appears to be 'could do better' and 'not living up to expectations'. So, do consider going but with an open mind - expect service to be haphazard & somewhat chaotic in every bar and restaurant - but sit back with a drink (if the don't run out of several choices) - just enjoy the pleasant surrounds and warm weather.
Have to say, we won't be falling over ourselves to return here, even when it's finished - which, in typical Egyptian time, may well be another couple of years away. Don't hold your breath, O fellow holidaymaker...!

Room Tip: make sure you ask for a room that DOESN'T overlook the unfinished spa - eyesore from above :-(

We have just returned form 2 weeks at the Makadi Spa, again i have to agree that on arrival the hotel looks great and the rooms are amazing (though we did not get a promised upgrade - we expected something as it was our honeymoon but got a plate of mouldy fruit instead!) they are all suites and we had one over looking the sea (unfortunately we also backed onto the sister hotel and that could be quite noisy!)

we can use all the bars, restaurants and pools of the sister hotels (except waterworld) but they cant use ours which was nice!

its also adult only with a broad range of ages - did not hear any building noise but the hotel is a long way from being finished

Location is ok but after 2 weeks we were going a tad stir crazy as there is really only the complex of all the hotels and the mall ... everything else is a taxi ride away - we opted for a couple of trips which did help!

so lets start with the pros:

1) rooms - as stated cant be beaten - love the glass screen between the bathroom and the bedroom!
2) pools and beach location - fab if you dont mind being remote from the town and the infinity pool is cold (other one is now heated) also got a bit fed up on the beach from the massage staff that would not take no for an ansa!
3) staff - happy to help and mostly smiling at all times - special thanks to Mohammed and Mahmood at the Infinity Bar and Mohammed in the Garden Bar

now the cons:

1) food - unfortunately we were struck down with bad tums - food was often lukewarm when we received it, with the exception of the asian which we loved - steak and fish restaurants were good but tapas was a disappointment!
2) packed breakfast for the trips - rubbish! best you do it yourself the night before (ours did not even have a bottle of water in)
3) they dont enforce the dress code which is a shame - especially in the a la carte restaurants
4) they dont enforce the ban on towels on sunbeds either - the pool area is fab but a lot of shade therefore the best sunbeds go first - some people told me they were getting up at 5 to get a towel on a bed and then going back to their rooms!
5) niggling moan - hairdryer is rubbish take your own if you can!
6) air con is great but ours was too noisy to leave on at night

my other moan is about night check outs, its fab as you can stay in your room until 30 mins before departure but when your flight is at 2am you dont really care about making noise, then the housekeepers go in, then the new arrivals turn up - as the floor is all marble and you have the windows open you can imagine what the sleep is like if you are next to or under one of those rooms!

I would go back if the food was of a higher standard and it was served hot which may help the stomach bugs which were rife in the 2 weeks we were there (and they improved the cocktails - everyone you had was different than the one before!) i would also suggest that if you are planning on going get a prescription from uk to take with you or get medicine from chemist on arrival (its in the mall) as the sooner you start taking if you get symptoms the better!

it was our first trip to Egypt so not sure if this was a 5 star - at the moment i would say it looks like a 5 star but the cons bring it down to a 4 star that can be improved

Guests are mainly from UK and Germany - English been the language all the staff understand - if you can learn a few words of Arabic that goes down really well!

Hope that helps!

P.S - the trip to Luxor was a very long one - 4 hours by coach there and 5 on the way back, be prepared for that and also the hassle as you reach the sites

the jeep safari was also good - if you do go make sure you get in Yassers jeep!

Room Tip: try and get top floor overlooking the pool this will help negate the 'other guests' noise an...

We spent a week at Makadi Spa at the beginning of November. I will start with the positives. Rooms exceptional, hotel location wonderful and very polite and friendly staff and management team. Snorkelling very good lots to see. No disruption with building work during our stay. Weather gorgeous and we personally found the pool temperature fine as the weather was hot but know from previous visit that it is too cold to swim in winter months. Now the disappointing bits - first night we arrived had drinks in the lobby/pool bar which was busy with a good atmosphere. Unfortunately on the second day we were informed that this area was not now all inclusive a decision which had been made by the management. Bearing in mind that this is the best place for evening drinks and socialising was a terrible let down and frankly spoilt our stay. The other bar which is the garden bar is ok but not a patch on the lobby/pool bar. In actual fact the lobby/pool bar was empty for the duration of our stay which makes one question the purpose of their decision! Now for the food - Asian good acceptable for Egypt and the Chinese OK. The fish restaurant fine in the evening but very hit and miss at lunchtime food always cold. The View was always cold for lunch and even sending it back still returned cold. The safest bet was the tuna sandwich. The pool bar lunchtime snacks were lukewarm bearing in mind they said it had just been freshly cooked!! When we spoke to the manager about this he even said cold food was unacceptable and hoped we had sent it back and he said he was going to speak to them about this. Also quite a fair amount of people had upset stomachs and some for more than 24 hours which would be understandable eating cold food!! If only they could get the food right, at an acceptable temperature and served at a faster pace I can honestly say this would be an exceptional 5 star hotel for Egyypt.

Before we arrived on holiday I wrote an honest opinion of the makadi spa as we had been before and promised I would write a review on return which I have done. We are not "moaners" normally but feel honest views are important to Tripadvisor. But this is just our opinion and I do think it is an important part of your holiday to be able to enjoy nice meals.

Date of stay was 2 November 2012

Regards

Edward and Eileen

Just returned from 2 weeks in November at the Makadi Spa - what can we say? - superb. The staff were brilliant so helpful & polite & nothing was too much trouble. The food was excellent - especially the steak & Tapas - special mention for Mohammed in the steak restaurant & Nagi in the Tapas - both were very attentive. The View restaurant for lunch was wonderful - especially being served by Ehab & Mostafa every day. The hotel is not finished - but we knew that before we went, but the building work is unobtrusive (mostly happening indoors). When the hotel is fully finished it will be outstanding - with another restaurant & huge spa & Turkish Baths - will it still be in our price range then?.The junior suites are huge & are cleaned immaculately by the room boys every day. The beach towels delivered to your room every evening is a lovely touch.
We did manage to view the superior suites on the 4 th floor which are not quite finshed - just awaiting installation of the jacuzzi baths on the balcony!!!!
The management are excellent - always accessible - nice to see a Eurpean manager who is making great strides in delivering excellence.
We had the romantic evening meal under the stars - 6 courses with wine - absolutely fantastic even if one of us did not eat fish or seafood - great job Stefan (executive chef)
The stars of the show are the pool boys who service the pool bars - they never forgot about you & never left you without a drink & always remembered where you were. They did a good snack lunch at the infinity bar. Special mention to treble zero eight from the pool bar - a good laugh.
We are returning in May for a special birthday - so that says it all really.
We had a fabulous time - one of the best holidays we have ever had in Egypt - well done all at thr Makadi Spa. Yes there were moaners - but you get that sort of person everywhere ( if the pool had been heated we wouldn't have used it & there were plenty people who did swim in it)- we set out to have a wonderful holiday & everybody at the hotel helped us to enjoy our stay there.

Room Tip: south facing rooms get the sun & north facing rooms have a breeze

My wife and I recently spent a week at the Makadi Spa. Overall we really enjoyed the hotel. The whole complex with the other 3 hotels gives you so much choice of places to eat and drink. Our favourites where the Asian and the Thai which were outstanding. The tapas was also very good. The choice on arrival was disappointing. We were told to go to the View restaurant, which is great as a bar but the food on the first night was poor, which gave a bad first impression. After a days travelling people want something a bit more special than chicken and cold chips. Luckily the experience for the rest of the stay was much better. I'd recommend a day trip to Luxor, which was very interesting. The only other negative was the pools. They are fantastic pools to look at but are soooo cold barely anyone uses them. I really couldn't understand why they felt so cold. Overall though a great spot which will be even better when the spa is complete.

My wife and I stayed at this hotel from October 5th for a week. We were both concerned at the poor reviews on Trip Advisor leading up to the date of our departure, however, we are glad that we still decided to go!

Warm welcome at the hotel on arrival and speedy checkin. Our room was on the third floor overlooking the infinity pool. The room was massive and clean and included a minibar which was refilled every day. Pool towels replaced every day in the evenings

Yes there a few teething problems that we experienced mainly to do with the food. A bad experience in the tapas restaurant however we were impressed by the waiter who acknowledged the issue, reported it to the foods and bev manager (and we later found out that the General Manager was also made aware of this) and insisted on trying a different dish. The steak house was hit and miss - good the first time and hence went again, however, poor service and food the second time. The good thing about the all inclusive option is that there are several a la carte restaurants throughout the complex rather than buffets everywhere like most all inclusive restaurants. The asian restaurant was the best - we visited several restaurants at the Makadi Palace and Grand Makadi - the Sunset Grill for lunch was execellent. We would recommend to venture to the other hotels for meals rather than just sticking to the Makadi Spa.

The front office manager was very helpful - Mr Ahmed Abdel Maksoud - we spoke to him about any issues and everything was resolved asap. The pool attendents were brilliant and even had a sun glass polisher every evening!! We previously read that the staff were always asking for tips, however, at no point did we feel this. Yes we did tip, 5 or 10 Egyptian pounds (£0.50 - £1 roughly) now and again.

One tip that someone suggested to us when we were on the flight to Hurghada was as soon as you enter the arrival terminal, the Red Sea agents will point you towards the right hand side for Visas and can be very forceful! However, if you turn left as soon as you enter the terminal, there are 3-4 Foreign Exchange Counters which also provide the Visa at a cheaper price than if you follow the instructions of the Red Sea agent. We paid £22 for 2 visas - the same visas we were told that others paid £30 for 2 visas at the Red Sea counter.

Yes we will be visiting Makadi Spa again, however, when it is fully completed - amazing hotel for a totally relaxing week!

Mr & Mrs Shah

Room Tip: Visit all restaurants in the complex, not just the Makadi Spa!
