“no sickness here”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 March 2009

We stayed at Fort Arabesque last week with Thomson and we were concerned about the sickness mentioned previously. We had contacted Thomson Sustomer Service prior to departure and had the assurance!! that there had been no illness reported. When we spoke to the rep in the hotel there had been 12 out of 75 families with sickness and diarrhoea with Thomson and then only 1 person the week after. SAGA has numerous guests who suffered with this. SAGA had moved all new arrivals out of the complex to other resorts. During last week there were no guests that we were aware of with any sickness/diarrhoea. This looks like a mild case of Norovirus. The hotel is very clean.
Food is adequate, although not always as hot as it should be. The drinks in the bar were basic - cocktails you pay extra for and they weren't very good. The exchange rate in the hotel was LE 7.50 to the £.
The hotel footpaths and one of the pools were undergoing maintanence, but the disruption was minimal. The SAGA wing was also having building work. The pools had windbreaks around them so the slight wind wasn't an issue. There are numerous Italians, French, Germans and British in the hotel, but not too many Russians. The usual practice of reserving sunbeds on the beach continues and there are not many left by 7.30am, however plenty of beds around the pools.
There aren't many activities around during the day except the snorkelling, windsurfing. In the evening there are two bars one with a "singer" and one with a keyboard player. The hotel animation team have a show at 21.45 each evening in the arena.
there are 2 PC's for internet connection and this costs £2 for 30 mins.
The rooms are large and clean and the service in the hotel is excellent. The variety of food and drink and the daytime activities are what let this hotel down. The grounds are beautiful.

We stayed in the same period as the other reviewers who suffered from health problems. We, 2 adults and 1 child, had no problems at all. We stayed at the new wing, did not use the dispenser at the entrance of the restaurant (washed our hands properly in our room). As far as we noticed only the English (older) customers had problems, the Italians and Germans remained healthy this week.
We loved the food, the service, and the beach and the reef were great. We will definitely come back next year!

The Fort Arabesque Hotel in Makadi Bay was an excellent choice for a family trip.
The hotel had adequate transport connections and excursion options. The atmosphere and the furnishings in the dining and bar areas were pleasant.
There was a fantastic assortment of food and drinks as well as friendly and hardworking staff.
The quality of the beach was extremely impressive and the leisure activities on offer were good.
But what we found to be an absolute plus was the extreme cleanliness of the hotel and we didn’t experience or hear anything about stomach bugs.
Needless to say we really enjoyed our holiday and will definitely return again.

We have just returned from a weeks stay at Fort Arabesque and from day one upto the present moment we are both still sufffering from the stomach virus mentioned in the previous review..This problem seems to have been present for several weeks and we were disappointed that we were not made aware of the situation by our travel company. There were lots of other guests suffering from the same problem . However , what we found most disappointing was the fact that despite the presence of this extremely virilant bug the Thomson rep was still treating the matter lightly and the company seemed to have little or no regard for there "duty of care"they owed their clients ,unlike Saga who took the decision to transfer further incoming guests to alternative accommodation. There is no doubt the two busiest people at the hotel Fort Arabesque were the doctor and the pharmacist. Needless to say this was the worst holiday we have ever experienced .

We have just returned from this hotel where we stayed for a week.

Unfortunately, we experienced two very bad stomach bugs whilst we were there. The first one appeared on our third day and cleared up after buying some 'Antinal' antibiotics from the pharmacy. I don't want to go into too much detail but both bugs were bad enough to keep us up all night visiting the toilet.

On our last day, we became ill again. Either with the same bug that hadn't been got rid of properly, or a new one. This was annoying as we had been very careful to avoid catching anything as my husband had been ill in Egypt before. We always used
antibacterial hand gel before eating and after handling the filthy Egyptian money.

There are two wings to this hotel, the old one and the new one. The old one is where we were staying (booked through Thomson). The new one seems to be for Saga holidaymakers. You can use the restaurants and bars in either wing.

The day before we came down with the first bug, we noticed that hand sanitiser dispensers had been installed at the entrance to the new wing restaurant. This raised our suspicions that there could be an illness going round, however no instructions
had been issued to guests in the old wing to use this sanitiser. We noticed that the Saga people all used it as they entered the restaurant, they had obviously been told about what was going on. We also heard that lots of the Saga guests had been
ill.

The trouble is, people from the old wing using the new wing's restaurant and vice versa would have been spreading the illness around, the hand sanitiser is pretty useless unless everybody uses it.

On the positive side, it was nice to have a bit of sun. However, the stomach bugs spoilt the holiday. We also found the food to be very dull with little choice for vegetarians (pasta with tomato sauce or pizza margherita). It was repetitive, particulary the desserts. The service also varied, it was good in the new wing, but poor in the old wing. At one meal in the old wing, our table was taken over by someone else after the waiter cleared our table whilst we were getting our food (despite that he had only just poured our drinks 5 minutes earlier). Nothing was done to resolve the situation, we were just told to sit at another table.

The so called 'fruit juice' is actually full of sugar if you read the label, and I also think that a bar in a 4 star hotel should provide glasses when you order a drink inside, not just give you a carton of 'juice' (the new wing waiters always did seem to give you a glass, it was just the old wing waiters that did this).

The airport is a joke. A visa that should have cost 15 US dollars (we looked it up before leaving on the airport website) actually cost $19 at the Thomson visa desk on arrival. We aren't sure what the extra $4 was for, but somebody appears to have a scam set up. I'd also advise trying to take some food to eat on the way back at the airport, a slice of pizza was over £4 and a sandwich over £5!

Overall, a bad experience. We feel that Egypt is a dirty, unhygienic country and will not be returning.

If you have to go to this hotel (I wouldn't recommend it but believe that this hotel is probably better than some others in Egypt), make sure you eat and drink at
the new/Saga wing.and use the hand sanitiser.

Just back from a half term sunshine break. Fabulous and exactly what we hoped for. They did not have our reservation when we arrived and with no help from the Thomson rep who just kept repeating 'you're on my list' we sorted it out ourselves and ended up with a family room - 2 adjoining rooms on ground floor which suited us all just fine. The beach was beautiful, plenty of loungers and space but don't sit in front of the 'Animation Centre' unless you like a noisy PA system. All the staff were very friendly and helpful and appreciated our attempts to learn Arabic!
The reef was amazing, from the beach we could snorkel over colourful coral and amongst loads of different fish - and we did see Nemo and his family in a very large anemone! The only problem was a chilly wind so when you came out of the water it felt very cold and warmth went out of the sun by 4pm so we found it is best to snorkel before lunch to have time to properly warm up again. Take a jumper for the evening. The heated pool helped too and the girls loved the swim up bar. The food was very good, plenty of choice and the salads and grilled fish were particularly delicious - we used the New Wing restaurant which is much more spacious. We had no tummy troubles but we did hear that half of the Saga people were very ill.
Had an amazing 2 hour horse ride, beside the bay and across the 'desert' (which is actually pretty much being prepared as a building site). Our younger daughter (horse-mad) says it was the best day of her life, cantering across the desert! A perfect week's holiday.

Have just returned from the Fort Arabesque - Top quality hotel and the staff were great. Had a standard sea view room which was great, the views across the bay are amazing. The hotels grounds are quite extensive but certainly a good place for an evening stroll. The beaches are really good and seems to go on forever. The waters are so so clear and the marine life is out of this world, so many varities of fish to see along the coral and you only have to swim out a few yards to see them. The food in the hotel was actually quite varied (which is suprising for an Egyptain All Inclusive hotel) the food wasnt HOT but it certainly wasnt cold. The variation of salads was suprising and desserts were plentiful (a little too plentiful maybe). The All ins drinks are ok, stuck with the local Sakara myself but all were served in glasses and not those stupid plastic cups that some hotels serve the drinks in, no probs with asking for more than one drink at a time either. Mini bar is stocked with Pepsi/Juice and 4 bottles of water on arrival and is replenished daily (as long as you remember to fill out the little form next to the TV (no charge for the contents of the minibar. The hotel runs a shuttle into Hurghada twice a day, first one approx 10am and returns 2 1/2 hrs later, you do have to pay 20 egyptian pound for the return, if you want a tranfer outside of the times is 200 egyption pounds. The staff are very friendly and most welcoming (apart from the reception staff) I am a single traveller and found this hotel most welcoming. I dont really have anything bad to say about the hotel, this was my 8th visit to Egypt and was certainly the best of the hotels I have stayed in. If you would like to know anymore please feel free to get in touch with me. Will certainly be paying another visit to the Fort Arabesque
