“Best Holiday Ever”
Reviewed 4 April 2010

i recently returned back from the hotel on the 2nd of April i found this holiday the most enjoyable it was more than i expected, the hotel it self was beautiful and the whole resort was well looked after by the staff, the food in the main restuarant was very enjoyable and had a good variety of foods ranging from fresh omlette and pasta made right in front of you to lovely fresh salads, the beach was gorgeous and the snorkelling was amazing well worth trying out also you wouldnt have to travel out far to notice the spectacular different fish, the arena was a good place for evening entertainment with different shows each night and got us away from the bar for an hour or so lol. The best pool is the swim up bar and it had good quick service from the bar staff, the red rocks bar was the best attended there every evening and had a nice friendly chat with the staff behind the bar Mina, Mo'men, Mohamed by the end of the night knew which drinks i was ready to have and knew exactly how we preferred them too. I went on a 4 x 4 jeep trip into the desert and did some camel riding here and then visited the Bedouin village and then finished by watching the stars through a telescope it was well worth going as i enjoyed it alot seeing the different ways outside the resort. I went to this hotel with my nan and we both thought it was suited for both generations there was a lot for me to do as a 17 year old girl and my nan was more than happy with the hotel. i would definately recommend this hotel and am hoping to return soon :)

Just returned last night after a weeks stay. Went with Thomas Cook rep very helpful and friendly.

Room

Standard good beds stayed in old block told Saga is better. Rooms clean, mini bar stocked free with soft drinks, room man on the ball and helpful (tips of course lol).

Bars

Not as many as expected in such a large resort. Service slow to stop in Lobby, bit quicker in Red Rocks, great at swim up bar, ask for a fresh orange and rum, lovely. All internationals available at extra cost, found vodka and rum on local stuff ok. Beer a bit gassy, so didnt bother. Told wines are ok.

Food

Some days good, others not good at all, always something to eat with salads though, and a fresh pasta bar, cooked to order very good. Service here good and fast though.
Beach bar plenty drinks in coolers to help yourself but only bready type snacks and buns, no food otherwise. Buffet style in main restaurant.

Beach

Best bit of this hotel, great snorkelling within a few metres from beach, direct access, best beach in Makadi Bay. Lots sunbeds at all times we were there and hotel was full.

Pools

3 heated, main pool has swim up bar and plenty sun beds, Saga block and protected pool also heated. Couple of river type pools not heated and one small childrens pool but this was sited under a wall from main pool and it really looked like an accident waiting to happen if someone fell off wall onto children.

Gardens beautiful and extensive.

Area around desert and only few overpriced hotel shops.

Honest review, we have had much better! Will not be returning.

Recently returned from this hotel after a two week stay. As people have said on the forum, when you arrive inside the airport ignore the reps desks and head straight on and slightly right to the bank desks to buy your visa. There are no queues and it is cheaper!
When we arrived at the hotel, we were a bit disappointed to find that we had been allocated rooms on the ground floor in the old block as we had requested rooms not on the ground floor. We are now pleased that we had the rooms that we did as each room had its own terrace and garden which was very pleasant to sit in if you didn't want to rush down to the beach. They also get the afternoon sun. You can also watch the kestrels and falcons out hunting and going from balcony light to light looking for lizards. The rooms were obviously old but very large and during our stay kept very clean by Mohammed. The rooms have a two double beds, safety box, tv and fridge which is restocked on a daily basis. The shower was excellent with good pressure and very hot water.
The grounds and gardens at this hotel are very well kept with gardeners working and watering all day and most of the evening. They use a fogging machine in the early evening to keep down the insects but be advised to use repellent as we still got a few bites! The beach is by far the best in Makadi Bay, quite wide and very long. There were always sun beds and big sun shades available with enough room between them to allow you to drag your bed out to follow either the shade or the sun. We walked through to the next couple of hotels and their beaches were very cramped with no room to move. You can walk straight into the water without beach shoes at a few places along the beach, so why do some people still like the agony of stumbling over the rocks? The snorkeling off the beach is superb with excellent hard corals and a large variety of fish. We went on the glass bottom boat trip which takes you to an offshore reef and did not see as many species as we did from the beach.
The food in the hotel was very good with enough variety for most guests. The food is maybe slightly biased towards the Italian guests who are in the majority. There were normally a couple of potato choices with the meals. If you can't live without chips for a couple of weeks, tough! If you really can't, there are chips available everyday at the beach bar in the afternoon. You can use either the main restaurant in the main building or the one in the new(SAGA) block. The food is the same in both. Personally, we thought that the bar in the new block was better for an after dinner drink than the old bar. The Windbreaker beach bar at the righthand end of the beach is normally pretty quiet and a great spot to sit and enjoy a daytime drink or two. Both of the beach bars have self-service fridges for beers, sodas juices and ice creams. There are no problems with our Russian friends as this hotel does not deal with Russia travel agents. During our stay there were only 12 Russians in the hotel who had booked independently. On the whole the staff were very friendly although service could be slow at times.
We booked an overnight trip to Luxor with Simon, the excellent Thomas Cook rep. This was great value at £99 including a room overlooking the Nile. We also booked a dawn hot air balloon flight which was cancelled due to high winds, a big diappointment. Fortunately, we were in Luxor as these were the winds that caused problems in Makadi bay as in the previous review.
The animation team were quite busy but not pushy. Again biased towards the Italians who seem to like being organised and participating more than the Brits. Some of the evening entertainment was pretty dire but then I didn't expect Broadway.
The all inclusive lasts until you leave the hotel not until the midday check-out.
All in all this Hotel and Holiday was very good value and I would have no hesitation in recommending it to anybody.

Having found this hotel in October whilst staying at another hotel in Makadi Bay we were not disappointed with our stay. The staff were always very friendly and helpful especially Mina in the bar who always knew what we were drinking and when we needed a refill. During our first week we experienced a sand storm which left the pools filled with sand but thanks to the hard work of the staff it only took two days before they could be used again. This hotel has by far the best beach in Makadi Bay and the snorkeling is second to none. Will we go back? Yes hopefully next March.

This Hotel has by far the best beach on the bay, in fact we laughed when we had a look at the hotel next door as it was so bad in comparison. There is plenty of room and at whatever time of the day you get up you will always find a spot. They keep the sand clean and relatively free of grit sharp stones. The shades are large enough to cover two or three persons.

The rooms are adequate, we upgraded at the hotel for 10 Euros a day (for the room not PP.) We were in room 450 and the view was smashing.

The bars were okay but cocktails were not included in AI. So the choice was limited, however the bar staff were great fun.

In fact apart from one guy at reception who could not help us at one point, and did not have the interpersonal skills to put it over very well, all the staff were either good or very good.

FOOD--- what do you expect really? It was hot buffet food with a good variety, it was not all great quality but get dug in. My only point to the management was that the fruit choices could have had more imagination.

ENTERTAINMENT-- Mostly rubbish with a few exceptions including Kenyan dancers, Brazilian night and the Wurling Dervisher on oriental night. The animation team are paid for by the Italian tour company so do not be upset if they ignore you.

The hotel was mostly Italians and Germans all fitting in nicely with their allo allo stereotypes, I preferred to sit near the Italians both on the beach and at dinner as some of the Germans had absolutely no manners and would reserve the sun beds around them but not use them to give themselves extra space, push past people to get to the food ETC.

Two special mentions, the Thomas Cook rep Simon who gets 11/10, even the rep from the next hotel Denise made sure that we were okay when we saw her.
Some people we met who traveled with Thompsons said that our rep spoke to them more than theirs did.

And the guys at Speed devils beach buggies 002010 8446855 or via your rep. This was a great half day out in the desert.

My husband and I spent 2 weeks at the Fort Arabesque in February and what a welcome break it was from our dismal winter in the U.K.!

We travelled with Saga and they looked after us very well (we areat the younger end of the Saga age group) - the 2 Saga reps were very friendly and efficient - thank you Pammy and Sandy. Saga use the new wing of the hotel - our room was excellent with a wonderful sea view. On the entertainment side, the singer in the Sunset Bar was very repetitive but he added a bit of humour to our holiday. We particularly enjoyed the Kenyan acrobats in the main arena.

We tended to use the smaller swimming pool, which was always very quiet. The beach was fantastic and we never had a problem getting sunbeds/shades - yes, some of them were taken very early in the morning, but good luck to those people who are happy to get up at 6.00 a.m. - we certainly didn't find it necessary. All the sunbeds on the beach were nicely spaced apart, and an ice cream from the beach bar in the afternoon was an extra treat.

The snorkelling was superb and thank you Barbara (the amazing 80 year old who was guardian of the beach) for pursuading me to get up early and go snorkelling with you - it was one of the highlights of my holiday. I do hope they look after their reef, it certainly is a big asset at the moment ( they could do with employing Barbara full time!)

We mainly eat in the Saga restaurant - I wouldn't say it was haute cuisine, but it was passable (a bit canteeny) and probably what we'd expect of an all inclusive buffet style at this level of hotel There was always plenty of choice - the salads, fruit, bread and puddings were very good. Waiter service for drinks, etc. at the tables was friendly and efficient. I didn't have any tummy problems but my husband did - all I can say is he had ice in his drinks and I did not. At lunchtime we went down to the beachbar at the main end of the hotel and paid for our lunch - portions were good enough to have one meal between the two of us - it was not expensive and made for a really nice change of scenery. Probably, the one thing we would say is it would be nice on occasions to have the choice of going to an a la carte restaurant in the evening and paying extra for it.

We had perfect weather - lower 30s in daytime and 18 at night but I understand this was a bit warmer than it usually is at this time of the year. I had one or two problems with mosquito bites and would recommend taking repellent if these pests like to feed on you!

The hotel staff at the Saga wing were very friendly and efficient. All in all, we had a most enjoyable holiday and yes, we would return.

Just got back from a stay at the Hotel. Good reception, shown to the room which was clean but sea view was blocked by a great big tree.

Beautiful gardens, lovely walks by the sea with a gorgeous beach and even better snorkelling with a myriad of coloured fish to see on the reefs.

But what about the food? It was the worst I have ever experienced at any hotel that I have stayed in all around the world! Poor ingredients, cooked to death and inedible! Great platefuls beings sent back by all types of people and complaints from other guests regarding a sad lack of choice at all mealtimes. They say there is a beach grill, with a la carte, but it's only available 2 hours a day from 3:30 in the afternoon! They are I understand going to build another to blocks onto the hotel, but I would suggest that before they do so, that they send their catering staff to cookery school and fire the Chef, who is totally inept.

What a shame, great hotel and surroundings with awful catering.
