“Great Matress, very poor service.”
Reviewed 1 September 2013

My dad and I chose Abiquiu Inn so that we could have the comfort of a two bedroom casita while attending a Watercolor retreat at Ghost Ranch up the road. While we found the beds very comfortable and the atmosphere charming, it seemed that each night we returned to the Inn we were lacking in basic necessities: no soap in the shower, robes and bathmats not replaced, nor cups or coffee. After having decided to splurge on Abiquiu Inn at over $200 a night specifically to have a more comfortable stay, we were dissappointed to say the least. Also the kitchen was not at all fully equiped- we had one glass for drinking and a ragtag assortment of pans. No stove or oven, just a hotplate. After walking over to the office to ask for soap, tiwels, robes and coffee, a friendly staff apologized and most of those items were brought over that evening. When we checked in we asked for a map of the area and recieved a xerox so illegible It was embarrassing. The place has a lot of potential but some management problem prevents successfull hospitality, as the maidservice was far below that I've experienced in a Motel 6.

We stayed for 5 nights and it was totally charming. We overlooked the poor maid service because Abiquiu is not about "city" concerns. It's loaded with artists, writers, poets, and photographers -- all mixed in with the earthy local farmers and Hispanics whose families have lived there for generations.
The inn also has wonderful food and when you're tired, it's lovely to have breakfast, lunch or dinner available. Wi-fi was available in the dining room and to make a cell phone call, you had to drive 4 miles. We would have liked a refrigerator in our room, but the gas fire place made up for it.

Abiquiu Inn sits on Hway 84, the main route into town from Santa Fe (about an hour away), in a bosque riverside location below the old plaza of Abiquiu where Georgia O'Keeffe's adobe home attracts thousands of visitors each year -- its ticket office, which requires advance booking, is on the Inn property. I first stayed in a cottage back of the Inn more than 10 yrs ago, when it was owned by a Mideastern couple and had excellent regional food as well as local specialties. This continues, although ownership changed hands six years or so ago and the new owners have upgraded the gift shop, added an attractive clothing and jewelry collection, and expanded the number of rooms and restaurant in an attractive way. We had lunch there 2 weeks ago en route to Christ in the Desert Carmelite monastery, and saw Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg having lunch with her family -- Ginsburg is a great opera fan who comes to Santa Fe Opera often, and we imagine she was going to tour the O'Keeffe home. Good, friendly service and attentive staff though the wait for food was a bit long -- probably due to the Justice and her large security detail.

Room Tip: Several adobe cottages are available beside the Inn itself -- choose one farthest back toward the &q...

We'd heard mixed reviews about the Abiquiu Inn but were persuaded to try it because it's nearly the only place to stay *in* Abiquiu.
Our arrival was the most negative experience we had there. We got there early and knew it, but just wanted to let them know we were in the area & to check when we could check in. They took a long time to get to us (the front desk also serves as the checkout for the gift shop) but eventually told us to come back in 2 hours. We drove around the area and arrived back at the Inn 2 hours later. Again we waited while they checked out gift shop customers. Then we were told it would be 30 more minutes. We waited outside. When we went in to get our key, they started checking us in then said "oh, wait, none of the casitas will be ready for another 30 minutes," putting us well past their regular check-in time. By then, I admit, I was a little frustrated. I mean, why clean your biggest, most expensive rooms last? We waited & finally got checked in several minutes after the promised time. That's the bad part of this experience

The good part? We had a lovely little casita (one bedroom, one bathroom, a living room/kitchen) with a great screened porch overlooking a pasture filled with friendly cows & a view of the distant mesas. We spent most of our time on that porch! While I'd put a proper coffee-maker in the kitchen, it was otherwise perfectly well appointed. The air-conditioning is from noisy two in-wall units, so we just turned them off & opened the windows. The place was perfectly cool that way.

We had dinner in the restuaruant both nights, which was perfectly lovely food but NOT the native New Mexican cuisine we prefer to eat. And service was a little slow -- it seemed as if there was only one waitress for the whole place.

All in all, a lovely place, convenient to Abiquiu and its environs though a bit pricey and service-wonky. We probably won't stay there again since we could easily stay in Espanola or Taos & drive to the area.

In early August 2013, my wife and I were returning from a week in southern Colorado and driving back to our home near Dallas, Texas. We were looking for nice quiet place to spend the night and had planned to stop over in Chama, NM, but due to the crowded Chama Days celebration, we opted to keep on driving farther south. We stopped to look at the scenic Lake Abiquiu and checked the Tripadvisor app on the cell phone for nearby lodging. The Tripadvisor website recommended the the Abiquiu Inn, so we called Inn and spoke to both Tracy and Juan in order to make a reservation and get directions. Upon arriving at the Inn, we noted the scenic setting and cool breeze blowing through the trees like an oasis in the desert. We were warmly greeted Tracy and Juan at the front desk and arranged for a nice room for one night. We went to our room (#5) and loved the decor. It had a great king bed and a gas fireplace and the quiet location on the back side of the Inn was great. We immediately went up to the front desk and asked if the same room was available for a second night, but were advised it was already booked for the next night. My wife asked Juan and Tracy if there was any way we could get the same room again and they graciously rearranged their reservation list to accommodate us for the second night. We ate in the Abiquiu Inn Restaurant for several meals (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner) for the next couple of days and found the food to be very good, but the service to be exceptional. All of the wait staff was attentive and friendly, but we particularly loved Yolanda who's had a vivacious personality. We had several occasions to see Juan and Tracy during our visit and they always greeted us warmly and inquired about our stay. While we were in the Abiquiu area relaxing we toured the area and our favorite attraction was the Christ in the Desert Monastery located in the middle of nowhere. Overall we loved the Abiquiu Inn and plan to return to spend a couple of relaxing nights on our next trip to the area. Thanks again to Juan, Tracy and Yolanda for making our stay at the Abiquiu Inn memorable.

Room Tip: Rooms facing away from the highway are quieter.

My older sister (lives in New Mexico) treated me (Vancouver Canada)to a night at the Inn and tour of the Georgia O'Keefe house for my birthday the beginning of August. Both of us were delighted with the service and the staff. On our arrival we were greeted at the door and offered a coffee while we waited for our room. Just minutes later with coffee in hand we went to our room and before we had time to settle in were presented with two amazing desserts with birthday candles. "Eat dessert first" we said!. We had the salmon for dinner and the service in the restaurant was excellent - being a West Coaster I know my salmon. The beds and pillows are to die for - where do you get those?! Thank you to everyone for making my special birthday present a wonderful experience for both of us. The best gift to me was how pleased my sister was with how everything turned out - it was a win win all around.

This is Georgia O'Keefe country. In fact, you can see the property from her house if you know where to look. This is a remote location as far as your electronics are concerned... so you might make some arrangements if you have to keep in touch with civilization every minute. But there is a TV in the room.

We had room #6... spacious and quiet... with a shared garden patio that had a fountain. The bathroom was adequate with the shower water extremely hard so you won't be sudsing up too much. Be sure to check your room if a hairdryer is needed as soon as you check-in.

Breakfast service starts at 7 in the dining room... with a full b'fast menu that's not included in the room price.

The setting, while on the hiway, is quite tranquil as the rooms/casitas are in the woods for idealic location. The staff is helpful.

Room Tip: Book ahead.
