We have just returned from a week in Sofitel, this was our first holiday abroad together as a couple and also our first time to Egypt after being recommended by a friend.
The service provided by all staff was excellent, they will do as much for you as possible without invading your holiday, the bar staff were attentive even when the bar was busy and by the end of the week some of them knew what we were drinking.
We had a room in block 3 which was a garden view room, it also overlooked the sea which was an added bonus for us, our block was quiet with no disturbance once you are in your room and within a short walk of the main bars and pools. The room was spacious and cleaned every day with new towels, halfway through the week we received a huge fruit bowl and some chocolates, water was put in the room every day and available throughout the hotel also.
For us the location of Sofitel was perfect, right by the beach and all other hotels within 5-10 minutes walk, the shuttle bus service running around taba heights is frequent and easy to use and is provided for free. 'Uptown' is basic but has all the souvenir shops, pharmacy and a few nice restaurants which are worth a look at, our Longwood rep recommended the 'festival' which is held on a Friday night in the town, this is not a typical egyptian festival if that is what you may expect, it is very british but enjoyable nonetheless.
We are not particularly fussy eaters but we were both very impressed with the selection of food available at the hotel every day. The choice was vast and the cooking stations provide fun fresh meals too. Overall food is available as part of the all inclusive package from about 5.30am to 12.30am. The Lotus pool bar on 2 occasions produced an 8 foot sandwich for all the guests, in addition to their daily fresh made pizzas and other hot snacks such as fries and some local foods. The Aladdin always kept their foods topped up and would serve you water and drinks to your table.
Unfortunately we did suffer slightly with stomach problems however this did not stop us doing anything we wanted to but had to be fairly close to the toilet, this was only for the last part of our holiday, having returned I have researched and discovered 'travellers diarrhoea' on the NHS direct site, it's worth a look. It would not put us off travelling to this hotel or area again.
We booked 2 excursions through Longwood holidays, they were the camel trek with bedouin dinner and also 2hr quad biking through the mountains. Both trips were amazing, the guides were excellent and fantastic value for money. There are occasions where you do need to tip the locals however on nearly all of these occasions we felt it was worth it.
The only thing we could say we didn't like (and we are clutching at straws) is that the 'warm' pool isn't very warm, the sea is quite warm though and very shallow for quite a way out.
The weather was fantastic for late November with average of about 25-30 degrees.
