“Fantastic Piece of Paradise!!”
Reviewed 11 October 2006

This is a fantastic place to stay - if you are a diver. For non-divers there is little to do - except enjoy the ambience - of which there is plenty. There is no beach in front of the resort - but a short kayak paddle away is a beautiful small island with a great beach. The resort staff was extremely friendly, very helpful, and seemed genuinely pleased we were visiting them - I would not hesitate to return. The atmosphere was relaxing and fun. The staff would spend time with us in the evenings around the kava bowl playing music and giving everyone a chance to experience a different culture. It is what a vacation should be.

The on-site dive facilities are very good - very accomodating - the dive staff was one of the best I have experienced. They were very knowledgable, very friendly, very helpful - they would do everything for us - or nothing for us - depending on what we as divers wanted.

The diving on the Rainbow Reef in the Somasoma Straight was probably the best warm water diving I have ever experienced. I will definitely return.

  • Liked — The easy access to Scuab Diving
  • Disliked — The lack of beach
  • Tips/Secrets — Pack very light - there is a stirngent weight limit on the inter-island aircraft

If you are looking to experience Fiji, all i can say is that Garden Island resort was a total Fijian experience. This was my second trip to Garden Island. Foremost, the diving in the Soma -Soma Straight is the most beautiful diving I've ever done. The dive staff is very knowledgable of the local reefs and are quick to point out rare creatures throughout the dive. The resort staff was very friendly and accommodating, sharing the Fijian spirit. My room was very comfortable with a beautiful view of the ocean that my girlfriend fell in love with. At night there is a local acoustic band that plays Fijian music under the light of the moon, while you get to take in a bit of local culture, the drinking of kava. On the days I didn't dive there was some great hiking to beautiful waterfalls near by. But for the most part when I wasn't diving I just relaxed by the pool overlooking the Soma-Soma Straight.

  • Liked — the overall comfort that i felt
  • Tips/Secrets — there is a lady that has a cafe that serves coffee and the most unreal desserts overlooking the ocean through palm trees while the sun sets

This is my first review and let me tell you the Garden Island Resort (GIR) was great. It is a small resort about a 25min drive from the airport. My father and I went as a graduation present and had not expectation except for excellent diving.
I will start with the diving. It was incredible drift diving, with amazing sea life, corals, fish, sharks, eel, sea snakes, etc. The staff was great, and the dive intervals took place on a secluded beach on the neighboring large island.
We choose the meal plan, and it worked out great, the chef was great, and the diversity was enough to keep us interested for the trip. The rooms were nice, no bugs, great housekeeping, and they all had a good view of the ocean. By the second day everyone on staff knew our names, and they were very helpful. On a side note the airlines lost all of our dive gear and the resort owner was nice enough to lone my dad his mask since the resort masks didn't fit. The resort staff mad a lot of phone calls to help us get one of the bags back. The pool was nice, and the local band that shares kava, and music was pleasant. The staff is composed of local villagers, and they offer a tour and food experience of there village that can't be missed. This isn't some mass produced Hawaiian Luau, but a real view into their culture and life, in a real village. We made friends with all the other divers in no time, and in the middle of the week the resort put on a full wedding for the couple including a dance performance by the staff and a special meal. The couple invited everyone at the resort (there are about 30 rooms and half were not full), and we had a really good time. It was beautiful, I will enclose a picture.
The resort had several day trips, we went to the waterfalls, it is 2hour trip well worth the time and the experience of seeing some of the other sides of the island life. Wear your hiking shoes, and a swimsuit. Take a walk to the international dateline, and visit Somo Somo for shopping.
Even with two lost bags, only one of which was recovered, losing all are dive gear, and plane delays I would say this is an experience of a life time, and if you are looking for one of the few places in the world untouched by the mass commercialism of society, and natural beauty Taveuni is your place.

We stayed at the Garden Island Resort (GIR) in June 2005. It’s a lovely property and every room has a view of the water and a balcony/patio. The rooms are fairly simple but the staff does a great job giving every room a local feel with fresh flowers every day, tropical linens, etc. The hotel is surrounded by a lush tropical garden with coconut palm trees, papaya trees, etc.

There is no beach at the GIR but they have a nice pool. The hotel is the closest to the dive sites, only 10 minutes away! The diving was spectacular and the dive staff was very good. Off the resort there is a small island with very good snorkeling. The staff can drive you there by boat.

The staff at the GIR is outstanding. Everybody is extremely friendly and we always felt welcome.

The GIR is approximately 25 minutes from the airport, which means that it is further away from the other hotels on the island, which are “clustered” near the airport. You have to take a taxi to get there, which we only did once. Near the GIR there are local villages, the dateline, a natural waterslide and some shops and a simple restaurant right next door. This “isolation” may not be for everybody, but we enjoyed it.

We opted not to book the meal plan because we usually end up eating too much this way. We usually had lunch at the GIR and dinner at the “Waki Pokee” Restaurant next door. That’s a pretty simple place but the food was good and very cheap. The food at the GIR was very good and reasonably priced.

If you are looking for luxury and have a problem if a little critter finds its way into your room, the GIR (and Taveuni for that matter) may not be for you. But if you enjoy a nice, clean, tropical hotel with local flair, this hotel is for you. I would definitely stay there again.
