We just had a couple day layover in Fiji and decided that we didn't want to do the resort thing so took the approximately 2.5 hour drive from the Nadi airport up to Rakiraki were we were able to see the real Fiji along the way. The Queens Hwy was closed for bridge replacement not far from the hotel so we had to drive through Rakiraki on detour to the hotel so that was a little confusing. The rooms were basic, but functional. We dropped off our bags and freshened up and then drove up to the Volivoli resort that was about 20 minutes away and walked down to their beach to enjoy a little Fiji beach and sunset. We ate dinner that night at the hotel. The food was good and about on par price wise with other restaurants we had seen – around $20 -$30 FD for most meals. We went into town and grabbed a few breakfast items and put them in the room fridge for breakfast. Hotel breakfasts always seem to be way more expensive than they should be – including this one. I was able to put the room on a credit card, but it didn't look like they did that very often and it took a couple tries to get it. They also charge extra (I think it was 3%) for putting it on a card. The grounds were nice and we did enjoy a stroll around them. The staff was all very friendly and helpful.
