Namale Resort & Spa

Reviewed 5 April 2014

Whilst Namale is predominantly a couples retreat that doesn't mean you won't have a magnificent time, meet people from a over the world & have a wonderful Fijian experience.
The spa is one of the best in the world, just like Namales owner, Tony Robbins, it delivers way more than you expect.
There's plenty of group activities to join, socialise or you can relax in the sunny Bures. Ocean view is the way to go, with room service all included, you never need leave your room.
There are private decks which you can book, have meals served just for you, again all included.
Cocktail hour is a great time to meet other guests, and the cocktail menu is comprehensive
The food is divine - mostly sourced locally, seafood is freshly caught and the meat & cheese is some of New Zealand's finest.
The best thing about the food is you can chose local dishes or typical Westin food so there's something for everyone.
The desserts are simply delicious, and keep even the most well healed of sweet tooths satisfied.
I attended the inaugural wellness retreat - daily yoga & Pilates. Nothing quite like hot yoga by the beach, holding that pose whist gazing out across the ocean. Instructor was top notch & experienced, welcoming & friendly.
The beaches whilst on a coral reef are beautiful for low tide exploring & the walk to the waterfall a lovely way to see Fiji's nature.
What to bring - bug spray, they have it here but if you have your own personal preference for brand or smell - you'll need it so bring it.
Sunscreen - byo & plenty of to reapply.
Long sleeve linen or sheer tops for evening - helps keep the bugs at bay. Same goes for pants, cool for coverage.
Thongs/flip flops/jandals are a must - you'll live in them - as is a swimsuit or two.
Tea tree oil for bug bites if you get bit, it's the tropics so avoid the mozzies.
The toiletries are all Pure Fiji which is divine. And there's no shortage of towels & beach towels to keep you dry & comfortable.
In room wifi means you're off or on the grid as much or little as you like, which is comforting in these 24/7 times.
Having attended Tonys seminars, I can say to truly enjoy the wonders of Namale come for a holiday or the week before the event. Experience the day spa, private dining & activities.

Room Tip: Siga ocean view room - large bure looking out over the ocean with its own sitting area and close to...

Pros:

• Extraordinarily friendly and helpful staff
• Great snorkeling
• Very personal and intimate experience

Cons:

• Moderate mosquito/bug problem
• No true entertainment
• Unpredictable weather (at least in mid-March) can lead to cancellation of scheduled activities (though it did not otherwise interfere with our magnificent experience at the resort)

Bottom line: Highly recommended for a relaxing and intimate getaway, and a few tips can help make the most of the experience.

We stayed at Namale for one week as an early anniversary trip and were thoroughly pleased with our stay. The resort provides an intimate atmosphere (only about 20 rooms and a maximum of about 40 guests at any one time served by a staff of about 150). This leads to an experience that feels very personal: all of the staff greeted us by name and knew our drink and food preferences, there were plenty of opportunities for private dining at various areas of the resort (e.g. near waterfalls and caves or on private decks overlooking the water), and we rarely encountered other guests except on group outings such as tours and snorkeling trips. We also received a personal tour on arrival. Overall, the resort does an excellent job of making each couple feel like special guests.

The staff at Namale are truly exceptional. They are always friendly and eager to help. For example, although the weather conditions were occasionally poor for scheduled snorkeling trips, the dive shop team always went out of their way to find something for us to do, whether it was swimming in lagoon or finding a different snorkeling spot on the other side of the island with better conditions. The food and beverage service were also excellent (though we would occasionally drink down the water faster than they could refill our glasses on particularly warm days). The spa staff is also friendly and the massages, although a bit pricey, were the best that we have ever had, overlooking the water and including a complimentary foot wash and scrub.

We took four snorkeling trips at three different locations while at Namale and saw beautiful sea life and coral every time. The staff also brought bread to feed the fish on two of our trips, which created great photo opportunities and created a cool experience of being surrounded by schools of fish. Note that even if you don’t see snorkeling on the list of scheduled events for the day, there is almost always a snorkeling trip planned (or available), generally sometime between 2:00 and 2:30. We also saw great sea life on the beaches and reefs that surround the property, including lots of crabs, starfish, and sea slugs/worms.

Entertainment was provided nightly at 6:30pm and ranged from traditional dancing to choirs. The performances are from local villagers, which is absolutely awesome, but if you’re looking for professional entertainment, then you should recalibrate your expectations. Also, it appears as though they wait for all of the guests to arrive before starting the entertainment. We were late a few times due to just puttering around the bure, showed up at 7:15 and hadn’t missed the entertainment – so keep that in mind.

One of the most fun and memorable parts of the trip was making a stone on our last day. Each couple gets a blank, wet concrete paver to etch something into and they use that stone in the planters or walkways around the island; it’s a great way to remember your trip and incentivize your return.

Now for a few tips. First, be sure to schedule your “dine outs” early in your stay (or possibly even before you arrive) as they book up quickly. We first spoke to the staff about scheduling some special meals halfway through our stay, at which point only one dinner location was available (on our last evening) and one breakfast location was available (on our second to last day). Our breakfast was ultimately cancelled due to a morning rainstorm, so we only had one meal outside the main dining bure (in a “cave” near the beach), but we know that many couples ate several meals out, including sunrise breakfasts on private decks and romantic dinners near a waterfall. We were also told that we might want to schedule our massages before we arrived as well, but we did not have any trouble setting those up after we arrived.

Also, note that the weather on the island can be somewhat unpredictable (at least in March, when we stayed there), with unexpected rainstorms or strong wind causing interference with scheduled activities (such as our breakfast and a planned snorkeling/dolphin-and-shark-watching excursion). In fact, the weather can vary even at different places on the resort, drizzling on one end, sunny and cloudless in the middle, and raining heavily on the other side (it’s a resort of hundreds of acres). Overall, however, the weather was beautiful for most of our stay – temperatures in the high 80s and fairly humid.

Another thing to keep in mind when considering Namale is the only real problem with the resort (or, perhaps more fairly, with the Fiji area). It did not appear that Namale fogs the resort (likely, because most of their produce is grown fresh on the property). As a result, we suffered quite a few mosquito bites for much of our stay, even though we have generally not had such problems in the past when traveling. The resort does provide complementary insect repellant, which seemed to help some, and mosquito netting in all of the bures.

The bug problem also crept into our bure; there always seemed to be a couple of bugs in the room no matter how careful we were about keeping doors and windows closed. And, after one afternoon enjoying the property, we returned to the less than pleasant surprise of a large black spider in the bure (seriously, it was 3 inches across). Fortunately, the resort also provides complementary insect killer, which we put to good use on the spider.

Also, be aware that the beaches on the resort (and elsewhere on the island) are not quite what you would expect at other island destinations. The beaches in Fiji are generally surrounded by reefs and rocks, with few, if any, areas to walk straight from the sand into the water without reef shoes. This situation does make for awesome reef walks, however, so you can make the most of it.

The Kava Bowl (activity center with bowling, ping pong, air hockey, golf simulator, music, and movies all available) is a bit of a hidden gem, despite being included in the arrival tour. We never saw anyone there (much like the rest of the resort), and we only used it on our final day. We had a great time and probably would have enjoyed using it more throughout our stay.

Finally, be sure to let the staff know if you are interested in any tours, activities, food, or anything else that you don’t see specifically offered. They really go out of their way to satisfy you. However, if you express interest in a specially scheduled activity, don’t be shy about checking in about whether it has been scheduled. In our experience, the staff sometimes forgot to let us know when something that we had expressed interest in had been scheduled, and we ended up missing the activity.

Thank you, Namale, for sharing your family, your culture, and your beautiful resort with us. Without a doubt, we would recommend it to anyone.

Bula Vinaka and thank you so much for your review.

Love the comparison to a "resort just like the movies". And just like amazing movies, we have a fabulous cast that makes it all happen for an amazing experience. It was a pity that Mother Nature decided to play havoc with the weather. Thank you so much for your feedback on bugs. It is feedback such as this that helps us to review how we do things and you'll be happy to hear that this problem has already been tackled at multiple levels over and above our very early morning fogging. Thank you once again for choosing Namale. We appreciate you spending time with us.

I have been reading previous reviews on this resort since I booked our vacation in August. I have just returned home this morning. If you have read the previous reviews, than you know what you can expect from this amazing resort. If there is one thing that makes Namale special, it has to be the warm and friendly staff. They make you feel important and special. Believe me, when you return home, you are going to miss the attention they shower on you.

The reception staff, Epo, Kaliti, and Mere, to name a few, always made sure you were well taken care of.

The food/drinks were amazing. I encourage you to make special requests from the chef. We did and we were not disappointed. You usually had your request by dinner that same night or the next day. Chef Joe told us, his staff enjoys being challenged. Sam, Holena and Siti (bartenders) really made great drinks and made sure my husband's glass was always full without him asking.

Bula kart drivers, Vili, Tiko and Wes, were never very far away and ready to pick you up.

If you can afford to upgrade to an Oceanview or Villa, it is well worth it. Although, it really doesn't matter because all guests are treated equally.

Activities staff were always ready to help plan your day.

The resort provides insect repellent, use it. The mosquito's can be brutal. Do not over pack. They provide laundry service in the rate and you have your clothes back the next day.

I have to say in closing, that Namale has set the bar very high for future travel for my husband and I.

Vinaka to the Namale staff for making our vacation/anniversary very special.

Room Tip: Oceanview or Villa are amazing and all different. They are larger than the Garden Bure.

For most people staying at the Namale will be once only but it's not just a holiday - it's an unforgettable experience from start to finish. The numerous staff are very friendly and cater to your every need or whim - nothing is too much for them but in a down-to-earth homely manner so you feel totally relaxed all the time.
Guests can eat when and where they like, we even ordered champagne in the outdoor hottub one day. The mini bar is always fully stocked and room service available for snacks though the vast number of breakfast, lunch and dinner courses means you never really do feel hungry.
The spa is awesome and we hired sole use of the spa including massage and aqua rooms one evening which was very special.
Each bure/villa is privately accessed with spacious luxurious accommodation. The daily laundry service was very useful also. The cleaning staff always waited for a convenient time to call and never disturbed us. In fact one day as we left our bure and looked back, the cleaning staff seemed to appear from the bushes to set about business cleaning for us.
If you want to make one amazing trip of a lifetime where you will pampered and treated like royalty then this is the resort for you.

… and that’s no exaggeration. Reading the last few reviews, I think we were members of a large group that consider this one of the top destinations in the world. Where to begin… from arrival to departure, this is an amazing resort.

If you’ve never been to Fiji, the setting is everything you wish Hawaii would be: a lush, tropical paradise without the crowds. The Fijians are truly the warmest, most welcoming people I’ve met (I’ll never forget the random customs guy at the X-ray machine at the airport in Nadi shaking my hand saying Bula, welcome to Fiji!).

I could write a novel about Namale, but suffice it to say that the setting, food, accommodations, adventures, drinks, and most of all the people, are everything you could ever ask for on a honeymoon or romantic getaway. If you’re not happy here, then you’re not capable of being happy! Our highlights: lunch (and a swim) at the waterfall, our amazing oceanfront room, Siti’s killer drinks, kayaking and paddleboarding (ask for directions to the “river” or find it yourself), and the evening cultural experiences. Don’t be afraid of kava, just clap once and go for it! We opted to stay local and declined the excursions into town, just because the resort is so amazing that we didn’t want to leave. Seriously, if you’re lucky enough to have heard of this place and are considering it for a honeymoon or whatever, look no further, you’ve found what you’re looking for.

A bit of advice if you go: trust me, you’ll want to say thank you to each and every staff member you meet at Namale for their amazing hospitality. We’d heard a suggestion to bring bags of candy (Halloween style) as a small gift, as it’s difficult to obtain here and the kids love it. We brought some but wished we’d filled our suitcases! We had also heard that medical supplies are appreciated in the villages.

A huge thanks to all of the Namale staff for making this place what it is. We can’t wait to get back, even if it might be a few years. Vinaka!
