“Excellent holiday for the price”

Enjoyed my stay here. Rooms are a little dated but clean and all the staff were friendly. Stunning location, nice pools and relaxing beach area. We stayed a week between 15th 22nd may and had no trouble getting sunbeds though I did get up early a couple of times for a better spot by the pool. Shame the infinity pool was not open as would of enjoyed the views whilst swimming. Food was okay no more than you would expect for what you pay, cliff restaurant at lunchtime was our favourite. Went to Soho square not impressed as I am more cultural traveller enjoyed Nama bay more, you do get hassled a little but in no way threatening unlike other countries I have visited. Went to the old town where hassling was more intense but never did I feel intimidated or scared. I loved Egypt was my first time and will definitely go back which is unlike me as I never visit the same place twice. I would definitely stay at this hotel again as was worth every penny we payed.

We have just returned from the Grand and overall the hotel is excellent. Good points first
The staff are friendly and professional. They do survive on tips, and if you are good to them they are good to you. I'd especially like to single out our pool attendant Adil as a shining example. Management if you're reading he deserves a pay rise.
The food in the a la carte restaurants was to a very high standard, my only criticism is that in other all inclusive hotels the items you pay for are a token price. Why would i want to pay 14 euro for a steak?
Standard of cleanliness in the communal areas was excellent.

Now for the negatives, worst first. The standard of hygiene in the buffet restaurant was really bad, mainly because of other guests who thought it was acceptable to touch food, sniff it and put it back... everyone we met who had eaten in the buffet had fallen ill the next day. Staff need to be more vigilant for this.
Our room airconditioning was REALLY loud and leaving it off was not an option because of the noise.
Plumbing in the room, smell of stagnant water from the drains that wouldn't go away.
The rooms in general need refurbishment.
Sunbeds, the hotel has an unenforced policy that states sunbeds cannot be reserved before 7am and cannot be left for longer than 2 hours. Please enforce this rule, we would see sunbeds left unused but reserved for hours on end with other guest looking for somewhere to sit.
Finally, water. Please make it easier to get bottled water, having to walk all the way to the buffet restaurant for a bottle is ridiculous considering the heat and the water from the coolers was horrible.
Please dont be disheartened by my comments, we are planning to return but the above are all things that need to be rectified.

Dear Steve-thank you for your review. Your positive comments are highly appreciated and please rest assured that we will certainly act on your feedback.

Firstly, may I take this opportunity to confirm the situation regarding water bottles. Prior to guest arrival, we place a 1.5 litre bottle in each guest room. Every two days thereafter, we replenish the water bottle. In the meantime, water by the bottle is readily available in several outlets with 24 hour/7 day coverage. Water is also available in other areas from drinks dispensers.

The subject of sunbeds is interesting as it is not a case of not enough sunbeds,it is down to choice of location most of the time. We have enough sunbeds to cover the total capacity of the hotel. If a guest is willing to consider other locations within the property, there will always be a sunbed available and our recreation staff are always willing to help find a suitable location. We advise all guests on arrival in writing and at their welcome meeting not to reserve sunbeds before 0700 and advise that we reserve the right to reclaim beds that have not been occupied for two hours.

We are delighted to learn that you will consider returning and therefore look forward to welcomming you and your family.

Sincerely

The Grand Hotel-Sharm El Sheikh

We cannot fault the hotel overall however, there are facilities that require maintenance / refurbishment and the furniture etc requires updating. The service was excellent and the staff very pleasant and helpful. The hotel management are aware of this and I believe changes are being phased in. Sameh who is the customer relations manager at the hotel deserves special praise, very friendly and super efficient.
It is true to say that the sunbed rules are not enforced and this leads to all out war. Be afraid!

Room Tip: Upgrade to Junior Suite as the standard rooms are on the small side.

This is a good/very good hotel/resort. It is a large hotel with plenty of excellent swimming pools plus some very good snorkeling off the pier. The complex is made up of a large number of blocks, each block has about 12 rooms, six on the ground and six upstairs. The rooms are showing signs of age but for size and furniture they have is more than adequate, they even have hairdryers, (which my wife always wants to know). Also they have all the towels required including beach towels. The staff for the rooms were excellent, in fact all of the staff were so friendly and worked really hard. There were a number of pools including ones for small children and slightly older ones with a "beach". These pools were never crowded and all had plenty of sun-loungers. The pools are all various shapes which make them more interesting. The only problem being that to get a place at a pool you liked meant getting up before 6am to put down your towels! The beach is large with plenty of sun umbrellas and sun loungers. The jetty was reasonably easy to get in and out of, but the snorkeling is very, very good and was one of the high spots of the holiday. The food though was only average. The resort has two main buffet style restaurants, both serving similar food. The choice was varied for choice but a little repetitive daily, although there always was something acceptable, just a pity about the awful music at breakfast and lunchtimes! The hotel does have a number of smaller restaurants which are bookable a day in advance, but these were quickly booked up, meaning that someone had to be there at 10am to make a reservation for the next day, a bit of a pain if you are on the beach and have to walk 5 minutes back to reception. Of these other restaurants we enjoyed the Mexican (Fajitas), The Olive (mainly Mediterranean) and the Beach restaurant (Caribbean) although not very spicy. The Fusion was ok but our steaks were all under-cooked.
We chose this hotel as it looked good and the price was very reasonable. And overall I believe that was just what we got: a good hotel at an excellent price.

This hotel has so much potential, but it does not live up to it!
Like the other reviews have state the reception on arrival is grand and you would be forgiven for thinking that this was a luxury 5 star hotel and that this would continue through out.. unfortunately not the case.

I agree that the rooms are tired and that the drinks are watered down and unattractive ( I ordered a cocktail and received a gin and warm sprite in a dirty cup!) Entertainment is boring and poor.

No food between 11am and 12,30pm- so if you are hungry then its litterally tough! Really misses a snack bar for these times and for an informal style lunch too ( Lunch is only at resturants, no light snacks to eat whilst around the pool!)

My 2 main issues with this hotel are as follows;

PAYING FOR EXTRA’S!

I have NEVER been all inclusive and paid for so many extra’s.. want drinks in your room fridge or Tea and Coffee? = Extra cost. Want a drink in the lovely cool reception Bar + Extra Charge ( even though the drinks are the same as the bar 2 minutes away! Want fresh orange Juice with breakfast in the restaurant rather than squash + Extra Charge! Want to go to a party on the beach = Extra Charge. Want to visit all the a la carte restaurants= you will have to pay for some ( some not included at all and some you have to pay for drinks which are expensive -£6 for a glass of wine. Want to visit the onsite internet café or sports bar to watch a game = Extra charge ( No drinks included here at all and menu is expensive!)….. I could go on but you get the idea. Yes you can choose not to visit this extra charge places but believe me when you are sick of the long ques and bad drinks service you end up here paying through the nose!

This hotel would be so much better if all ( or even the majority of this) was included. Certainly NOT all inclusive as I know it and certainly not 5 star.

ITS NOT FINSHED!
There are 2 pools not open/ finished- One a beautiful infinity pool which would have been lovely, and another pool area by this is a building site and unfinished and doesn’t look like being finished anytime soon! This only add’s to the sunbed wars as the other pools are crowded. Like the other reviewers have said- be up at 7am or you have no chance!! Especially on the beach
Around the massive complex and especially at the front of the hotel are a number of boarded up shops- it looks like this hotel should have had a large range of shops and more restaurants and then work just stopped!... such a shame as it could be so much more!

Few tips- Don’t get your tours from the hotel. Walk down the road and there are 2 other travel companies which charge MUCH less. The Hotel wanted £180pp for a day trip by air to Luxor- we paid £100 each with the guys down the road. We also saved on the boat trip ( which I highly recommend)

Likewise the hotel taxi is a rip off- walk outside and get a local taxi for 1/3 of the price – also the driver is likely to give you his mobile number and he would be your personal taxi for your holiday. For instance with our guy- we would drop call him 20 minutes before we wanted to go anywhere or come back and he would pick us up outside the hotel gates or an arranged place, always took his payment on the return journey back from wherever we went so we knew he was coming to get us – great service and cheap!

I also recommend Soho square- a classy and hazel free night out which has a great range of entertainment, shops and restaurants.

Email the hotel in advance- we where celebrating so I emailed the hotel and asked for a sea view- and we got one.. so cant knock them for this at all!

In a nutshell I would not return unless this hotel looked at the above issues and improved. Spoke to the hotel manager who is very aware that the hotel can be better as he admitted as much – so let hope he does something about it.

We appreciate constructive feedback and will act upon some of the points raised, however we would like to clarify the position on a number of points this reviewer has raised.

We have several outlets within the hotel serving snacks (included in the all inclusive) that can be taken to the poolside or beach:-
Pannini - serving fresh toasted pannini sandwiches.
Crepe and Sweet - serving waffles and crepes, ice creams and cakes.
Pool Grill- Cliffe, and Relax Bars - all serving burgers and other hot snacks.
Beach Restaurant - Fresh Pizzas, Salads and other hot and cold snacks.

Local alcoholic and soft drinks are included in the All Inclusive package and are available in all outlets with the exception of the Mumbai Restaurant and Suntimes Cafe as these two facilities are not owned by the hotel. Entry to watch football and sporting events in Suntimes is free of charge.

We hope this clarifies the situation.

Sincerely

The Grand Hotel-Sharm El Sheikh

We read many reviews on Tripadvisor before booking the Grand Hotel and were looking forward to our stay - we even "Upgraded" to a Junior Suite on advice from other travellers. On arrival at about 2130 we were quickly shepherded to the Main Buffet Restaurant for the leftover food before being allowed to check in. We then had to wait for everyone else and were guided to our rooms in the dark ( another powercut) with the lights coming from our mobile phones. We were right down the bottom of the complex so a lot of unnecessary waiting around only to get to our room in total darkness ! We had to wait for about 30 minutes for our bags to be delivered and for the lights to come on! We had paid extra for a Junior Suite and had requested a 1st floor room over looking the sea if possible - fat chance - we had a large room with separate en suite overlooking the rooms behind us. When we complained at the reception we were told that we couldn't be moved for another 3 days. When we did enquire on the day this wasn't until late in the evening and several blocks away so we stayed put. Really not satisfactory when you have paid up to £200 more for a "Suite" . The Hotel grounds are lovely and very well maintained as are the pools but agree with everyone else - if you are not up by 0700 you will not find a spare bed by the beach or pools - a big problem with people getting up early and putting some towels by the pool, more on the beach and even the double beds by the park areas ! This mean't a lot of reserved but empty beds every day!
We had our meals in the A La Carte restaurants most nights; the Oriental Evening on wednesday was good fun ( 25 Euros each) , Fusion was great as was the Mumbai ( had to pay for the drinks but they were very cold and really good value ) and the Cliff Bar for Prawns and Lobster ( again not All Inclusive) was really good. Cliff Bar was great for lunch and had excellent bar and waiting staff.
Huge problem with Mosquito's - had to have our room fumigated and then the whole block as so many in our room and bathroom. So many people badly bitten and infected that the Chemist on the Hotel Site must be making a fortune !
Towels are picked up early so no morning shower unless you hold on to them - Beach Towels the same.
Rooms kept very clean - lovely towel arrangements by your Room Boys - and they even came to spray the room when we had so many problems with the mosquitos.

The 5* Rating is the Egyptian equivalent of perhaps a 3* in Europe but for a basic All Inclusive Holiday in Egypt would still represent good value for money overall.
So, although the holiday was initially a bargain ( until we paid the Junior Suite Supplement with Red Sea Holidays), we will try elsewhere next time.

P.S - It will be interesting to see a reply from the Hotel because as other travellers have already complained about exactly the same things both at the Hotel and on Tripadvisor, nothing seems to be changing.

Room Tip: If you pay extra for a Junior Suite ensure that is what you get on arrival.

This is our 2nd visit this year and 3rd visit to this hotel.

We have stayed in many hotels in Egypt and feel this is the best. The choice of A la Cartes are good and even though there is an extra charge for certain things on the menu it is nominal. This hotel is excellent value for money. We did have a problem with warm drinks, but that is because it is so hot and the staff cannot keep up with chilling the drinks. Maybe bigger fridges would be an idea. We had to get up at the crack of dawn to get a sunbed but to be truthful, the mornings were so beautiful that we were actually pleased we did. We would get our beds and sit and read and then go to breakfast between 8 and 9. So we got the best of the day. Yes the rooms are a bit tired but they are clean. The grounds are really lovely and quite lush for Egypt. Yes there is hills and slopes all over the hotel but it is the same in most hotels in this area. Besides all that lazing around, a little exercise is good. As always Mike (the manager) was always around and trying his hardest to make sure everyone was happy. Hopefully we will be back later in the year or early next year with more friends.
