“the place to go”

I see Allan has beat us to it. we were upgraded from the baron palms and for us this was just perfect. this was our 6th time to Egypt and this is the best hotel we have been to by far.
we were the only family to arrive at the time so check in was quick and easy. we had a small hiccup as they only had 2 beds in each of the rooms and we required athird bed in one of the rooms. this was arranged within 15 mins. we arrived late, after dinner had finished. no problem, they had arranged a cold meat salad for us in our room.
the rooms themselves were spacious and cleanliness was excellent. we were towards the back of the hotel so the outlook was not all that great but hey, you don't book a holiday to stay in a room.
we found the food to be quite good. there was only a couple of nights where we had a bit of difficulty with choice but for the most part, we always found something to eat and the quality was good. towards the end of the holiday the pool restaurant reopened and we preferred to go there for a late afternoon snack.
we did not have too much trouble with upset stomachs and this is the first time I had no problems whatsoever.
the service in the restaurant was usually prompt and attentative and we never felt under pressure at any time to tip in order to receive good service but did so from time to time.
we spent most of our time at the dive centre or at the salt water pool. this was a quiet haven and we never had any difficulty in getting a sun lounger.
having been upgraded from the baron palms we were on the standard all inclusive. some others in the same situation had the premium all inclusive which was a bit annoying however we did not find this out until the end of the holiday. it was not too much of a problem for us as we mostly had soft drinks. we prefferred to use the beach bar. service there was very attentive and friendly and this too was a relaxing place to be.
the dive centre is run by Sinai divers (www.sinaidivers.com) we have used them several times and they are an excellent outfit. the house reef is excellent as is the snorkelling from the jetty.
if there was one criticism it came in the form of the beds. they were very hard and lumpy and Ifound it difficult to get a good nights sleep. we were also aware that some people had problems with mosquito bites but we never had any problems. we are also aware that some others may not feel they have had a good experience but for us this was an excellent holiday. we are booked up for the baron palms for june 2011. if we end up back here that would do us just fine.

Just returned from the Baron Resort yesterday and had a fantastic holiday. The location of the hotel is great. right on the beach with excellent snorkelling. We were premium all inclusive and found it good value for money. No extra charge for safe, towels and the mini bar is replenished daily. We found most of the bar staff and waiters friendly and the staff cleaning and working in the gardens work very hard.We spent most of the day at the saltwater pool which is for adults only , although the notice on the wall saying NO CHILDREN is very small and children were taken into the pool. The food was very good with a choice of restaurants and drinks were plentiful. We met some lovely people who made our holiday even better. If you want a relaxing holiday with fantastic weather staring at books this is the place to go.

We were booked to go to the Palms but about a month before our holiday we were told they were over booked . This didn`t worry us as we were now closer to the dive centre which was now just a hop skip and jump from our rooms.
Every member of staff from cleaners to area general manager was very friendly. Here is a good example I ranout of coffee in my room and said to the cleaner in the corridor and he RAN along the corridor to get me some more!! service can`t get much better than that!

It was so good we will be back next year on 13 June

Like other reviewers I was not expecting to be writing about Baron Resort because we had booked a garden view room at Baron Palms. On arrival we were transferred to the Resort and a beautiful sea view room overlooking the beach. The whole holiday was excellent - the friendliness and politeness of all the staff, the standard and variety of food, the cleanliness throughout and the general ambience that made us feel like VIPs. We were welcome guests that were made to feel special by everybody at all times - thankyou for a wonderful experience.

Myself and my girlfriend stayed at the Baron Resort from the 14th to the 28th June. We were originally booked to stay at the Baron Palms next door, but on arrival at the airport, we were informed by our rep that we had been “upgraded” to the Baron Resort.

After booking our holiday back in Feb, we had constantly been checking Tripadvisor for reviews and tips for going to the Baron Palms and during this time we had seen that the Baron is rated as highly as the Palms so we need not fear when we were informed of the change.

Check-in

Check-in was very efficient, so efficient in fact that we hardly had time to drink our complimentary arrival drinks or for my girlfriend to be given her complimentary flower necklace. (Both of which were very nice touches).

Room

We were personally taken to our room by one of the reception staff. We were in room 503 which was on the right hand side of the hotel from the lobby. Upon arrival to our room we were asked if it was acceptable and that we were happy. Unfortunately the room was a twin room when we had booked a double, no problem though as they just put the beds together and made them up to become a “super” bed. We also asked for a mattress topper (The beds are quite hard) and for our mini-bar to be emptied. Both requests were dealt with promptly.

The room featured 2 settees and a desk with chair. It also has a CRT TV which has countless numbers of channels on. There aren’t many English channels but if you search through then you will find them. Each room also has a balcony with 2 chairs and a little table. They also feature a little clothes line to dry any clothes or bathing suits.

On the subject of the mini-bar, it is rather expensive and is not included in the standard all inclusive (nearly GBP£3 for a can of Pepsi). As stated above we asked for ours to be emptied, we were then able to use the fridge to store bottled water and our own snacks.

The bathroom was of good size and had just a shower (which we didn’t mind). I have seen some reviews saying that the showers leak. This is true, but only if you have the shower on full blast and the water hits the back of the shower enclosure.

Resort facilities & Beach

First and foremost, the resort is quite spotlessly clean. There are people cleaning from 7am in the morning until 8pm at night.

Unfortunately during our stay; the pool bar and restaurant was being refurbished, this lead to 2 main problems… 1) it limited our lunchtime food options and 2) the work seemed to mainly be taking place overnight and going on until 2 or 3am. Our room overlooked the pool / pool restaurant and we could hear the work happening at night. Luckily this did not affect our sleep as we were usually very tired at night, but I can see that it may have caused problems for lighter sleepers. I don’t really understand why the work to refurbish the restaurant couldn’t have taken place in a more off-peak season?

Also there seems to be some other building work around the resort which can be heard quite loudly when on the beach. Luckily our room was the opposite side of the resort to where the building work is taking place, but I would fully expect it to be heard in rooms nearer the works. I don’t know when this is due to finish, so I would check with your tour operator.

Between the 2 resorts (Baron Resort & Baron Palms) there is Baron Blvd. It features a few supermarkets along with other shops for souvenirs etc. (The watch shop has some very good looking “Replicas”) and a pharmacy.

The resort has a clinic which is visited by a Doctor daily (I believe) between 3pm & 4pm, although if you need a doctor more urgently then inform the guest services and they will assist by calling one out. I unfortunately had quite severe toothache (Wisdom teeth) while I was out there. I visited the clinic and managed to walk straight in to see the Doctor. I wasn’t sure of his English, (or to be honest, his credentials at first; seeing as he was dressed in a t-shirt and shorts and was casually sat back in his chair twirling his Alfa Romeo car keys around his finger when I entered to the room), so I told him that I needed antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory pain killer. He paused for one second then said “I take it you have toothache then?” (I guess he really was a qualified doctor!) He then wrote me out a prescription for some painkillers and an anti-imflammatory and also an antiseptic mouthwash. The pills cost me about £12 from the aforementioned pharmacy, which I didn’t think was too bad!

The lobby of the hotel offers a nice relaxing place to drink in the evening. The lobby is fully air-conditioned and has a bar and free wi-fi. We took full advantage of the wi-fi on the evenings to check emails and the latest news from back home. The waiting staff for the bar were usually quite attentive and like to make sure you are catered for. Another “feature” of the lobby is the live piano player who I believe was there every night. While there is no doubt she can play the piano well, it’s always the same set of songs every night and can get repetitive if you spend much time in there on an evening.

The resort features 2 pools. A large pool and a smaller sea water pool. Both pools are very nice and relaxing to be around, with the sea water pool a bit quieter. You are given towel cards for each guest in your room which are exchanged by the main pool for fresh towels. Unfortunately (as stated by other reviewers), people do like to “reserve” sunbeds around the pool. This can get quite ridiculous, especially when some people do not then return to their sunbed until past 2pm in the afternoon (by which time there are usually plenty of free sunbeds around). Luckily we hardly had a too much of a problem getting a sunbed by either pool, and any time we did we just went to the beach.

The beach is very good, with plenty of sun loungers covered by umbrellas. It is a mainly sand beach but as you approach the water it does get a bit rocky (I suggest you buy some beach shoes from Ebay before you go, or from one of the shops on Baron Blvd when you are there. They cost around £5 or less per pair.) Also they will help with the very hot sand on the beach. In the water itself it never gets very deep until you get to the coral reef about 50m out, but you cannot go out this far unless you walk along the jetty.

Unfortunately the Resort does have companies and salesmen who use the beach and you do occasionally get hassled. As other reviews have said, you can get a sign to hang on your sun lounger on the beach which is a “Do No Disturb” sign. While these usually do the job, occasionally you do still get hassled, my advice is just to say no thanks to them and point to the sign, they soon get the message. The resort staff do come round both on the beach and by the pool to offer sunglasses cleaning of a quick spray-down with cold, scented water (Very refreshing!).

The jetty takes you out to the deep water where you can snorkel. The snorkelling is one of Sham’s best assets with natural coral reefs and amazing fish to see. I definitely recommend either purchasing some equipment before you leave or from any of the shops on Baron Blvd when you get there. Also if you do any boat trips out and don’t have your own equipment, you will need to rent some which to be honest costs about the same as buying your own if you manage to haggle a good deal on some equipment in old-Sharm market.

Food & Drink

The Resort has several places to eat during the evenings: An international buffet, an Italian, an Egyptian, Indian, seafood and a BBQ restaurant. The international buffet has different themes every night including Mediterranean, Seafood, BBQ etc. Unfortunately we found that the food did get repetitive, but it was to be expected after 2 weeks of using the buffet for both Lunch & dinner. The main point about the buffet through is that you can always find something you can eat and enjoy. Plus you probably won’t want to eat as much because of the heat.

For breakfast there is a very good selection or Pastries, hot food (such as eggs (scrambled & poached), beef & chicken sausages, beef bacon (No pork as it’s a Muslim country)) as well as fresh fruit and other more random items (such as meatballs, cows liver, sushi etc). Unfortunately the “cold milk” for use with cereal etc. was never cold and resulted in very warm cornflakes in the morning.

For lunch and dinner it was hot food, mainly consisting of chicken, rice and potatoes. Not really much more to say about it, but you’re fine if you like combinations of those 3.

As mentioned before the Pool restaurant was closed for refurbishment, which we were not informed about by our holiday company (which wasn’t the hotel’s fault). This is probably why we got bored of the buffet restaurant as it was used for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The poolside restaurant was open for the last 2 days we were there and we used it on both days. It serves dishes such as burgers, pizza, toasted sandwiches etc. We found the food very good and were a bit gutted that it was closed for most of our stay.

The main problem we found with the Buffet restaurant was nuts! My girlfriend is severely allergic to nuts. Unfortunately, to our dismay, it seems the Egyptian chefs have some kind of fetish for putting nuts on almost all of their deserts. Also, with that many nuts being used in the kitchen, there was no way they could have guaranteed that the food that didn’t have nuts in had not been contaminated. This was severely disappointing as they did look delicious and am sure they would have been if they didn’t have nuts on them.

The other specialist restaurants need to be booked each day after 9am at the guest services desk. At times we booked after 11am and still managed to get a place in our chosen eating establishment for the evening.

We used the Italian restaurant several times and always found it brilliant. Ali the waiter in there was especially fantastic and always looked after us. So a very big thanks to him. Unfortunately the selection in the Italian is quite limited, either due to the lack of skills in Italian cuisine or due to the fact that I guess the hotel wouldn’t want people wanting to constantly eat there every night.

We also went to the BBQ restaurant once during our stay. Unfortunately we came away less than impressed. The meat was overcooked and the “trimmings” that came with the baked potato consisted just of some rather poor looking sour cream. Also, with the seating being outside, you are constantly battling the various flies, mosquitos and beetles that are flying around.

With regard to the drink… The “local” alcoholic drinks are quite rubbish and very strong. My girlfriend found that the wine was not that nice at the pool bar, but tasted better at the lobby bar. The beer is fine though and perfectly drinkable.

Staff

The staff, on the whole, were very good, always very helpful and wanting to please. There was only 1 time in the whole holiday where a member of staff blatantly held out for a tip. Unfortunately I don’t believe that coming to my room to essentially show me how to switch on a lightswitch deserves a tip. Unfortunately, standing by the door asking if you should leave will also not get you a tip. But apart from that 1 incident, there was never a time where I left inclined to tip any of the staff. That said; a little gesture of your appreciation now and again will go far.

The guy who cleaned our room (Didn’t get his name) was fantastic and always cleaned our room to a very high standard.

Other people who I must mention include Ibrahim in the Buffet Restaurant (I think there were 2 Ibrahim’s, both of which were fantastic), the Manager in the Buffet Restaurant (didn’t get his name), Ali in the Italian along with Mohammed S (Bar Manager) in the Beach & Pool bar. All these guys were brilliant and helped make our holiday that bit better.

Overall we did very much enjoy our stay at the Baron Resort. Where there is no question that it is a 5* in Egyptian standards I have given it 4* due to several bits and pieces mentioned above which counted against me giving a full 5* review.

Booked a double room at the Baron Resort and had it confirmed but was given a twin. Told there was no 'double rooms' available only had 'twins' throughout the hotel. Asked to see the Manager - spoke with Islam Rushdy, Acting Front Office Manager - not helpful one bit, in fact he argued more than helped !! spent almost a morning trying to sort a double room, not want you want on only a weeks holiday. Finally I had enough and mentioned Trip Adviser - then almost immediately a double room became available and guess what it was a room next to the twin we had been given not very amused after being told by him that they had no double rooms in the hotel !! Lots of guests upgraded from the Baron Palms - the sister Hotel who had paid much less anyway - seems very unfair that they were given upgrades when we were treated so badly and paid a lot more more. Hotel Managers should go out of their way to make sure that their guests are happy, so comments like these do not happen. Staff also not friendly, seem to have bad attitudes. The food was NOT 5 star lots of sloppy 'stew' like dishes - did not see fresh fish on the menu, and the only fresh fruit daily was melon - the graprefruit, peaches, pears etc were all out of tins !! not good. Also complained about some rice that was served at lunch time it smelt sour and was brown looking, it was merely taken away. At least 80% of the guests that we spoke to had stomach upsets, badly enough to warrant medication from the chemist. (me included). We will not be returning obviously and can honestly say that the food we were served has been the worst we have ever experienced in any of the 5 star hotels we have stayed in throughout the world !! Will definitely not be returning obviously.

have just arrived back home today from a two week stay in the baron hotel, Our holiday was organised by the holiday place booked online, when we arrived at the airport we were met by the rep and helped through immigration and taken to our transport, this was a very impressive start, we arrived at the hotel and were given a drink, cold towels, and welcomed with a very speedy check in. We were a little dissapointed with the view from our room as work was underway on the fountain and was boarded off so we looked out on the boards for two weeks although the room was in a convienient spot for the restaurants beach etc (room 120)
We soon found out that all inclusive does not mean everything as in other hotels we have stayed in, to get everthing included you need to be on premium all inclusive, we were very restricted at the bars with cocktails as there were only a few available to all inclusive customers,
We ate in the main restaurant most days and found the food very average, with the same theme nights the second week , we did go to the italian restaurant twice, this was very nice. The sevice in the restaurants was very good and we tipped accordingly
We had no trouble getting sunbeds at the beach or pool, somedays we didnt get to the beach until midday, we enjoyed the snorkeling especially off the pontoon the fish were aamzing
More seating is required in the lobby bar as we liked to sit here in the evening with a drink listening to the piano, we were often dissapointed as we could not get a seat and went back to our room as there was no other entertainment on site.
I would recommend the massage at th spa it was very relaxing.
We did have a good two weeks stay at the Baron, the weather was glorious, staff very friendly and helpful, the hotel is very clean, we will return again in the future
