“The hotel, where you have to fight for the room you want”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 September 2009

Just before my flight to Egypt I had a bad accident with my feet. I had problems woth walking. When I arrived, I told in the reception about my problem, but all I heard was laugh. I started insisting on room closer to the main building, but I've got the room only when my travel agent talked to the reception. I felt like I was nothing. After all the room I liked. But I felt humiliated and the truth was, what was written in internet comments - if you are from Russia, Lithuania, Latvia, not Germany or France, you won't have good room. I liked conditioning system in the room very much. Also animation of the hotel. And Shahrazada restaurant personal. I don't liked the night club music.

have been home a week now and missing the blue skies already. we were delayed by a couple of hours at gatwick which meant we arrived to the hotel in the dark. the airport was chaos and the reps would not let us get out of the airport without a visa even though we had already been told that we didn't need one if we were not travelling whilst in egypt. also the check in at the hotel took a little while which seemed longer with fed up hungry kids but all in all it wasn't too bad. we were then shown to our room with our cases to follow which was fine. we were very lucky with our room, a family room in the new block. huge room with 2 double beds for the kids then a small corridor with the bathroom off it , and corridor led to our main bedroom which had a massive bed which could have held us and both the kids, had a sofa in the room as well. a tv in our room and the kids room although we didn't really use them. the only downside if i had to give one was that we were a 5 min walk to get to the restaurants, however this was not a probelm as it built our appetite and walked off our dinner etc. we had a lovely pool right outside our building which we managed to get beds at every day which bearing in mind there was 8 of us in our party was pretty good. the pool varied from day to day as to how busy it was and was a bit chilly when you first got in but you soon got used to it and it was a blessed relief as the temp was in the 40's every day.

i was very nervous about being ill before we went due to some of the previous revies and to be honest we all suffered at some point or the other but it was not that bad and didn't stop any of us from doing anything and a visit to the pharmacist in tia heights ( next door) sorted us out with tablets. we also had to see the dr on site for a couple of things i.e ear infection and tonsilitus, he was very nice and no problem at all.

we only ate in the main buffet 1 night out of the 2 weeks we were there as it didn't really suit us, we prefered to go to around the world or the speciality restaurants, which we managed to book for 10 out of the 14 night. we went to around the world for breakfast as well and there was plenty on offer there to suit us all.

we did 2 trips while we were there. the sand buggies which we booked via the rep. this was very enjoyable and we also hired a boat for the day through the fellas that come round selling trips. this was really good although beware when going on a boat trip the water is very choppy on the way out but very smooth on the way back as you are then going with the waves. went to giftun island which was beautiful and then stopeed a couple of times on the way back to do some snorkelling.

the thomas cook rep was very nice and always on duty when she said she was going to be. vanessa was very helpful and on duty every day except sunday.

we only went to the beach twice as the beds were a bit on top of each other but it was lovely there. we also walked along to the beach next door ( to the left) as the reefs were much better and the snorkelling was better.

also if you can manage to get up in the morning to see the sunrise it's really worth it.

had a really lovely holiday, all the staff were lovely, not expecting tips but they are so lovely you do feel you want to some times as they get paid not much and work such long hours.

the place was so clean and the rooms were cleaned daily with new towels etc. the only thing is that there is a bit of a smell when they are watering the gardens but this doesn't last for long.

a really lovely place and would consider going back.

Our outward flight was delayed for two hours at Gatwick, but that was the only negative of the journey. There isn’t a huge amount of legroom, but it was OK. Hurghada airport was an experience. On arrival we got swept up with the rest of the flight and channelled towards the Thomas Cook desk, which meant our visas cost $18 each instead of $15. The transfer was quick around 30 minutes. We arrived at the hotel and after the formalities of checking in were taken to our room in block 10.
The room was spacious with two single beds and a kind of put-me-up bed for our daughter. It was all clean and well furnished. Our balcony gave us a sea view and a partial view over the family pool. The bathroom was large and spotlessly clean. The air-con was effective. We set it at 22°C which we found comfortable throughout our stay.
First impressions of the buffet were of chaos when you first went in, but to be fair you soon get to know your way around. They do alter things slightly on a daily basis which means things change position, which can add to the confusion until you suss it all out. We ate at the buffet twice in the evening and a good few times at lunchtime. The food was good. Plenty of choice was available, and wasn’t at all pitched towards a particular nationality/nationalities. We ate breakfast at the Round the World restaurant and also went there in the evening on a couple of occasions. No air-con as outside though. Melon and yoghurt, croissants, omelettes made to order and endless tea, coffee and juice were more than adequate at breakfast.
The A-La-Carte’s were easy to book. We enjoyed the Asian best of all, and although less impressed with the Italian and Mediterranean restaurants they too were enjoyable. Menus were somewhat limited, and reflect a bit of a local interpretation on the themes. Managers in both the Asian and Med restaurants made us feel particularly welcome. All in all we ate in them for ten out of the fourteen nights. We had great service from Mustapha at the Pergola Bar who always seemed to find me a beer at lunchtime. The food there was pretty good. Burgers, pizza, hot dogs, chips, kebabs etc. On the outside of the buffet area food was barbecued. I had mackerel type fish and koftas from there while sat outside at the Pergola Bar
We spent our days on the beach, which although not huge, never gave the impression of being crowded. What was really noticeable however was the scarcity of fellow Brits on the beach, particularly in our first week. The beach isn’t bad. If you are an early riser it is worth the few minutes walk to bag a place in the front row but it is not a deal breaker if you don’t manage it. In the morning there were a lot of unoccupied beds that had quite clearly been claimed with odd items like wraps, books and bottles of sun cream which was quite irritating especially as they often remained unoccupied for a number of hours. I tended to stay at our intended spot and read and wait for the towel station to open, which it did just after 8am, then have breakfast, before going back to the beach. Around the sun beds the sand is packed hard, but is softer towards the water’s edge. In the sea itself there are a number of small reef outcrops, but for the best snorkelling you must walk to the beach in front of Fort Arabesque. That said we saw a very large Moray Eel poking its head out of a hole off the SRMR beach along with the only Lionfish we saw. The beach towel crew deserve special mention for their service.
I used the sports pool on a daily basis and our daughter frequented all the others with friends she had by the second week. She particularly enjoyed the slides in the family pool. The animation was irrelevant and we didn’t do any trips, but wife and daughter had an upgraded massage each at the health spa which they enjoyed.
It was good to put faces to and meet Trip Advisor members we had been in contact with for the last few months.
There were slight negatives, and I suppose if you wanted to look at them in isolation and out of context of the whole holiday you could be quite critical. The service in the Lobby Bar was somewhat patchy at times; there were plenty of birds flying around the Round the World restaurant at breakfast time closing in on the bread which was a bit off putting. The sports pool which was right next to the Pergola Bar was increasingly littered with what appeared to be papier mache from paper napkins that must have blown in on the wind; however once I had mentioned this to customer services it was remedied almost immediately. On the subject of pools the family pool water seemed to be increasingly cloudy as the fortnight went on. We did not use this pool, but had to walk past it to our room which was how this came to our notice. Lastly “Pharoah’s Revenge” did affect both my wife and daughter, but not me. The pharmacist at Tia Heights gave them medication for it. It is important that you take all the medicine even when you return home to clear it up completely.
Looking at our time at SRMR as a whole it was brilliant holiday. Although the hotel isn’t perfect and 5* is stretching things a little, we thoroughly enjoyed our time there. As someone who was a bit sceptical about Egypt, about all-inclusive and after iffy reviews about SRMR I can’t wait for next year.

This is the best hotel and resort we have stayed at. We have stayed in many parts of the world and Makadi Bay comes top everytime.

Hotel is consistently 5 star and gets better each year. The staff, service, restaurants, bars and atmosphere are excellent. There are many different areas to sit and relax in. Pools are clean and spacious enough for a good swim.

Hotel management are friendly and helpful. This year my wife celebrated her 50th birthday, and everybody helped to make it a very special time. Just let them know what your special occasion is and they will make it special for you too.

Weather brilliant.
We will be going back.

The restaurents are just so good that you would not want to eat anywhere else. I will be returning again next August with my family !!!!

Having read a number of reviews on this site we arrived with a little trepidation which I am pleased to say turned out to be unfounded. We were given a very friendly arrival and shown to our room, which exceed expectations. It was a large with two separate sleeping areas one with twin beds and one with a large king size bed. It was well appointed and overlooked a lovely large swimming pool. The room, block and pool were all clearly new, as they do not appear on any of the maps of the hotel. It was very clean and was well serviced throughout our stay. If you wanted to be critical it was situated towards the main entrance of the hotel which meant a five minute walk to the main reception / restaurant block and about ten minutes to the beach. We did not mind though because its location meant it was quiet and we were undisturbed.

The whole hotel was clean and the staff were friendly and helpful. The main buffet style restaurant offered plenty of choice with staff cooking fresh pasta at lunch and evenings and omelettes at breakfast time. The a la carte restaurants are certainly worth visiting but the booking procedure could be improved, we only managed two visits in ten days. We found the lunches offered at the pool bar were very good with the food being cooked fresh right there, we had various fish dishes and tasty pizza’s.

We had no complaints regarding the drinks available to us on our all-inclusive package.

There were always available sun beds at the beach but they are packed very close. We spoke with guests at nearby hotel who had more room on the beach but were not always able to get a bed so I guess you can’t have it both ways. It was a little annoying that despite the requests and notices the culture exists among a number of guests of getting up at the crack of dawn to put towels on the sun beds by the pool, and then not turning up for several hours.

We did two organised trips the “Desert Safari” booked via the rep, and a day’s snorkelling trip booked at the Aqua Centre. Both were excellent and we enjoyed them immensely. We also spent half a day in Hurghada visiting a number of locations using a taxi booked at the hotel that proved to be good value (£30).

If you are interested in snorkelling then if you walk along the beach to the hotel next door (Fort Arabesque), you will find a reef about ten yards off shore where you will see lots of coloured fish.

A number of reviews refer to the rating of the hotel, and it true to say that it is not five star by English standards like the Dorchester or Ritz. But then again I never expected it to be, but it is very well appointed with excellent facilities and service.

As mentioned the English are in the minority but that was no real problem to us. You have to accept that the Russian culture is different to ours, and they don’t seem to follow he same ideas when it comes to queuing. They are happy to push straight to the front, and think nothing of it, which can be irritating to us polite Brits. The evening entertainment was poor both in terms of quality and content, but this did not spoil things for us.

The shops within the hotel we found to be expensive but the rep did say that they pay a premium to be there, so it is no real surprise. You will find better value for money by shoping in Hurghada.

All in all we had an excellent holiday and would have no concerns either returning or recommending it to others. I know people are entitled to their own opinions, which is great, and maybe we were fortunate, but we found nothing of any concern during our stay. I do wonder whether some people have either exceptionally high expectations, or maybe just like to moan.

If your experience is anything like ours you will have a great time, and a holiday to remember for a long time to come.
