“Movenpick Hotel Taba - In a word, Paradise.”
Reviewed 20 August 2009

PART ONE

I arrived back in the UK on the 18th August, after a week at the Movenpick Hotel, Taba.
In one week I went from being a complete Egypt 'virgin', to somebody who is already planning their second trip back there! This is totally down to this fabulous hotel.

We landed at Taba airport at night, after a decent, yet slightly lengthly flight from Manchester. After a speedy passport check and luggage claim we were guided to our waiting coaches, numbered 1-20. Once loaded up, the convoy of coaches left the airport for the various hotels. The journey to the hotel was an interesting one, as I have never been part of a police-escorted coach convoy, doing a good 60mph through a pitch black desert!

After 35mins we arrived at our hotel, and what a sight! The hotel looks stunning at night, like nothing you will ever see in Europe. Upon the entrance to the lobby every new arrival was greeted with a cool drink and a damp face cloth by smiling staff.

Check in went fine, and we were soon being led to our room on the 2nd floor by a very polite member of staff. However, when we arrived in our room we were greeted by another couple, who appeared to be in our room already! The staff member was mortified and clearly very embarrassed, as by accident the hotel had put two couples in the same room! He apologised profusely and took us back to reception where he said he would find us a new room and something 'special'. Luckily myself and my girlfriend are very laid back and patient people, but I can see how the whole situation could infuriate some people, thus creating a bad start to the holiday. He soon emerged from reception with a new room key, and off we went, this time to the 3rd floor. Unknown to us he had swapped our original 'delux' room for a 'junior suite' as a way of saying sorry for the hotel's mix up. You can imagine myself and my girlfriend's amazement at being shown our new room - as it was twice the size of the first, with a massive bathroom, sitting room area and stunning views of the hotel grounds, the Red Sea and Saudi Arabia!

This pretty much set the scene for the rest of the holiday, as we were continuously impressed with the hotel and what it had to offer.

There is no doubt that the staff at the hotel are more than excellent, you can not fault any of them. They are very helpful, with a nice smile that makes you feel at ease.

The restaurant area needs improvement. They apponited chap called "Anil" 2 days before the end of our holiday. Since then, guests noticed few good things happening. Drinks comes quicker, soup is hot! health and safety issues are observed..etc. what is more important is that he was communicating with guests asking for comments and feedback! This was great thing to see at the hotel where guests feel (and they have every right for that) they are in a high street restaurant.

I think the resort was in DISPARATE need for someone like Anil who understand the western mentality.
What we would like to see improving is the food. There are plenty of varieties but the taste in the food does not exist. We travel to Egypt 3 times a year, so we know what to expect, including night entertainment. I hope the managment will work on that part.
But we 100% recommend the hotel to families. We visted the Hilton next door, food was better, but the Movenpick resort and the beateful green ground was far much nicer than the Hilton. We highly recommed it. You will love it. Oh, do not forget the "Beach Camel ride". Children loved it.

Having just returned from the Movepick hotel, Taba in Egypt, for the first time ever i feel i must do a holiday review. We did have a couple of problems but nothing that spoilt our holiday. One initial worry we had was when we checked in and found there was an evening dress code which had started two weeks before. This required men to wear long trousers and polo shirts, my husband was wearing the only ones he had! However in the welcome meeting the next morning, our rep Jo informed us that long shorts below the knee and sleeved t shirts would be allowed.
Our rep Jo gave an excellent welcome talk, the best i've ever been to. Another impressive feature - the whole management team including restaurant, reception, pool and housing keeping management were introduced. Later we were impressed that they continuously made themselves available checking there were no problems.
Our rooms were impressive, next to each other as requested and even though we had the mountain view it didn't bother us. The rooms were kept immaculately clean, tidy and restocked each day with fresh towels and water. Our second day we found the Seashell restaurant by the beach and never ventured anywhere else for the next two weeks. The staff were friendly, funny and very attentive. Hardly anytime we were left without a drink. The food was good and even though our daughter is vegetarian she managed to eat well as there was always salad and fresh pasta. They were also willing to cook anything on request if there was nothing you liked.
We would like to thank the Seashell staff - Mr Ahmed, Sheriff, Ahmed, Essam, Mohamed and Ali.
If you are ever unfortunate enough to need to visit the doctor on holiday you could'nt go far wrong with the doctor and nurse at the Movenpick. My husbands back locked when he was by the pool and he could'nt move. Two days later, after four injections, massage and strong tablets and a lot of laughs he was almost as good as new. If it was'nt for the Dr Walid Attia Mohamed and the nurse our holiday would have been ruined. Thanks to them both.
The one regret i had was not going over the boarder to Elat. However our memories of the Movenpick Taba were all good, and we had a great holiday thanks to the staff.

I don't quite know where to start, the holiday for myself is quite a mixed bag, went to Egypt with quite an open mind staying at the movenpick, reading the squillion reviews on here ended up feeling a little dubious beforehand not knowing quite what to expect, but most of the reviews were pretty accurate if not varied to my own personnal experience, i thought i'd write my review while everything was still fresh in my mind so it litterally is hot off the press as i only got back 3 days ago, hope this helps anyone and everyone whos due to go in the coming months.

Hotel grounds are very well kept by the many gardeners on a daily basis, they deserve a medal in the midday heat as do all the staff, lifegaurds, outside barstaff, animation team, in July under an umbrella it's pretty intense, despite the heat the staff carry on regardless, smiling and are very happy and will always chat and say hello, the first few days you begin to adjust to the heat, im so thankful for air con in the room, i couldn't imagine being without it.

I really only have a few gripes about the movenpick which has been mentioned in many review so ill only touch lightly on it and thats when you go to relax and really wish to just chill in the sun round the pool or wherever the last thing you want is to be pestered by people from the spa pedalling treatments, during one day i counted 10+ times, praying on the new comers hoping for a sell (as they work on commission) you also have men selling coloured sand in jars, doing several circuits of the pool, then the english newspaper/magazine man, aqua aerobics people, the volley ball people and the hair braiding and henna tattoo people so eventually as you can imagine after 2 weeks it begins to grate on the old nerves, if you lay completely still pretend your asleep with sunglasses on they tend to leave you be, i found.

The room service was utterly useless, not sure if hed woke up in a mood on certain days but his service was very intermitent, im not sure if it was part of the job or whether he had OCD but he often lined all the toiletries in size order, apparantly the bed sheets were changed every other day, but my mattress cover was on for at least 5 days, i gave up counting in the end, one day he took the plug and didnt return it, flannels went and never came back, the bath matt dissapeared.

I think the most popular talked about topic at the movenpick is the food and the dreaded 'Taba tummy' or 'Movenpick motions' as i referred to it as, i came down with it 5 days into the holiday, but quite easily mistook it for heatstroke, but in preperation im soooo glad i bought the medication out there on day 2, so i was very well prepared as i dont think id have made it to the pharmacy if you catch my drift, many people holidaying there got it on day 3 and 4 so it can strike anytime, some even had it on the plane on the way home BE WARNED, it's just one of those things, chances are you will get it and the tablets get shut of it more or less within half a day to a day (a tablet to be taken every 6 hrs) i didnt finish the full course i was ok after 5 tablets, i wouldnt wish it on anyone though :(

Still on the topic of food, eating in the main movenpick restaurant everynight, yes it is very much a cattle market, to avoid the rush go and eat when it first opens, understandable not everyone wants to do that but at peak times, you will have everything from rude eatern europeans to no seats to contend with. The food on the second week mirrored the first week, chips was only available 3 times in 2 weeks (good or bad depending on how you like chips) rice available everynight, plenty of dishes with sauces, pasta a plenty, veg, watch for the meat in some dishes tends to be on the pink side, huge selection of bread and rolls, salads, deserts (mainly coconut and syrupy sweet things) soups and meat joints most nights. The waiters were very laxidasicle with drinks, i recieved drinks i hadnt ordered, if your waiting more than 5 mins for drinks ask again chances are you wont get them and in a hot country like Egypt they bring you the tinyest glasses in the world when all you want is a huge thirst quenching drink, [--]

The new first choice rep Jo is lovely, the guys in Pharaohs bar (hotel bar) are good, some more than others, only one guy serving drinks when busy and more often than not there will be someone stood watching while the queue gets longer, not going to mention queues, but no not every nation will do this, annoying yes but if you dont say something when it happens then you dont have the right to be annoyed, so dont moan if you let them, rant over!

Any seashells or coral found in the sea or the beach cant be brought back to the uk when you get to taba airport they will fine you £500-£1000 if found so dont bother, not worth it. You do get 2 bottles of water a day from housekeeping when your room is cleaned, if this is not enough you can buy bigger bottles from the bar in the lobby, 18-20 E£ try give them righ money as theyll say they dont have change and pocket the difference im sure.

IF YOU WANT A SUN LOUNGER AROUND THE POOL OR BEACH BE PREPARED TO PUT A TOWEL OUT AS EARLY AS 6:30!!! yes this applies even in Egypt, even though the towel guys in their little huts who are'nt supposed to work till 8am, you get there and see them putting towels out saving beds which states in the beach rules on big boards is not prohibited along with topless bathing, so yes get up early if you want a decent lounger, you can always go back to bed for a few hours at least you know you have a bed for the day, 7am onwards you may struggle to get a bed

Theres so much to write and i feel like ive been writing forever, if theres anything you would like to know message me ill be happy to help to the best of my experience at the movenpick.

If anyone was at the Movenpick between 21/07/09 to 04/08/09 a BIG helloo to you all and does anyone know if Cath the very tanned lady that broke her leg in the last week is ok??

Ill be adding photos at a later date :) hope everyone has a lovely time for those going for the first time :)

1ST CLASS - that's the bottom line for Movenpick, Taba. Excellent staff, faultless manners and totally 100% helpful.

As we reviewed extensively beforehand (as we always do), there were no surprises.
Basic, straight forward, common sense tells me to read between the lines of other reviews. RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH.

We are worldwide travellers and found other guests ignorance in some cases ridiculous, even though most 'COMPLAINERS' were supposed to be experienced travellers as well. They very much let themselves down and in some cases embarrassed England as a nation.....quite strong accusations I know, but deserved!

Why would a family of four go home a week early and pay an extra £400 to change their tickets? SAD. PATHETIC.
Or, as we decided there was more to it, marital problems probably. We avoided them after only one meeting, as they seemed very dramatic and exaggerate every little complaint. I think most of them liked the sound of their own voice.

Other guests were also beyond a joke when complaining, the list could go on and on.
I felt like telling them to get a life.
Ok, it's not a Premier Hotel, but my goodness me, staff did try.

We had one the of the best holidays here with our 10 year old son, and he is of the same opinion.

Travelled independantly to Eliat for a day - great shopping and cracking beach music.

I struggled to make any suggestions/improvements whilst taking 5 mins to fill in their review at checkout. Some outdoor bar stools for the pool bar. That was it.

Special thanks to MINA! at the small pool bar - great guy, will go far.
Special thanks to MAI at reception - beautiful lady with a warm smile.

Come on people - expect too much and you will be disappointed - be realistic and have an awesome holiday here!

We stayed in Movenpick Taba for a week and had a fantastic time there, but we would advise not to book with First Choice, if you can help it.

The hotel is in a quiet but beautiful surrounding, with a stunning view of blue sea, overlooking Jordan and Saudi Arabia. The coral reef between Hilton and Movenpick is amazing, full of tropical fish of every colour. It is just a few metres’ away from the beach, and the best snorkelling place for families.

The staff members were all welcoming, especially the manager Ibrahim Hegazy did everything he could to accommodate us. First, we were given a ground-floor room we did not want (not the hotel’s fault but First Choice’s; I will describe it later). It was clean, had a nice view, but it was close to the main restaurant and very noisy. So with a small supplement, we moved to a bungalow, which was really worth it. It was spacious with a private entrance, a separate pool and 30 seconds to the sea. The view from the window was marvellous.

We went for an all-inclusive package, and the food was better than we had expected. There was always something we liked, and it was varied every day. The main restaurant was always very busy, and consequently the waiters are sometimes not attentive. We would recommend another quieter restaurant, Seashells, which also serves chips every day for British and French! The waiter Ahmed was always smiley, ushered us to our favourite table, and remembered our favourite drinks. You can also eat a set menu in another stylish restaurant Shahrazad for free, and we would also recommend that, but beware: the number of free set menus is limited and they go quickly. Go to the customer relation desk between 10:30 and 12:00 to book your place.

Although we took precautions like taking probiotic tablets, cleaning hands with antiseptic gel frequently, brushing teeth and rinsing the toothbrush with mineral water, we were not lucky enough to escape ‘Taba Tummy’. My wife fell ill on the 3rd night, and my son and I on the 4th day. However, our symptom was quite mild, and after taking Antinal tablets, we got better after half a day or one day, and it did not spoil our fun. It seems many people from the West do not have a resistance to this bug, so as soon as the first symptom appears, take the local medicine like Antinal, and it works straight away. Otherwise, your holiday will be ruined. Our tip: the pharmacy in Hilton rips you off, charging LE 30 for a packet of Antinal. Go to a pharmacy in a small hotel called Taba Sand, opposite Hilton on the main road and 3 minutes’ walk from Movenpick. The concierge will happily tell you how to get there. The pharmacist is an Anglophile, so say you’re British: we got two packets for LE20!

Some Tripadvisors complained about the bad manners of East Europeans, but I have also seen our fellow British queue-jumping at the main restaurant and at the airport, standing on the coral reef and feeding the fish to take photos. (When I pointed out they were not supposed to feed the fish, I was simply told to ‘get lost’; actually, it was in a much ruder language.) It is simply that every nationality has its own share of bad-mannered people.

Finally, avoid First Choice. When booking, the sales rep recommended us to upgrade to the Deluxe room with sea view, with extra cost, and did not mention that families with children, even teenagers, are allocated with a ground floor room only. We realised that after we contacted the hotel. Again, Ibrahim was kind enough to offer a room on the 3rd floor, but the First Choice agent in Egypt did not endorse it, claiming the balcony does not meet the ‘EU safety standard’. (I thought Movenpick was, although not EU, a Swiss hotel of high standard, and when we got there, there was no problem with the balcony.) First Choice did not mention this regulation at the time of booking, and instead of apologising, the agents we contacted in Britain said they were not aware of it and we had to go back and forth between British and Egyptian agents for many days. To be fair with them, the new Taba rep, Joe, was very efficient and helpful, but that is the only good thing about them.

Booked the holiday in jan for my mums 40th birthday treat.
Ate at the main restaurant twice and then sea shells for the rest of the two weeks, the food did get boring as it was the same every day however the service by sherif and team was excellent. Ice cream is not free which seems silly when its a movenpick resort.
My boyfriend got ill on the first day and went to pharmacy outside the hilton for medication, then my sister who is eight got ill and then me and my mum, you darent leave your room incase you cant get to the toilet. Still ill now 3days after return.
Kids club was the other side of the resort near the entrance so we didnt leave my sister there, however there was a disco at night for them.
There is nothing to do there at all unless you spend a fortune on excursions so only go for a total relax. Leave the resort if you dare as there is a cheaper gift shop down the road half the price of the shops in the hotel.
Clean everywhere in hotel always gardening! however room was not very clean smudge on mirror on second day there when we left.
A concierge took a liking to mum as she as she was on her own, every day he came up to us and and whispered sexual referencesto her which we found very unerving, he took this further by following us around the reception area. The next day following us down to the corridor where i room was so we kept walking so he didnt know our room. This really upset my 8 year old sister as she couldnt understand why we were walking past our room not going in it! He then the next day came to my mums room at 22.15 knocking on the door, it freaked her out as he was trying the door. when she came to our room later upset my boyfriend was angry an went to reception to complain they didnt believe him, so we had to speak to a manager who didnt believe it so we then spoke to a higher manager who did believe us and said he would take action against him, we didnt see the stalker the last day. Most of the staff are ery pervy and slimey with inappropriate comments but you get used to it.
Beach is stoney so buy beach shoes, spa and salesman roam the beach so beware as the bug you at least twice a day. If you want a sunbed you have to reserve them by 7.30 or you wont get one, however it says on signs you cant reserve but the staff arent bothered. We sat on 2 loungers on the last day and then the towel man came up to us with2 women who claimed they had reserved the sunbeds we were on ad so we had to move even though it was 11.30 and we had been on them since 9 so the rules change all the time.
Airport was terrible not enough seats, toilets filthy no paper, no announcements for flights and our plane was delayed by an hour so we sat wondering what was going on. There was notegyptian culture really you could be anywhere.
However there were good points! weather amazing, camels, snorkelling, glass bottom boat, spa treatment although it was pricey.
Overall go for a total relax without kids and dont go if your a single woman (seriously).
A total letdown for us, waste of money if you wan to got ot egypt sharm is better.
