From the moment we arrived at Makadi Palace we were smitten. Beautiful buildings, pools and landscaping. Heat was a tad too much at first but, we soon became acclimatised. Plenty of food choice but, did need to book nice and quick for some of the a la carte restaurants. All the waiters and bar staff were friendly and efficient. The whole resort is enormous. We had a Junior suite with lovely sea views from the balcony, We would recommend this resort and this hotel in a heart beat. Great evening entertainment and drinks on tap. Top class service. Internet connection was a bit iffy but, who wants to spend their time on the internet on holiday?!! Would also recommend the quad biking for a slightly speed fuelled experience for the younger generation.! camel ride and visit to bedouin village.

Room Tip: rooms 3340 /41 on 2nd level were nice and quiet and had great views

I've just returned from a very relaxing week at Makadi Palace with my husband and 2 kids aged 8 and 10. After reading so many reviews here prior to travelling, we weren't expecting a true 5 star experience as we in no way paid a 5 star price, but we were still pleasantly surprised when we arrived. Here's an admittedly lengthy review of what we thought...

Hotel in general
We were impressed by the architecture, poolside landscaping and beachfront location. It's just beautiful, especially at night. On closer inspection, the pools do need some attention with some loose tiles and wear and tear. The hotel did seem to be making improvements during our stay with parasols and loungers being replaced and lots of painting. It was good to see but it's a little off putting sunbathing next to somebody painting lamps! It is also worth noting that the outside area is VERY dark at night. We had to use the torches on our phones to get around, especially towards the beach area which does seem to be populated by frogs at night.

Room
Once we found it (we struggled to read our hotel map due to the very limited lighting outside), the room was a good size and nicely presented. We were delighted with the massive outdoor terrace complete with 2 chairs and 2 sun loungers. The beds are indeed huge and very comfortable although the linen has long passed the time it should have been replaced, yet it was perfectly clean. There were a few issues with the number of pillows & towels but these were resolved promptly by Housekeeping. The kids were delighted to find Fox Movies on the TV which kept us nicely occupied during some down time. The bathrooms and bath linen need some updating but we had no issues with water pressure or plumbing.

Housekeeping
I wanted to give a special mention to Mohammed who looked after our room. When he realised from the balloons we'd put up that it was our daughter's birthday he went above & beyond with the towel art and even returned to put up tinsel in the room! I have no doubt he was eager to please so that we would tip generously, but it was greatly appreciated by my daughter who was over the moon.

Food / Restaurants
There's no denying that the hotel primarily caters to its Russian and German guests. We ate at Discovery buffet for the first two meals but weren't very impressed with the choice or standard of food or facilities so we ate at the Dome for all other breakfast and lunch times. We all found something we liked. The menu didn't change much during the week but we were just grateful there was something we could eat so we weren't too bothered!
We also ate at the hotel's a-la-carte restaurants and the 'Mall' opposite the hotel. We found the food and service to be good in all of them, although the Thai restaurant denied there was a kids menu option, which we'd been told was available in all restaurants. We had no issues with booking in advance - generally one day's notice was sufficient. Special mention goes to the staff at Leonardo's Italian in the Grand Makadi next door for the birthday cake they presented to our daughter and the wonderful rendition of Happy Birthday in Egyptian! We found the table linen and crockery in dire need of being replaced (especially in the Thai restaurant). It didn't detract from the food but it did take the shine off the overall experience.

Service
Service was inconsistent throughout the hotel. We'd read that tipping was expected, so went armed with a bag full of £1 coins. In the first few days we tipped everyone for everything but found that for some waiters (Terrace bar), this made no difference whatsoever - they were surly no matter what. In the end we only tipped for good service which is how it should be. We had a wonderful waiter in the Dome restaurant who really worked hard to look after us. He saved a table for us for each meal time and replaced our drinks almost as soon as we'd put down the empty glass. He was very good with the kids, who became quite attached to him! Pool service was erratic and not often enough in my opinion. Some waiters regularly served us, but others spent their time wandering around poolside, watching people enjoying themselves. The drinks, when they did arrive, were served in very small plastic cups - two sips and the drink was gone. We didn't have enough coins to tip every time we were served so ended up going to the bar ourselves.

Pools
The pool area is the largest and best designed we've come across so it never felt busy, even with the hotel at full capacity. There were plenty of sunbeds and parasols which were well spaced out. There was no need to reserve beds with towels (which were provided by the hotel along with a beach bag), however the popular areas were reserved from around 7am. We did find a spot we liked, so set the alarm each day to make sure we weren't disappointed! The pools weren't very deep so no diving in was allowed and by the end of the holiday our kids did get a little bored and commented that the odd slide would have made the holiday more fun.

Beach & Reef
The hotel is located on the beach front. This area was never busy when we visited to snorkel. There are plenty of beds with attractive parasols and wind breaks. The snorkelling was amazing! We stayed within the area immediately outside the hotel and saw a wonderful assortment of coloured fish. Others we met ventured near the jetty and were lucky enough to see a turtle and stingray. We're all very envious about that! Pool shoes are a must as you need to walk out quite a way over the reef.

WiFi
The hotel does have WiFi in the lobby but we found it impossible to get decent service unless we were in the lobby at around 7am.

Illness
I mention this as it's come up in previous reviews. Luckily, none of us was ill during our stay. We were very careful and didn't have any ice in our drinks, or any ice cream, cut fruit or salad. We also sanitised our hands before and after our meals, and every time we used egyptian currency or shook hands. It was a lot to keep in mind and seemed a chore at first but it was soon second nature and I'm grateful if it stopped us becoming ill.

In summary, despite the niggles and the tired decor and facilities, we did enjoy our holiday. I don't have low standards - I simply believe you get what you pay for and so I wasn't expecting a stay at the Four Seasons. With that said, the hotel should not be advertising itself as a 5 star establishment in its current state. Red Sea Hotels needs to up the investment in this hotel for it to justify its 5 star rating.

Staff are all fantastic, beach and hotel pools fab and relaxing. Egypt is a great place to get a tan and indulge in some R&R. Food and room very disapponting, but they did try hard. Being a complete foodie and being lucky enough to experience luxury fine dining the restaurants at hotel just did not compare or emulate a full experience. Overall value for money but dont expect 5star

Went to the makadi palace on a recommendation. Where to start, Room: Was very tired, bed linen dirty, bath towels worn beyond there years plus the whole bathroom was poor, no water pressure for the shower, smell through out the stay in toilet. Good point towel art was great. Food: Both of the buffett restaurants were poor quality and choice, lots of flies on food, nothing covered to prevent this!
Pools: The pools looked very good but had tiles missing on the bottom, both my wife and daughter cut their feet in the bottom pool. Watch out!
Staff: Most staff were fine but all were tip orientated which was a shame as this is supposed to be 5*.
This hotel should not be classed as 5* more like 3* at best.
Snorkeling: This was the most outstanding part of the holiday, but maybe because the hotel has no part in that. I thought all inclusive was what it said but sadly not, anything that looked good you needed to pay for. This is a honest review, those that say it's great must have very low standards. Makadi palace I urge you to think about all that is being said gets taken in to account and gets sorted or you will surely loose business to your better competitors. Please anyone booking please take into account all that has been said on the poor reviews as it is unfortunately all true.

Just returned from a weeks holiday at Makadi Palace Hurghada

Good points -
* nicely landscaped with plenty of pools and shady areas to sit
* although 40 degrees it is a dry heat with a lovely warm breeze
* able to snorkel directly from the beach or jetty and really do see some beautiful fish

Bad points -
* food very poor. Three out of our family of 5 had upset stomachs during the holiday & I've been unable to return to work today as my son is still ill with sickness & diarrhoea.
* this really isn't a 5 star hotel compared to others we've stayed at in Europe. Shabby decor & in need of an update
* we paid for an 'all inclusive' holiday & understood that there were a selection of restaurants you could go to in the evening. However we found that certain drinks were extra during the day (for some strange reason you had to pay for drinks in the hotel foyer) & the restaurants which you need to book charged for the majority of items and only very basic dishes were AI.
* although we were told you could only book the restaurants 24 hours ahead we found that some were booked up 4 or 5 days ahead - a problem when you are only there for a week. The ones we did manage to book ( Egyptian, Thai, Italian & Indian were pretty mediocre)
* I couldn't say ALL the staff were rude but they did expect tips for everything & it certainly seemed to improve service if you placed a note on the table as soon as you sat down
* everything seemed to be about saving money and giving away as little as possible. Bottled water was available in some areas but many of the pool /beach side bars served them in tiny plastic cups which was a false economy in such a hot climate as you ended up going back for more
* there is a Water Park in the hotel next door which is 10/5 euros for adults/children but even though it seemed reasonably priced compared to the one our Rep advertised, it was pretty lame & many of the features (wave pool and surf pool) were closed

Conclusion - I'm fairly relaxed & don't expect any holiday to be perfect (& this is the first time I've ever felt the need to review/warn people about a hotel) however for me the poor food (& resulting stomach problems) would be the main reason not to recommend this hotel.

Second visit here, first being five years ago. Definitely gone down hill since then. First day the shower over the brown stained bath came off. Reported this to front desk and was told they would send an engineer to fix it. Two days later someone did fix it back on the wall but then the water stopped in the bathroom for about an hour. Bed linen was blood stained in places, only realised this after having slept in it!, my sons bed had a cockroach in it on the first night. The food was ok but we all had upset stomachs at some point had to see the pharmacist to pay 20EP for medicine which worked. (we had to do this five years ago also). The waiters were usually helpful but the desk staff and cleaners need retraining at best. My husband sent two shirts to be laundered and paid extra for same day service. By the morning of the next day when the shirts still hadn't appeared we spoke to the desk manager and he assured us he would bring them to our room himself. Four phone calls to the desk and interrogating the cleaner who collected them we still had no luck By 4.45pm (we were checking out at 5.15pm) there was a knock at the door and we were presented with two badly folded shirts. (We were still expected to pay for the express service and tip!) The free WI-FI in the lobby was fine if you wanted to use it before 7am but usually unavailable any other time. This hotel seemed to be mostly populated by German guests which the staff seemed to prefer. The reefs are amazing, the weather was perfect but this hotel is certainly no longer 5*. Unfortunately these reviews don't seem to matter as I notice all previous reviews are just answered by a generic reply from the hotel.
