“Good hotel let down by lack of variety of food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 October 2009

Returned from the Grand Azure on 3 October having spent two very pleasant weeks chilling and lazing about. I was slightly worried about the number of reviews where people had gone down with stomach upsets but as long as you don't drink the tap water, and use bottled water to clean your teeth, there is nothing to worry about.

The hotel and grounds are very impressive and my partner turned to me and said she didn't think it was possible to top our hotel in Turkey last year, but she had been wrong. The pools are all lovely, all have swim up bars, and we never had any trouble getting a sunbed. There were 4 waterslides which were all great fun and were open from 10am to 1pm and then from 3pm to 5pm.

We used the Mediteranean, Italian and Chinese a la carte restaurants. The mediteranean was the best, the Chinese was okay, and our least favourite was the Italian. Every main dish in the Italian was served with mashed potato which I have never found in any Italian restaurant before.

Although we had a lovely holiday, there were too many little niggles for me to want to return. On the first day we handed in our towel cards, the pool boy insisted on bringing the towels to our sunbed and laying them out, and then stood there just a little too long obviously waiting for a tip. In fact this one pool boy was a bit of a pest the entire time we were there. I also found it a bit strange that the only pool that was supposedly heated, the large lagoon pool nearest the hotel lobby, was actually the coldest of the 3 pools! As far as we were concerned, and it would seem from other reviews we are in the minority, the food in the buffet restaurant although hot and perfectly well cooked, was repetitive. We didn't have lunch in there the entire second week because we were sick of seeing the same dishes. There are only two bars to get drinks in the evening, and had we wanted to be entertained in the evening we would have been very disappointed. Also if you read one of the previous reviews stating that there are not so many Russians there any more, think again.

After a few days I asked my partner if she was offered a free week long holiday, would she prefer to come back here or to the hotel we had stayed at in Turkey, she plumped for the Turkish hotel straight away. I would have to agree with her.

You will have a nice holiday, most of our gripes are minor, and it would seem many people do return, in fact we met some Geordies who had been out there in January and came back only 8 months later. Most of the staff are great, and just like anywhere you go there will always be one or two grumpy ones.

When you walk into the reception area of the Grand Azure Tropican you think wow what a hotel. You are greated with a magnificant piece of doomed architecture that Christopher Wren would be envious of. However this facard hides many tainted edges. The hotel is suffering from lack lusture with the rooms, we had a family room, very basic with chipped and old furniture, very basic trim and certainly lacking the pre reqisits of 5 star luxury. We went all inclusive with 1st choice. They would not be our 1st choice ever again. We understood 5 star all inclusive to mean exactly that. All inclusive. Not the case at the Grand Azure Tropicana. Buyers beware. You get a fridge but have to pay for the contents unless you upgrade from a red band to a green band at a rate of $45 per day per person. The staff however including the Dolci Vienna entertainment crew are all 5 star. If however you are up for a 3 star mad rush for breakfast and dinner in the main Tropicana meal hall then OK. Personally that is not five star. We had to continually wait for a table at both break fast and dinner and their general clenliness neds a lot to be desired. A quich wipe with a fly riden napik and that your lot. The al la carte restauraunts are the best option. However you have to que every morning to get a booking of one from four. We have been to all inclusive hotels in both Mexico and Domincan and this hotel doesn't even come close. We would visit again if it wasn't for the the bun fight at the restauraunt both morning and nights. We did kindly suggest to mangement that they split their servings starting with families at 18-30 through to say 20-00 hrs and the adults from 20-30 through to 21-30 hrs. Me thinks this fell on deaf ears. The pools and garden areas are are great but if you have small kids the surrounding pool areas are like a skating rink once wet. Again maintenance around these areas would not be classed a 5 star. We would class this hotel and the fcilities as a 3/4 star maximum rating. The pricehowever is firmly 5 star.

Arrived about 10PM on 6th October, was quickly shown to room which was perfect. Located on grd floor right next door to swimming pool & billard bar..what a result!! Room clean and tidy and kept that way by the room attendant (Adel)
1st morning went to beach about 9 to have walk around and one of the towel guys (Hashem) recommended that we took sunbeds early has it would get busy later on..tipped him a £1 and offered that he reserved the same beds every day...gave a £1 tip every day and was ensured that beds were kept and even made a chair up for wife who prefered to sit and read...
Beach bar excellent service again, Zackariya and his team looked after us...being as the sunbeds were close to the bar once spotted that drinks were finished would come over and replenish!!
Snorkelling at beach good...about a 3/4 mile walk to end of pier to access the reef. Need reef shoes access reef to save cut feet, but once out very good.
Food at beach OK...serving burgers, hot dogs, kebabs & fish/chips and in the 'Tropicana' restaurant made to order pizzas & pastas...
Main Buffet restaurant served good food, having a good selection...inside though was a bit noisy for our liking so arrived early, took a drink from the 'terrace' bar and bagged and outside table.
The ala carte restaurants are very good, gave them all a try at least once, prefering the steak in Italian & the beef in the chinese. Again service was excellent in all.
Before we went looked at all reviews, some mentioned the slow service at the lobby bar..did'nt find it a problem, they adopted a queing system at all bars and had enough staff on to quickly cater for all. Failing that take a seat in the lobby and one of the waiters will soon find you and take your order...it's at your discretion, but give a £1 or 5/10LE (egyptian pound) tip and they'll look after you.
Facilities directly outside hotel are good..bank (24Hr Cash machine) & supermarket to right and shops, pharmacy and pub (Churchills showing English football) to left...further out many shops etc selling all types of gifts.
Always seemed to end up at the 'Billiard bar' last knockings where Esam looked after us,
naturally I suppose because it was right on our doorstep! Finally there is enough to keep the kids ocuppied, water slides, kids club etc and the evening entertainment by the Dolce vienna team who seemed to work endlessly at the pools, beach and right through till the early hours.
All in all..you make your own holiday, but the Grand Azure is in my opinion a top class hotel, which is kept neat & tidy by the efficient service staff and is run by staff who cannot do enough for you to ensure that you enjoy your holiday.
Would definately go back.

We have been to Egypt and here at Nabq bay several times before and we thought we would give this hotel a go.
There is one central buffet resteraunt split into 2 levels. The range of food is typical and it depends on how fussy you are whether you will like it or not. Because I am pretty gregarious when it comes to food, soI found loads of choice, but my wife and daughter stuck to pasta and chicken, The salads are good and there was 2 choices of freshly made soup every day. We ate lunch at the beach every day, where they did pizzas, pasta, hot dogs burgers and the like with chips. There is plenty of fresh fruit at every meal. We didn't do breakfast.
The reef at the end of the very long jetty is a wonderful experience, if you are brave enough. Make sure you have beach shoes and a rash shirt + long shorts would be a good move also, because coral can give you a very bad laceration. They will only let you on to the reef when the currents and wind drop. That was a big disappointment for me, but sensible for a beginner.
There are plenty of choices of pools and the water slides are available in the morning and after and hours break again in the afternoon. I never noticed it to be difficult to get a sunbed even if we came out late, however I soon made a deal with the towel boys, so I had my place laid out for us every day.
There is entertainment at the bar next to the resteraunt, the main reception + a show by the animation team at the amphitheatre, but we never bothered with any of it, preferring to people watch in the lobby. There is also a disco, but again we never bothered.
As I said earlier we have been here before, so didn't go to Naama Bay. There is plenty of shopping to be had locally. Turn left and you will find the Jasmine Centre, right will bring you to The Strada. Either will give you plenty of opportunity to spend money. If I want anything I offer 1/3 of what the salesmen ask and don't move much from that. Prices have soared over the last couple of years, probably because we are such poor hagglers. We first came in 2001 and you could buy a belly dancer sarong thing for about LE8, now they want LE70, but I paid LE35. There is a 24/7 just out the hotel if you want soft drinks for the room, but they only have coke zero, which is dire. If you want a bigger choice turn right and keep going until you get past the Oriental Resort, where there is a Metro Supermarket and the prices are also fixed. The cheap Egyptian packets of biscuits there are very passable and one 1/10 of the branded names.
Tips : If you get a stomach upset go to the pharmacy outside the hotel, who will dispense you something that will get you back to enjoying your holiday quickly.
Change you currency in Egypt, you will get 10% more than UK.
Tip small and often, you will find the service level jump, more than worth it.
Be polite chatty and friendly, Egyptian people particularly like Brits as we spend more, and you will get a lot more out of your holiday. Most trips are better booked through your rep, becasue they are properly insured, but if you want to do a boat trip check out the dive centre and save 40%.I only went on one trip this year, 1/2 day by speedboat to Tiran Island. It was OK, very wet and not enough snorkeling time for me. Next time I will I will do the all day trip. My wife had a pedicure and facial while my daughter di the trip and she was full of praise
If you have any questions drop me a line.

Fabulous resort! Bit slow when we arrived to get us to our rooms we were hanging around the reception a while!
The rooms could do with being updated, but were spotless..... The entertainment was poor! But! apparently that goes for most hotels in Egypt!
APART from that it was absoulutely gorgeous! 38 every day and not a cloud in the sky, no problems gettin loungers by any of the 3 pools.
The buffet restuarant food was out of this world and could eat there every day and not have the same thing twice.....
The other restaurants Chinise Italian Fish & mediteranian were excellent and had to be booked by 10am the day before, we did the italian twice the chinise and the fish once!
Book all trips on the beach! you'll still be with the other who have book with the reps but will pay hafe the price!
Naama Bay was amazing! Try the sheshah cafe with the hubbly bubbly pipes...
ENJOY! We did and would go back.............

Returned on 14th October after spending two weeks at this hotel. Had a good flight with Thomson, no delays and got nthrough airport at Egypt with not too much hassle. If you dont need a visa make sire you dont queue in wrong place though!!!
On arrival at hotel was impressed with the cleanliness of it all. Got shown to room quickly and once there was a bit suprised to see we had been allocated two single beds ( and they were kids sizes not the bigger ones). As we are a couple in early 50's this wasnt quite what we expected and we were there to celebtrate our 30th wedding anniversary. This was quickly sorted next day by the effecient Thomson rep, had tried reception but this is the only area of the complex that the service is less than desirable we found!!!
Was very hot, 40 degrees most days, we had no funny tummies at all, washed hands in anti bacterial a lot, drank loads of water and just generally careful in the sun. The food was very good in the buffet and we enjoyed the chinese and italian a la cartes. Went twice to the italian as loved the steak in there!!! Odd choice for an itailian but it is egypt!!!
Drinks were ok, not brillaint but you get used to them after couple days. I drank rum and diet coke and my hubby the lager, and we did have the white wine a couple of nights.
Tips do go a long way out there, we tipped the towel boy a pound every day and we had our beds ready for us every morning so didnt have to worry about that. There is loads of beds till about 10 any way, but not always with a parasol. Tipped the waiter a couple of pounds here and there as well and have brillaint service out on the terrace in the evenings. Pounds coins were good too tip with, but they do occasionally ask you to change up a tenners worth as they cant change coins in the bank. We took a bag of pound coins with us and found this very useful. There money is very grubby
so the less you handle it the better!!!
We went to a restaurant called on the deck for our anniversary, which is in Naam Bay and they pick you up and take you back. Set on a deck on the sea with lights on the sea. Stunning and very good food. If you need any details on this please feel free to ask.
All in all a very good hotel and spoke to lots of people out there who had been to others and said this was the best one they had found. Only one thing lets it down and thats the evening entertainment but apparently this is a common thing in egypt. We just made our own entertainment with other people we meet and had a really good time. It certainly did not spoil our holiday.
There is a supermarket just outside the hotel which is reasonable and a little market down the road which we got a couple of souvernirs from but there isnt really that much to buy out there. Be warned if you are looking at thr Ghd's in the shop inside the hotel, there are fakes and people have said they can catch fire easily!!!!
There are three large pools, one of whcih is ideal for childlren and young families. We didnt use this one but it looked fun for the kids They had there own play area and even a chill out area with telly in it if it got to hot for them. Had there own little food items in there as well.
Other pool nearest the beach we found the quitest and more for adults so that suited us.
Had a swim up bar as well.
Would def recomend this hotel to family and friends and if you have any questions etc please ask.

we have just returned after spending 9 amazing days in this huge beautiful hotel. i can not understand why some of the reviews are negative as i am a very fussy eater and found the food fine, and like to stay in nice clean places and this hotel is spotless.... we ate in the alcarte resturants most nights which are very nice...the staff are very friendly and always cleaning...there are many pools to sunbathe round and also a waterpark , this hotel even has its own clinic ..and a outdoor theatre. outside the hotel is a supermarket , a bank and many gift shops.i went with my partner to celebrate my 40th birthday and on the day of my birthday we flew to cairo which was great,we spent the morning at the egyptian museum then after lunch we went to the pyramids which is breathtaking.there is a shop opposite the hotel which you can book excursions. enjoyed it so much would go back tomorrow.....nic & ste hartlepool
