Came back from the Sierra yesterday and had a lovely, relaxing holiday. Went to the resort expecting a lot after reading fantastic reviews - these expectations were mostly fulfilled.

The hotel itself is beautiful. Grounds are very well maintained by some extremely hard working gardeners. Each pool has a swim up bar which was great. We always struggled to find a bed next to the quieter pools as we like to use our own beach towels - this was a problem as we found that at dawn, the life guards would put out lots of the hotel's towels to reserve sunbeds for guests. Not sure how many, but the only beds that would be left at 8am were the ones next to the kid's pool - great if you've got children, not so if you're a couple. The pools and pool bars were fantastic though with great service, sometimes even getting drinks brought to your bed! Pool snack bars also good - the man who makes the sandwiches in the sandwich hut is lovely. Only one bad experience - the snack bar next to the adult's pool had a grumpy chef there who gave us a stone cold chicken sandwich (these were always hot) so couldn't eat it.

We stayed in Link 6 which overlooked the kid's pool, and have to agree with an earlier review, as saw many families placed in rooms overlooking the adult's pool, yet we as a couple, were given a room with a 10 second stroll to the kid's pool. Link 6 looked nice outside but inside clearly held the older rooms. On our first morning we even had wooden planks from our room's roof falling right on to our balcony! However this was sorted straight away along with a complaint about our failing air-con (which then worked perfectly for the rest of our holiday!) - somebody came within 10 minutes which was fantastic. Isaac our cleaner was so lovely, always stopping to have a conversation and checking everything was ok. He even came back to clean our room at 6pm one day as we were so ill and couldn't face moving until later!

The beach is a 5-10 min stroll depending on pace (and heat!) but was beautiful. The snorkelling is must do, but if you're not a confident swimmer simply standing on the jetty is amazing to watch the fish go by. Beach bar ok and activities are also held here.

The food standard was fine in the main restaurant however service very poor (although all staff very friendly, especially the two ladies who greet you). The problem came upon finding a table - on numerous occasions each day (both breakfast and dinner) I had to ask for a waiter to lay our table as they would leave us with no cutlery. With breakfast I had a daily struggle asking for coffee/tea and sometimes had to remind waiters that I'd asked them. Fresh milk was only given to us on the first day which I found a little off putting as you had no idea how long the milk jug on your table had been left for, so often had coffee black. The bbq night was lovely as was the international night. Egyptian dancers often turned up as you ate your dinner which was great. The long trousers rule we did not see enforced once depsite the huge sign as you came in. I understand men are allowed outside with shorts, however most of the males inside also had shorts on! Felt sorry for my partner who each night endured the heat in long trousers as so to abide. Drinks lovely - cocktails (especially the mojitos!) are fab! Ate at Akuna Matata twice and food delicious.

Entertainment during the day was good. Can't really comment on hotel shows at night as didn't watch any - so much going on in Soho square we didn't feel the need to! Soho Square also hosts its own professional shows each night. Fontana bar was lovely to sit outside however waiter's had a 'one-drink' attitude towards guests - very hard to get a second drink! Queen Vic was fab as was the Crystal Lounge which is beautiful. Some cocktails included in AI option too. Went to the Sunday Caligula club night at the Savoy hotel - the club is absolutely beautiful! Definitely recommend - two free drinks each and prices after that are very fair. I have to challenge some comments that state the hotel is for 'older people'. We are a couple in our twenties and found that often the animation team would come and tell us about nights out they were organising to the nearby clubs.

Unfortunately, we were very ill during the holiday with the dreaded stomach troubles so missed out on two days of our holiday. Unsure as to what caused the illness as we were very careful with ice/water and used antibac hand gel constantly! Guest relations staff were fabulous though - brought a huge basket of bread and pastries to our room as we couldn't face breakfast.Throughout the week we received numerous courtesy phone calls checking everything was ok which I thought was brilliant. All reception staff and concierge lovely too and very efficient!

Overall, we have a really lovely holiday. Although it may seem like there were a few complaints these were only tiny niggles and would not at all put us off coming back - in fact, I'm looking for prices for next year already! There is just so much to do and the AI package is fantastic (don't forget to book your free massages!). The Sierra definitely gave us a well needed break.

Room Tip: Link 3 rooms look very new. Ask for a balcony room if you want to avoid mozzies!

Dear guest,
Thank you for posting your valuable review. At the Sierra we are always looking to improving our service and therefore we are grateful for your feedback.

We have 8 pools at the resort and 5 of them are located in quiet, adult areas, so we are surprised to learn that it was hard to find a sunbed. In any situation like this we would urge our guests to report the issue or inconvenience to the pool boys who are always happy to assist you with any requests.

With regard to the grumpy chef who gave you cold chicken – again we would request that you make your point straight away so that we could fix it. We could have replaced the grumpy chef with a happy one who knows how to serve HOT chicken. Grumpy has been spoken to.

Regarding rooms, it is on the plan to update rooms in link 6. We have already updated 60% of guests’ rooms and we try to do it as quickly and efficiently as possible. However, it does depend on hotel occupancy.

Regarding the service in the restaurant, we do our best to make all guests feel comfortable and are served at table. However, some delays can occur due to high occupancy and in such cases we incorporate a self-service tea and coffee station and a bar with a barman who will serve you. We will pass your comments on to the F&B department for their consideration.

The Fontana Bar Is located at the Soho Square and the staff serve not only Sierra Guests but outsider guests as well. Therefore, you can find slow service when it’s very busy. However, the relevant department has been informed in order to make some improvements for the future. Thank you for flagging this up for us.

We are sorry that you had a stomach upset and hope that ity did not have too much effect on your enjoyment. However, we are delighted to know that our staff looked after you well. We do hope that recovered quickly. We do adopt the highest standards of hygiene here at the Sierra and you can be confident that we use filtered water for our ice cubes, so they are safe. This is not necessarily true for all resorts or hotels in Egypt.

It is of immense satisfaction to us when we receive such a glowing review from our guests. We read with great delight that our team made your stay so enjoyable and we appreciate the praise for our team members. They do work exceptionally hard but they are very well-trained and they enjoy their jobs at the Sierra so we are very fortunate. We have a staff motivation program which allows the staff to earn points for good mentions and all sorts of other good work and they can win some nice prizes so guests’ comments are always welcome. We have found that treating our staff well and training them well makes them happy and makes the guests happy too, so the hard work is worth it if only for the smiles.
Once again thank you very much for sharing your comments on Trip Advisor and we look forward to welcoming you back to the Sierra in the near future.

The Sierra is a fantastic hotel. We went in a group of nine...(3 of which were returning for the 3rd time)!!!! We had 4 kids with us aged from 5 to 11 who were kept well entertained by the fantastic animation team...especially Claire and Samuel!! The bar staff were brilliant Mina Ebeed, Bahaa Mabrouk and Sobhi to name a few. The lifeguards at the pool and the beach were very friendly and helpful the kids thought the world of Sam. The new kids club for 8 to 15 year old is amazing with playstation, Pool table, Air hockey, x-box and wii's. We were made to feel very welcome and enjoyed every minute of our stay. I would highly recommend this hotel and we will definitely return :)

I really want to be fair on this review - we have been to Sharm 5 times and can compare this to a few resorts now , and generally we were disappointed . I think generally it depends on who you are and what you want - There are a lot of repeat visits here , and I can understand why - its very good for adult couples , adult only pools where you have your own barman , and towels out by life guard etc - away from the hustle of the main pool . With kids , you have pretty much the main pool area and that's it - and in comparison to other resorts its not that big , and a bit of a noisy bull bait at times -- get up early if you want a place and the music means you cant hear your own headphones. There's still little to attract older kids , the place is crying out for some water slides etc. The kids club caters for small children mainly ( usual colouring in ) - although there are visits to ice skating and bowling which is a plus point. They opened a teen area last week in response to the problem , its located well away from everything - no signs or anything , and was a pretty soulless place , both clubs are run by the animation team and they are ok - English is limited though so interaction with the kids tends to be in poor supply .
Rooms - fine nothing special - good furniture , ours was small when the extra bed was added , and despite requested never got more than 2 of everything , the balcony was also a squeeze for 2 people - nice touches robes and slippers . sons folding bed was a sight and a state .

Food
you don't go to Egypt for the food - and the buffet was fine , nicer than some we have had . Akuna Matata is an underground fast food hall - not particularly a nice place to sit and the foods not worth going for.
Café Chino - Lebanese - foods good , different , - waiter service terrible , 45 minutes wait while they served paying others !

Staff
mainly very nice and friendly : reception always friendly and helpful ,lady at guest relations (Mart...- sorry didn't get name ) very helpful , greeters in restaurant friendly - generally everyone . People who went beyond were Sopbhy from the pool bar (pm ) - a really helpful guy , especially when I was ill one of the few to actually spend a bit of time to say hello , and Claire from the kids club , tried to help our son enjoy his holiday . The lifeguard from the kids pool was a real pain , rude and arrogant we unfortunately met him first and got neither a smile or a word when asking for towels , he was extremely friendly with others seemed to have some selling scam going , we were told by another ignored family that you had to tip him - witnessed this , but decided to just move sunbeds - didn't get his name , he wore no badge but was there 17th and 18th July. Although advised to tip at the beginning of hols - staff don't hanker for it -all bar staff are fine , friendly , (other) lifeguards the same - but if you do, they will serve you first at the bar (and give you the tall glasses - the small plastic cups are a waste of time) - annoying at the pool bar where there's a few - do you pay them all ! , and the lifeguards put your towels out , we didn't do this as we like to move around not stay in the same place every day . Waiters in the restaurant although always courteous , don't help you at all - get your own drinks - the barman there always has time for everyone , even the kids. Never knew who our cleaner was , never got any extra- no towel sculptures - , and the bathroom was never that clean - hairs that were not ours ( urghh).

A big selling point is Soho Sq , which is great , being able to use other pubs , and shop without hassle is a plus - Queen Vic , nice barmen , no problems , except for mosquitos ! , Fontana bar so you can see the shows - repetitive dancing mainly ): , and singing in the crystal lounge . Must mention the animation variety show at the hotel - the first one was so crazy bad it was very funny (:. Also the vouchers you get make your AI extra , we did the bowling , ice skating and culturama ( this could be so much better !) , the free massages are very good , the full ones very expensive.
Trips from the hotel tour reps are expensive - must think we are as rich as the Savoy ! - try the sierra Facebook page , Mohammed time tours , is a good bet. his stargazing , quads , and water sports were half the cost . Also did cleo pk , book with you're rep , the costs the same , and their bus takes you - its a small waterpark , but you can spend a few hours.

We were ill here , so were a few that we talked to .bad stomach cramps had to get tablets from the pharmacy (£10)- first time for this, but it happens everywhere in Sharm.
The beach is ok - small , and the snorkelling is good .
I agree with other comments the hotel attracts large groups of holidaying Egyptians , especially at weekends - they can take over , and be pushy - a group of about 20 were evicted when we were there for bad behaviour .

my main and in my view serious complaint here was the lack of air conditioning - in the first week it was fine , you had individual controls in the rooms , and the restaurant, bars etc.. were cool . then it stopped , guest relations informed they had a general problem . our room became very warm never below 25 degrees , it was set at 10 . the restaurant and bar areas were hot and uncomfortable - they brought in some big fans from outside. we complained 3 times , and to our rep who saw the manager , who finally sent maintenance , who said it was ok !!- well it matched the rest of the hotel - it then went up to 25.5 . I've never been in a sharm resort that didn't have air con - and have stayed in better 3 star in this respect .

would we go back - no , at least not with kids , there are much better resorts . Just to mention our Thomas Cook rep (Ahmed) , he was a good honest guy who tried to help .

Dear Guest,
Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review and for giving us the opportunity to respond.

We have 8 lovely pools around the Sierra resort, each one with its own character and purpose. You can only hear the music during the animation activities at the main pool from 10am to 1pm and from 3 till 4pm. There are also accommodation blocks and vegetation between the pools so the noise is very well shielded. For the kids, we offer a kids’ pool and the main pool.

We do appreciate your suggestions about the water slides. However, the Sierra Resort is not the best place for slides as we just don’t have enough space. We do offer other activities for the guests though and as you mentioned, we opened the Teens club for the kids from 8 to 15 years old and it is located next to the tennis courts just opposite the Spa centre.

Please note that the design of the Akuna Matata was taken from the famous Disney cartoon and the main idea of it is that it is more child-friendly and makes families feel more comfortable in a place where the children are entertained during meal times. Akuna Matata is a food outlet where guests can choose to eat if they so wish at discounted prices with a selection of fish, burgers, pizza, tapas and Egyptian snacks from which to choose. We have looked into your comments regarding the service at Café Chino with some concern, and this has been reported to our outlet manager for his immediate action. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.

We are surprised to read a negative review about one of our staff members. We would like to extend our apologies to those of your family who were offended but we wish you had let us know during your stay. This member of staff did not mean to be offensive and has been very apologetic about the misunderstanding. Please note that each of our staff members has a name tag and wearing it is a must.
The Head of Department has been informed and all necessary actions and training have now been taken.

Regarding the HK service, please note that we provide a service twice a day, unlike many hotels which only offer once per day. The house boy should certainly be doing more than just changing sheets and mopping floors. He should be tidying, dusting, cleaning the bathroom and toilet and changing towels. If he was falling short of that we would like to be informed. We are in the process of identifying the houseboy responsible in order to take corrective action. We do a lot of spot checks but perhaps we will have to increase them. Your comments have been passed on to the Housekeeping department.

Regarding the service in the main restaurant, we do our best to make all guests feel comfortable and to be served at table. However, some delays can occur due to high occupancy and in such cases we place a tea and coffee facilities station and a bar with a barman who will serve you. We will pass your comments on to the relevant department for their consideration.

We are sorry to learn that you had stomach upset. We take great care with food preparation at the Sierra and illnesses due to food issues within the hotel are extremely rare. When our guests go out of the hotel they are exposed to different standards of hygiene and this can often be the cause. However, we are delighted to know that our staff looked after you well. We do hope that you recovered quickly.

With regard to the other guests at the Sierra, we have a broad ethnic mix of British, Russians, Ukrainians, Italians, Dutch, Germans, Egyptians and a whole host of other nationalities and we treat each and every one of them with the respect that our guests deserve. There are occasions when there may be a few more of one nationality than another and this is usually because of different dates of national holidays.

Regarding the A/C, we were subjected to a cut in the gas supply which provides electricity to our major air conditioning units. This happened all over Sharm El Sheikh at the time and was the result of a fracture in the main gas pipe somewhere between Cairo and Sharm. We do apologize for such an inconvenience but it was out of our hands.

Making the right choices is important and as you say in your title, it depends what you are looking for. When families are selecting the appropriate hotel for their holiday they have to take in to account the ages and the personal preferences of the members of the family and decide what kind of hotel they need. Perhaps you would have been happier with a more active, water slide type of hotel. But thank you for choosing the Sierra on this occasion and we do hope to see you back here one day.

Kind regards,

The Sierra is an excellent holiday venue for families and couples. The room was of a high standard of furnishings and it's cleanliness was maintained throughout our stay. The only thing preventing an excellent rating on this occasion was the air conditioning system not working efficiently leaving the dining room at times an unpleasant experience, and the bedrooms not as cool as we would have wished. The hotel staff from front of house to the gardeners were very friendly and helpful. Special mention to Raphael and the bar staff at the quiet pool who ensured all our needs were met. The staff in the dining room were helpful and courteous, especially the two ladies who greeted everyone on entering. However the hotel's policy regarding dress requirements for dinner appears to be being eroded, although attempts were made to enforce this, it would be an advantage to have clarity on this issue one way or the other. I would strongly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a quality holiday in this area of Egypt, we will certainly be returning as our second trip was as good if not better than the first.

Room Tip: Link 1 rooms high standard and quiet.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for the very positive review of your stay with us at the Sierra. We always like to hear that our hotel lived up to expectations.

Our staff will be pleased with your comments. We have a staff motivation program which allows the staff to earn points for good mentions and win some nice prizes . Our employees having special training program which help them to increase their knowledge and provide the guests an excellent service.

With regards to the air conditioning, this is unfortunately due to a problem caused by a broken gas pipe in the whole of the Sinai area, which affected the gas short system. The main source for the gas has been affected, We most definitely hope that the problem will be running in perfect condition on your next visit.

Your comments regarding the dress code in the restaurant, will be thoroughly investigated and passed onto the relevant management as we are usually adhered the dress code policy in our hotel .

Once again, we really appreciate your review and we look forward to welcoming you back for your third visit.

The Sierra is a great hotel for families & couples alike. Its location is just behind Soho Square which is excellent for shopping. The staff are really friendly - special mention to Wagdy the pool attendant, Milad in the pool bar and Louis in the Beach bar - a real credit to the hotel.
Numerous pools to choose from, main lagoon pool is good and if you want something quieter the salt water pool by the spa is good. All have pool bars which is a bonus!! We stayed in room 7421 which have recently been built and would definitely recommend. The food is generally very good but make sure you eat in the Lebanese restaurant(Café Chino) the food was excellent!!
Take advantage of the free 15min massage its well worth it.We also did the bowling and the Culturama show. Short transfer time only about 10mins is a real bonus too!

Room Tip: If you don't like lots of noise ask for rooms 7415-7421.

Dear guest,
Thank you for posting your valuable review. At the Sierra we are always looking to improving our service and therefore we are grateful for your feedback.
As you mentioned, the Sierra shares the huge property with Soho Square, a square mile of shops, bars, restaurants and entertainment. There are ten restaurants to visit including Chinese, Thai, Indian, Egyptian, Japanese, Sushi, Steak, food cellar and Mediterranean. There are ten bars offering different ambiences and a centre stage featuring live shows every night. There is a bowling alley, an ice skating rink, a kids’ playzone, snooker/billiards table, squash and tennis courts, Culturama (a 180 degree screen showing the history of Egypt), a dancing fountain and over 100 shops to browse around, a night club “Pangaea” with two drinks included. At Soho you really can buy anything from a bottle of water to a diamond ring. There’s a lot to do here and no hassle from the shopkeepers.
The staff will be so happy to have their names mentioned as they will get points towards prizes but we know that they are delighted to learn that the guests remember them with such affection. It really means a lot to them. We are giving opportunity to our employees to be developed ,providing technical and languages training programs .

We are delighted that you enjoyed your holiday with us and we look forward to welcoming you back to the Sierra in the near future.
