We stayed at the Sofitel Hotel and booked this trip directly on the beach at the diving center hut next to the beach bar. My wife was not very keen on going on a quad bike so we opted for the Drifter. This was a fantastic experience and we had great fun. The Drifter is a two man buggy type of vehicle, like something off Mad Max. The quad bike/drifter center is only about 10 minutes from the Sofitel Hotel, so no long bus journeys involved. We were picked up and taken back to the hotel by minibus. The trip only lasts a couple of hours, so you won't miss out on any sunbathing. We set off in the drifter following our guide Sharif, who was an amazing guide. One big advantage of going on the Drifter is that the passenger can film or take pictures of the trip and all the amazing scenery and sights. You set off on the trip with the quad bikers, but also get the opportunity to go off ahead of the pack with your guide leading the way, enabling you to really get your foot down. You have a couple of stop offs to take pictures and have drinks served as part of the deal. The sights you see are fabulous, like a mini grand canyon. It is one of the most fun trips we have done and we will definitely be doing the trip again if we go back to Taba. At the end of the trip you get the chance to hurtle round a dirt track circuit which is great fun. Prepare to get dusty and dirty but you will have a great fun experience. Note though that you do need a full driving licence and be over 18 for the Drifter.

We have 3 girls of 12, 14 & 14. We couldn't book this through our Thomson Rep as you had to be 16, so we were a little concerned when the Canyon Safari rep was very willing to book us in - but we eventually booked the trip, having spent 2 weeks in the Taba Heights complex and needing to get out! Sure enough when you get there the ATVs say 'not to be operated by those under 16' on a warning sticker on every machine. We shouldn't have worried. The guides - we had one to our group of five - were very good at helping the girls get started, and controlling the speed of the journey to their abilities. As it was, they loved it, especially the 12 year old. Safety equipment was provided including helmets, goggles, gloves and pads. I should mention that my ATV broke down near the start, but a replacement was sent out within 5 minutes. Clearly the ATVs are used every day, and get quite a pounding, so don't expect shiny or new, but apart from my minor problem everything else worked fine. The Canyon goes deep into the mountains, and the colours and rock shapes were great to look at, especially in the afternoon sun. The stops were timed well for included drinks - do try the sweet tea. On the journey back we went what felt quite fast, and the 'test-circuit' at the end is great fun. Most of all the staff were really friendly, very helpful and flexible. We would definitely recommend this activity to others staying in Taba.

We did two different trips on consecutive days- both were excellent. Talk to Haytham at the Safari Tours desk by the bank if you're staying at the Intercontinental!

1) the Jeep Safari to the Coloured Canyon (about 6 hrs). This is simply spectacular- there are layers of minerals that give the naturally carved rock the appearance of marbling in blue, black, red and yellow- truly beautiful! But be warned- the trip requires around 2 hours of jumping, climbing, shimming down rocks and sliding; it's an action adventure that is not for the faint-hearted or those with mobility issues (like bad knees, the overweight, ankle problems, etc.)

2) Quad biking (2 hours): go at 8am or 3pm to avoid the heat as far as possible. You'll be wearing a safety helmet so you're protected from sunstroke (and you can also use knee pads, elbow pads and gloves), but you will be out in the open so may get hot very quickly. I didn't take the gloves and my hands got very dirty so it might be an idea to take them.

Visited the Canyon on our trip to Taba Heights in June 2011. At the time there were three sessions per day, we chose the 8am session so as to go before the heat of the day kicked in. This turned out to be the best choice as it was just the two of us along with the guide who took us on our bikes through the canyon. We were picked up directly from our hotel and given a quick run through of the bikes, crash helmets and off we went. Because it was just us, the guide (can't remember his name) stopped several times and took photos of us as well as giving us an extended run around the track at the end. highly recommended and good value for money

An entertaining two hour, the trip among the desert mountains is very nice, but not stunning. I recommend it for the ATV fun mostly, especially for beginners. Friendly and professional staff. A bit expensive.
