“Value Winter Break”
Reviewed 5 January 2010

We went to Sharm in February this year (Renaissance Golden Beach Hotel) and liked it so much went back and stayed at ROBBR in December. The only problem we had was on arrival when we insisted on changing rooms from road side of block 5 to hotel side of block 5, this took a while but the staff at reception did their best for us. All the staff throughout the week were helpful, kind and polite, we had some very interesting conversations. The only rudeness we saw was, sadly, from a Brit to a waiter and was totally uncalled for. We followed the advice from a reviewer and took dollars to use for tips as Egyptian money is hard to get in smaller notes and very worn this was a really handy idea and will definately do it again next time, although staff are not on the lookout for tips, they treat everyone the same.

The gardens and pools are lovely ,very well kept. We particularly liked the Sea Breeze restaurant for lunch each day, in the evening to the buffet, to the Italian twice, to the Fish Restaurant once. Food was very varied and although drinks were served by the glass we never had to ask for a top up.

Entertainment? Um .....dire but did their best considering how many nationalities they were working with.

Can understand why anyone with walking difficulties would find the hotel awkward due to the expansive layout, however staff were very attentive to anyone who needed assistance with wheelchairs etc. especialy those at the adult pool, they really couldn't have done more to assist from what we saw.

The tennis courts are much better than some hotels we've been to, we used them twice, (the flood lighting can be a bit hit and miss!) The diving school was excellent Mark got his Dive Leader qualification some years ago and decided to update his log book, he had tuition plus two dives with the school. The receptionist, tutors and assistants were excellent, very careful and rang to check our flights to make sure he would be safe to complete the dives he chose. Much better value than dive schools in Europe. Snorkelling from the jetty is very good, would suggest that its best not to be tempted to go in from the shore ( life guards will stop you) due to the shallow water there, several people got minor cuts on the coral.

We've been to Naama Bay before and didnt go again this time but would recommend a visit there especially at night ,also if you like local colour visit the Old Town it's less brash and more eccentric than Naama Bay. We did go on the Stars at Night/Bedouin/Desert/Camel excursion, this was a little tame and certainly, as only 10 minutes off the main road, not as genuine desert as expected!

Its hard to find fault with this hotel, its not 5* , its not 5* prices either . We were a little worried about going to a 600+ room hotel, there was no need , it never felt crowded and the variety in pools, gardens, restaurants, bars, sports, mean you can be as active or as chilled as you want to be. As a value winter break with short flight and guaranteed sun its hard to beat.

Before we went on our holiday I read a few bad reviews and was a bit worried about where we had booked. There was no need. The hotel has the most amazing views and the grounds are kept lovely.
We had a junior suite. well worth the upgrade for the extras, free late checkout ( we were given a different room as ours was booked) free laundry bag, a seperate dinning room for breakfast and free fruit juice in the morning which you do have to pay for in the main dinning area. Its also worth trying the other resturants on site which you have to book in advance, and the kebab grill is always a more relaxing choice to the main buffet.
There are lots of different areas in thehotel to suit everyone, adult only pools, pools with slides for the kids and a lovely reef just on the beach.
All the hotel staff were very helpfull and did'nt hassle you for tips, we were told to tip at the end of the stay which did save trying to find small notes.
The hotel also has a privte taxi firm working for them we found they charged the same as the local taxis which are not aloud on site so they drop you off outside. They would also take you around the shops if you wanted any help of take you to the main tourist sites which colud be cheaper then booking the trips if you could fill the car and split the cost.
If you like to drink a certain spirit such as tia maria take it with you as the imported drinks were very expensive, around £4.00! if not then the local beer and vodka is always on tap 24 /7 !

On arrival the hotel is a bit daunting as it seems huge. I recomend taking your map (given on arrival) and walking around to get your bearings. The map is not up to date but does help. There is a free bus to take you around the resort if you prefer not to walk everywhere.

We did book to eat in the fish restaurant and also the italian. Both were excellent. You can pay extra for certain items eg lobster but we didn't bother. We ate everywhere except the french restaurant and we had no upset stomachs and we ate a wide range of food.

The egyptian money is filthy and is best handled at little as possible. It is also very hard to get change.

The staff are fantastic and have a great sense of humour. We tipped only on the last day as advised. In the bay view restaurant , there is a waiter called Sami. We always sat in his corner of the restaurant and he was brilliant. The bar tender in the caribean bar can do amazing magic tricks, he kept us entertained for hours. This is the bar to go to to see the sunset about 5pm.

The one thing I wasn't prepared for was the snorkelling. It is excellent and I could not believe how many different species you can see at the hotel jetty. We saw the shark on our last day and I have to say it was incredible to see it, I felt very lucky and was grinning for the rest of the day. We bought snorkels out there but I wish we had bought them in the uk as it would have been cheaper. I didn't want to hire any as they looked filthy and others complained that they didnt always fit very well.

We only went on 2 trips, the VIP cruise on christmas day and the submarine tour. The VIP cruise gave us the opportunity to snorkel in 3 other locations and all three were excellent. We saw stingrays and eels as well as all the beautiful shoals of fish. We also had a lovely buffet. They taught us what fish to avoid as they are poisonous and also gave us a lesson in snorkelling, both were very valuble. I definately recomend both trips.

The nightlife is non existant except for the arena bar wich puts a nightly show on. The rocky horror was good but for a better choice of entertainment it is best to go into Naama Bay. You can use the hotel shuttle bus or get a taxi , its 10 mins away.

We are already planning our next trip there and next time we will do the diving course. Everyone we spoke to who went on the course loved it.

By the way, it was very hot 36 degrees on our last day.

Just came back from two weeks at the Reef Oasis and have to agree with many of the comments. The hotel is spotlessly clean, I have never come across beach loos that are so clean. The crew are working all the time.

The food - Good selection, but there are issues with warmth. However, I recommend that you try the soups as they are some of the best we have ever tasted. Tried the El Dente restaurant, I stuck to the 'all inclusive' menu but my husband had a meal at an additional cost and to be honest he would have been better of sticking to the 'all inclusive menu'.

This hotel is just how it lucks in the brochure, but what makes this hotel is its staff. Nothing is too much trouble and all are polite and welcoming and this includes the gardeners and engineers.

It has an excellent beach with plenty of sunbeds and a choice of restaurants for eating during the day.

The best part of the holiday was New Year's Eve - what a night. A marquis had been erected, santa was there to greet you along with staff and photographers (I now know how movie stars feel when the paparazzi are about). The interior was stunning with everything you could want for a party and it was done out absolutely beautiful. Considering they catered for so many people the selection of food was excellent, and once again the staff made the evening with their attentiveness.

We enjoyed ourselves so much, we will never spend Xmas in England again.

I would certainlty recommend this hotel.

My Wife and I (40's) Stayed at the Blue Bay between 7th and 17th of December 2009 with Thompsons Platinum.

We have both travelled widely over the years but we had never been to Egypt before so the whole thing was a bit of an adventure. What we learned I will share below.

The hotel in general was fine - not a european standard 5* but ok none the less.
The service in the Restaurants etc was good and to be fair if you leave a few quid tip the service is excellent on future visits. This is a big hotel catering for lots of people of different nationalities - dont expect the world and you wont be disappointed. We had no difficulties waiting for tables or drinks. The grounds are fantastic and the majority of the staff are lovely and helpful (and not all just for tips) I would advise however that when you are in your room put ado not disturb sign on the door at all times (it stops little visits just to check everything is OK)

The Room (5125) - Ok this was disappointing, It was big enough and reasonably comfy however it was not spotlessly clean on arrival and in general it was cleaned adequately during our stay. Being on the groundfloor it had a terrace however this was north facing so no sun at all, it was 15ft from the main hotel driveway so was noisy at all times. It had no view as there was a 8ft hedge 10ft in front to mask the driveway and there was the often mentioned smell of sewage pretty much all the time. We phoned reception immediately and requested a change but were told there was nothing available. We then spoke to the Thompson Rep who went to reception for us, we were asked to check back at reception at 3pm the following day to see if anything else was available. Now here's the thing - this hotel is massive and in order to run efficiently they must know at anytime what rooms will become available and when. So I dont understand why we had to wait until the following day (having not unpacked in case we were to move) to be told that the only rooms available to us of the same standard that we had booked had no terrace at all. However it would appear that there were vacant rooms of a better standard available but we were not offered one of these. Although I found reception in general to be unhelpful throughout our stay, my main issue here is with Thompson.... The problems with some of the rooms at this hotel are repeated time and time again on this site but they choose not to use their influence at the hotel to ensure that their guests are not allocated to these rooms.

The Pools - for some reason the hotel had chosen to heat only one pool during our stay and consequently this was like kid soup for most of our stay. The remaining 4 pools we visited were freezing and in 10 days I only saw half a dozen people use them. The sea however is nice and warm and snorkling of the reef here is like swimming in an aquarium just fantastic. One tip however is that if you intend to swim in the sea you must enter off the jetty not from the beach. If the hotel bothered to put up signs to this effect it would save the lifeguards blowing there whistles every few minutes.

Shopping - to be honest just dont ! .... buy fags etc duty free on your way out... Yes I am sure there are bargains to be had but unless you enjoy hagging over everything and taking 15 minutes just to agree a price for 20 cigs just dont bother - sorry just not my bag and the hotelshops are just a rip off (double UK prices), things are slightly better at Nama Bay.

Money - You dont need egyptian money and I never saw any in 10 days. Egyptian notes are filthty and often the source of illness also getting small demominations is impossible so apparenty you often dont get change from shops- my top tip would be to take 1 and 5 US Dollar Bills (60p and £3 approx) as the scope for being short changed is far less.

Illess - not a problem at all - We ate salads and had ice in drinks no problem used bottled water in the kettle and brushing teeth - we didn't touch the money and we carried a sterilizing gel with us every where.

Outside the hotel - from themoment you arrive to the moment you leave remember nothing is done for free. If you dont want it say no and dont be intimidated. One guy at the airport tried to walk off with my case until I paid him to give it back until I just grabbed it and pushed him away.

Onece we settled into our room and got on with our holiday we had a great time.

I would particularly recommend the Sea Breeze restaurant for breakfast (take your bag for the day and go straight down to the beach afterwards).

Dear Guest,
Happy New year to you, and thank you for your comments.
I wish to clarify some of the points you’ve highlighted. It is indeed an adventure 1000 and one night’s?? Well I agree, it isn’t Europe. It’s Africa and this is Egypt, different cultures, a country with history and plenty of sun. And by the way, I’m not Egyptian.
Having the opportunity to have worked in Europe, I must add a quid or two helps over there as well; the difference is it’s more appreciated in this part of the world. I tipped €5.00 to a bellman most recently while on holidays in the EU and I was given a dirty look, out here they will be pleased and grateful for €1.00. Of course we talking different cultures
I was surprised with the comment made regarding the cleaning, and the reason been, is that we normally score very high. Please do accept our apology if we failed to deliver what was expected. The area with the sewage plant is from our neighboring Hotel and we are taking some steps with our owning company to relocate the plant, to be exact it affects 12 out of our 700 odd rooms. Once again I regret that the response wasn’t fast enough to relocate you to another room and leave you with a better impression of our reception services.
The Shops within the resort are leased and have nothing to do with the hotel, however they are within the resort therefore it does damage our image. I have spoken with the tobacco shop owner to review his prices, they charge £3.00 per packet of 20s, the reason I’m mentioning the price, it was mentioned the shops were charging double?? I don’t think that the cost of a packet of cigarettes in the UK is £ 1.50?
The notes I agree, some look rather tired. Don’t visit India if you’re concerned with local notes...
We thank you once again and we all look forward to welcome you back to Sharm and to your resort. Kind regards the management
