We have just got back from a week's stay at The Grand. It was my first time in Egypt and all my apprehensions were completely unfounded. I had been in touch with Leny (Guest Relations) prior to our stay via Facebook and had emailed her too. We also spoke to Sha, Hanna and Holly during our stay. Sha was extremely friendly and helpful and would walk around the hotel checking on guests and sitting and chatting to them. She sat with us and chatted for ages by the pool. Any problems at all, just please see Sha.

We arrived around 9.30 in the evening and were shown through to a room where food was served. It wasn't the best food, but to be honest what was on offer was enough at that time of night having both eaten on the flight over. Staff were friendly.

Our bags were unloaded from the coach and taken to just inside hotel foyer where the concierge staff looked after them whilst we checked in. This was very speedy and once done we gave luggage tags to the concierge who said our bags would be taken to our room. We were taken to our room and our bags swiftly followed. Great service.

We were in Block 34 (room 724). It is at the end of the block on the highest level with a view of the gardens and the red sea – it was perfect. It is a refurbished room which was lovely and clean, well maintained and had a huge and most comfortable bed. Towels and bedding were changed daily and the chap who cleaned our room was extremely friendly and left us different towel creations every day. Block 34 is ideally located too. Close to the Relax Pools and the beach and (if want to count the steps as some reviewers do) only about 40 steps to the main hotel. Only a couple of minutes to each. But as the hotel is built on the cliff side and is on different levels, steps are inevitable. There is a safe in the room for all your personal belongings.

The main buffet restaurant was good for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We ate here every breakfast and lunch and 5 evenings out of 7 and could always find something good to eat. All food was hot and cooked properly and cooked to order (i.e. pancakes, omelettes, eggs, flatbreads). Great choice of pastries and cakes too. The waiting staff are great and bring drinks to you and always remembered what we liked to drink. There was a good choice at all 3 sittings, and we always got seated promptly.

We only went to 1 of the al a carte restaurants (Fusion) which was very good. Waiter service was lovely after using the buffet. The staff were very attentive. Not everything is included in the all inclusive, but there is enough choice of what is included. And having to book the day before for the al a carte restaurants really isn't a problem. You can book from 9.30am in the morning and the two times I did it, it took seconds. I can't see what there is to moan about this.

The grounds of the hotel are beautiful and well maintained. The pools are clean and inviting. You are given a towel card on arrival and this is exchanged daily for a fresh towel. Yes some of the towels are old looking and faded, but they are clean. And if you had to bring your own beach/pool towel you would be using the same one for the week – here you get a fresh one every day. Saying that every day we got a gorgeous fluffy new towel each. So we had no complaints. There was no problem getting a sunbed every day. In fact we had the same spot at one of the relax pools the whole week. The pool staff are great making sure you drink regularly and frequently walk around bringing drinks to you. The drinks were always cold and refreshing.

We knew that wifi was only available in the hotel lobby which for us wasn't a problem. We were on holiday so being tied to our phones wasn't high on our list! Connecting to the wifi was a little hit and miss depending on how many people were in the lobby at one time. But we managed a couple of facebook posts. Texting home wasn't a problem and all our texts went through as normal.

All the staff speak English – some better than others, but we encountered no problems talking to the staff. Everyone was friendly and would always say hello when passing.

I had read about the Terrace bar being noisy and I didn't think we would drink in here, but we spent every night here and after meeting Tawfek on our first night, he looked after us expertly for the whole of our holiday, bringing us drinks and knowing what we liked. He even made sure he said goodbye to us before we left. English music (mainly 80's) plays here in the evening and at 9.30pm a singer comes on. It made for a pleasant evening.

We made friends with the Shisha Man, Yassim – he was very funny and attentive when we wanted a shisha.

Bottled water is readily available at all the bars. You have a fridge in your room, so just make sure you keep topped up with water and you will have no complaints. It is impossible for the hotel to keep every bottle of water cold, so as soon as you get it go and put it in your fridge. Don't complain that the water isn't cold. I would imagine they get through a good few thousand bottles of water daily.

The hotel has its own jetty into the sea. Snorkelling here is totally amazing and a must if you stay here. The beds by the beach are very tired and definitely in need of replacing, but in that heat I would imagine they degrade quickly so replacing them frequently probably isn't possible. But quite a few of the beds were used so this could be something that the hotel could fix quickly.

I had read problems with Russian guests. There were a few at the hotel when we stayed, and generally they are rude, but didn't cause us any problems and they didn't exhibit any bad offensive behaviour as reported in some reviews. Sha advised us that when we stayed, over half the hotel was occupied by the British and half by other nationalities. All the guests that sat by the relax pool where we sat every day were English.

We used the hotel taxi service to go to Naama Bay one evening. The service was excellent. Mina was very efficient and made sure we got a taxi there and back. We were dropped off and after advising what time we wanted picking up, the driver was there on time and made sure we got to the taxi safely. An absolutely superb service. Would definitely recommend.

On our last day we had to check out at 4.20. We left our cases outside our room and they were collected and taken to the hotel foyer. Checkout was completed in a matter of seconds and was extremely efficient. Automatic late check out was fantastic and meant we could still have a full day by the pool/beach.

Neither of us were ill during our week away and we didn't get bitten by mozzis either. We used Jungle spray from home and Avon's dry oil body spray.

You have a beautiful hotel with great staff, grounds, view etc etc. Please get all the rooms renovated as quickly as possible to stop all the negative reviews. I agree that some parts of the hotel are looking tired, but gardeners and painters were working everyday whilst we were there. So constant maintenance happens there, but they are Egyptian and don't work as fast (in that heat) as we expect in Britain. The fact that some maintenance is required, it will not affect your holiday.

We are planning on going back October 2015 and I will be in touch with Sha with my requests beforehand.

Thank you for a great holiday.

Room Tip: Block 34 is great as are the junior suite blocks overlooking the pools. Just email the guest relations team prior to your holiday to make sure you get a great room.

The Room: Cleaned daily no problems - a lot nicer than those in Spain/Greece - spacious - hot showers

The Food: All restaurants were good - a few bits on each menu you could pay extra for - we expected that. The first night arriving off the plane - don't expect much other than what is left. The 24 hour pre visit booking system is a pain in the behind. Surely you could do this in one visit for the week.

The Staff: The Egyptian people are very hard working and will do anything for you. Always friendly and always there to refill your glass whilst you struggle to get through the day on your sunbed. Glasses sometimes weren't clean and the pouring beer from cans and bottles into a half pint glass is just a silly idea - Give me the bottle :)

The Transfer: Ignore the coach driver when he puts his hand out for a tip before you even get on the bus! Also beware of people pretending to be baggage people who offer to take your cases from arrivals to coach.

The Swimming Pools - Lots of them - all clean and plenty of sunbeds

The Sea and snorkelling you have to do and is very beautiful.

The Russians - Very rude to the hotel staff and all around them thinking they are the most important and everyone owes them something.

The RedSea Rep - Entertaining helpful guy as was Dee the Redsea manager who was often around talking to guests.

The Grand Spa people - We did buy a session of "the feet nibbling fish in a tank experience" and a course of massages which apparently are the way forward.

There are lots of people walking the hotel grounds trying to flog massages, beauty treatments, henna tattoos, diving trips, boat trips and coloured sand. They did take no for an answer when you were firm with them.

Illness: There were four of us and I had 34 mosquito bites across my chins and feet which were nasty. The local spray called "off" is supposed to deal with these (available at the pharmacy over the road from main entrance). Also the last 24hours on the toilet every ten minutes wasn't that great. All other members of the family were fine.

In conclusion I came to a poor country and expect things to be different. I expect to get ill at some point. It isn't the UK. The weather is brilliant (49 degrees the day we arrived) and it was a week of total relaxation.

Room Tip: Room 417 and 419 had nice pool views

Arrived late evening luckily small buffet restaurant still opened. Had been to hotel seven weeks previous so knew what to expect as we had had a really lovely holiday.

Sadly same can not be said this time, due to changes within Egypt a lot of countries were being cautious about holidaying there and the hotel was over run with drunk Russians.

Drunk Russians using the beautiful gardens as toilets , the whole hotel as an ashtray / litter bin and generally being loud and abusive had taken it's toll on both the hotel and its staff. Evening entertainment was a singer in the bar with Drunk Russians grabbing the microphone and singing with their equally drunk women dancing so provocatively at times it was X rated. Meals in the buffet restaurants was a place to avoid again due to Drunk Russians as was any bar from morning noon til night.

The customer relations ladies Sha , Leny and Hannah were lovely and I truly felt for them and the staff in the hotel all were great and it was awful to see the abuse some of them received from yes you can guess Drunk Russians .

I literally cannot put into words how horrendous our stay was here. But I will try!

To begin with, this is certainly not a 5* hotel, it's a 3* hotel - and that is being incredibly generous. The first room that they tried to place us in looked like it was something from a horror set, it was filthy, and looked like the last time someone had entered it was in the early 80's. After arguing with the front desk staff for 20 minutes on the phone, they moved us to a newer block - it still wasn't 5* but at least it was cleaner.

Speaking of cleanliness…. our bed sheets were not changed for 4 days, dirty dishes and glasses were not removed from our room each day, towels were not replaced (I had to call 'housekeeping' and beg them for bath clean towels - which evidentially turned up the following evening), the cleaner entered our room twice whilst we were sleeping (the do not disturb sign was up in clear view), the only thing that he seemed to do in our room was use our toilet and leave the evidence. Disgusting.

Moving on, oh yes it gets better - I lost weight on my holiday due to the food being inedible to humans. not all of the food at the all inclusive buffet was labeled (making it possibly dangerous to people with allergies!). Because this food was so disgusting we lived off of spaghetti ordered through room service - which they got wrong every night despite ordering the same thing every night!) - I don't eat meat, ordered tomato pasta, every night I got beef bolognese without fail. Other than this, the booking process for the al a carte is just ridiculous: you can only book the day before you go, and have to book this by making the hike to reception at 5pm every day (booking over the phone was not possible). The last thing that I will say about the 'food' is that the lunchtime menu is incredibly inaccurate, you don't receive what is described at all (I've added pictures).

Moving on to the general pool area, if the idea is having to sunbathe whilst raw sewage spews out from the drains around you, then defiantly book this hotel. When they finally decided to fix the problem 4 days later, they dug up the patio in the middle of the day, without cordoning off the area so that people AND CHILDREN were walking amongst the rubble. The smell made us gag, and there was no escaping it.

The last irritating little fact was that when we booked (3 days before we were due to arrive) we were told that there was wifi in the rooms. There isn't. What gets even better is that the wifi was broken for our entire stay. Each day we would be told that it was getting fixed tomorrow, which just never happened. The real joke is that we were told that it was already broken a week prior to our arrival, something that the sales agent from ice lolly.com neglected to tell us.

A few other things to bare in mind:
- the staff on room service barely speak English - cheesy chips was brought to us as a cold plate of chips accompanied by a cold plate of sliced cheese.
- there were rooms dotted around the resort that looked like they had been burnt down/broken into (picture attached)
- the running water in the rooms is yellow
- tea and coffee is not provided in the room, this is charged extra
- none of the drinks were cold
- some staff are incredibly rude and perverse

Holiday from hell. If you are looking for a nice stay in Sharm el Sheikh, Jez Mirabel Beach was awesome - I stayed there last year and would definitely go back.

Room Tip: If they decide to put you in a hostel looking room, complain immediately and ask to be moved to the newer refurbished rooms. Block 30 plus.
