Naveria Heights Lodge
Ranked #8 of 12 Hotels in Savusavu
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 23 November 2012

We decided to book Naveria Heights based on the gorgeous pictures and highly positive comments posted online...but still, there was ample room to be dazzled as we arrived to the lodge: perched on top of a hill, the view really took our breath away. The lodge itself was beautifully decorated, with natural materials, a lovely small pool, wooden terrace and lush tropical garden surrounding the property. Our room had the same amazing view of the Pacific ocean, and a lovely outdoor seating area. We felt like we never wanted to leave.
Sharon, our Hostess, was very friendly and caring all through, and I can say she is one kind of a woman! Very sporty and highly knowledgeable of the local wildlfe & flora, she embarked us on some truly enjoyable trecks around Savu-Savu: we did the "killer walk", bathed into wild waterfalls, river-tubed, dived from cliffs, scuba-dived, snorkeled...while learning from Sharon about nuts, edible plants, tropical fish and coconut oil fabrication. Of course if you wish to spend a more laid-back holiday, you can enjoy the pool, take a nap in a hammock, or join one of Sharon's morning yoga session on the deck.
Breakfast was a great highlight of the day: made from fresh tropical fruits, homemade bread and granola as well as coffee or tea...very healthy yet fulfilling!
You will love this place if: 1/ you like quality alternative to hotels. (Naveria Heights makes you feel exclusive, like this is your own home in heaven!). 2/ you love outdoor activities, out-of-the-beaten-path trecks 3/ you enjoy learning from locals about food, wildlife, sceneries, customs & history.
This might not be your place if: 1/ you are a 5 stars hotel freak and can't live without 24/h room service, TV set, aircon and mini-bar. 2/ you do not want to eat anything else for breakfast except fried-eggs & bacon 3/ you are the opposite of Sporty and strive for an absolutely lazy holiday
Couple of tips /useful comments: 1/ Commuting - there is a rather steady walk to go up or down the lodge. While it's doable for most of us, be careful if you have limited mobility or are with young children / babies. Sharon was very gracious offering us rides up / down in her truck anytime she was moving. Otherwise, you can order a lift from Bobbi, a friendly local taxi driver living just up Naveria Lodge (Sharon was happy to call him for us anytime we needed)
2/ Room amenities - Don't be off-put by the fact there is no aircon or mini bar. The room is equipped with efficient fans, and if you leave your windows open at night (there is a mosquito net), a lovely fresh breeze cools you off, and you can wake up to the sound of tropical rain. You are also welcome to store your bottles in the kitchen's fridge.
3/ Food - Only breakfast is included in your rate (succulent!), however if you give reasonable pre-notice to Sharon, she can have lovely diners cooked for you, with fresh local ingredients and even imported wines (Fiji carrry, big salads and even lobsters if ordered early enough). If you wonder about local best restaurants, try the Surf & Turf downtown (beautiful selection of grilled seafood, nice wine list) or the Captain's terrace.
4/ Drinks - If you want to drink local, icy-cold FIJI beers can be found pretty much anywhere for cheap. You can also try the surprising "Kava"; a bitter mixture of grounded herbs and water that has interesting sedative effect... and if wine is more your thing, there is a good liquor store downtown with imported Australian wines and even French wines. They are rather expensive, but it depends on how much you like your chill Chardonnay on holidays...(personally: too much to care!). For a romantic escape, go for cocktails at Cousteau's 5 stars resort (20 mn by taxi): WOW effect guarantee. Just don't go for diner buffet: it's overpriced and surprisingly disappointing for the cost. Lastly and sorry this comes last, water is best drank from bottles only, but the iconic "FIJI water" is delicious and refreshing.
On a final side note: it's about time you quit complaining about mosquitoes in tropical areas! Repellent and small electrical devices are widely available everywhere...just bring'em over! (If I recall well, the rooms are equipped devices already).

Room Tip: Best rooms are the one with private balcony access: they are equipped with lounging beds, chairs or...

For us, Naveria Heights Lodge was the perfect place to stay.
The Lodge itself is beautiful - wonderfully designed, set high uphill amidst a huge tropical garden. All day long, you may enjoy breathtaking views over the garden and over the vast blue of Savusavu bay, be it from your room or from the main terrace where you can also relax in a crystal clear pool. Not only the setting and design of the lodge is great, but it is also the service and hospitality that makes for the excellent rating. The ladies servicing the lodge and our room were always kind, helpful and smiling, never intruded our privacy, but at the same time, they were easily found when we needed assistance or wanted to chat for a while. More importantly, the owner of the Lodge (Sharon) is easily the best host you can have! We almost felt like part of her family when we were leaving.
Breakfast was a healthy and filling combination of cereal, yoghurt, tropical fruits, toast, selection of marmelades and jams etc. with coffee, tea and fruit juice. No eggs/ham/sausage to be expected - no problem for us (we would not want to eat ham and sausage on hot days such as those in Savusavu anyway).
The great thing about Naveria is that you may really chose the way you want to spend your holiday - if you wish to go the active way, no problem - your host (Sharon) has always another possibility for you, e.g. hiking trips to the bush to see waterfalls, mudpools, learn about local plants and meet local people, snorkeling, diving, kayaking, mountain biking. If you wish to just lay back and relax - no problem either. Its all up to you.
Just a few points for other travelers: you can drive to the lodge only by 4WD (Sharon can give you a lift whenever possible) and the walk is quite a climb. Because you would eat lunch and dinner in town (which is a great experience as well), you must be prepared to do the walk each day. But no worries, you do not have to be all that fit and its a good cardio.
To summarize, if you wish to enjoy laid back fiji time - go for naveria heights.

We stayed here for 2 nights before our Tui Tai trip, and one night after, and we'd go back in a heartbeat. Sharon was so great with everything from logistics of getting to and from the airport to putting together a great day of tubing, volcanic mud bath and horseback riding through a river and massages, I couldn't imagine spending my savusavu time anywhere else. Its not the cheapest option, but you get a lot for the money. Sharon has two young boys who we got along with famously so we were thrilled to have them come along for the river adventure. It really was like being welcomed into the guest house of a life long friend's beautiful home. Suvita, who makes breakfast and maintains the house is just about made of sugar she is so sweet!!!

Its close enough to town to walk, which is good because I don't think that I would be ok driving up that driveway hill with anyone who wasn't already used to it, even if we had rented a 4wd vehicle. I read the reviews, I knew it would be long and steep and we'd be out of breath. Holy cow, they weren't kidding, there are just no words to explain how crazy steep it is for driving! Super steep and not paved! If walking up steep trails is hard for you, you'll need to rely on cabs (which is fine, there are a zillion in town and they aren't expensive). But if you just take it one hill at a time, and don't be in a rush, its really not that big a deal!!

Bottom line - I'd stay there again, I'd recommend it to my friends and family, and the amazing view and house are worth every penny, with the sweetness of Suvita and the welcoming nature of the family just additional bonus'!

Room Tip: Both rooms have private decks, but one has 2 decks including a super private (as in can't be see...

The Lodge was situated high on the hill with breath-taking views. Breakfast was served with a smile and good humour. The place radiated beauty, health and serenity. Our 6 days did not do it justice. We fell in love with Savusavu and its people. So much to do, or just do nothing at all. Thanks to Sharon and her family, Elayne, Sarita, Marie, Viri, Cathy, Jimmy, Bobby, Rauf and everyone else we met that made our little holiday so special.

NHL is Sharon's home that she opens up for just a few visitors. Each morning a delicious breakfast containing homemade bread & muffins, yogurt, fruit, granola, juices, water is prepared fresh for you. You can relax on the property, see the town on your own or have Sharon take you on a tour.

The town is small so you can walk from end to end in less than 10 mins. Copra Shed has good food but it's noticeable more expensive for a meal. Savusavu Wok was the best food we ate, super inexpensive and some of the best Chinese food I've had.

10 mins up the road (left once down the hill) is a good spot to hop in the water but you can swim anywhere.

The Lagoon is beautiful have Sharon take you or find a ride with the taxi drivers they will wait with you all day and take you anywhere (went to a waterfall via taxi). Ask for meter rate.

We took B-12, garlic pills and deet and still got bit. So it's gonna happen, best defense is long, loose flowing clothing... all the chemicals and what not are not worth it.

Also NHL is located up a steep, steep, steep hill that's followed by 100+ stairs... Yep... You can walk it, we did but call Bobby and take the $10 4x4 ride up and down the hill for easy front door service or be prepared to hike big time (left me sweaty and needing a shower and a change of clothes)... (most times Sharon can give you a lift down the hill)

Savusavu and NHL are perfect if you want a "living in Fiji as a local" experience... Tourist will have a great time here to but there are other islands for that standard tourist experience. Savusavu is a chance to experience a slice of Fiji life of, which is a slice of paradise. Bula!

Room Tip: Ask for the back room or big room, the room with outdoor daybed...

For those looking to get away from it all, Naveria Heights Lodge is it! Located in the quaint town of Savusavu, Sharon has built a spectacular house high on a cliff with a to-die-for view of Savusavu Harbor. My husband and I truly enjoyed our stay with Sharon, the comfortable and well-kept room, the wonderful breakfasts that were prepared for us, and the warm hospitality offered by Sharon and her family. Sharon is an amazing hostess and really sweet person. She has a wealth of knowledge about the Fiji Islands, and is especially interested in health and physical fitness. Although some people may complain about the long trek up the hill to get to the lodge, the payoff is the view and Sharon's amazing home! And would it really kill you to get some exercise in during your trip to paradise?!

Room Tip: Try to get the larger room with the additional outdoor deck.

Naveria Lodge is the place to stay if you are looking for a tranquil escape from it all and are in the Savusavu area. Nestled in the hillside, this 3 bedroom boutique hotel provides guests with personalized service, breathtaking views, and beautiful eco friendly rooms. We were impressed with the people that work there and how they make you truly feel at home. The homemade muselix and breads, fresh fruit, and jellies are all part of an included breakfast. If you care to have a delicious fresh curry meal on the deck it can be arranged for a small fee.The town is not really for tourists but it is a good base for those who are diving in the area or looking to do some outdoor adventures. The owner also arranges outdoor adventures for hotel guests and other travelers in the area. A gem in the area and a must do if you are in Vanu Levu.
