I stayed at Mandinka Lodge for three weeks in August of 2013. Mandinka Lodge is a small guesthouse, and therefore as a customer I felt that I was always being taken care of, however, my privacy was never invaded upon. In Gambia, I was a solo female traveler, and I felt comfortable with the location and security of Mandinka Lodge. The cleaning service was good. Plus, the owners assisted me in planning, organizing, and facilitating activities in Gambia. They were ready and able to share Gambia’s sites of historical and geographical interest.
At Mandinka Lodge I stayed for one week in the guesthouse and two weeks in the lodge. Both accommodations have their own aesthetic appeal. The guesthouse is attached to the main residence. The rooms are a little brighter and the bathroom is shared. I was more social when staying in the guesthouse, spending more time relaxing in the common garden area. The lodges are larger, and more intimate. The lodges have dimmer light, grass roofs that altered the sound of the rain and wind (I traveled during rainy season), curved walls, no interior doors, etc. Also, the lodges have personal bathrooms, and they are in a garden area off the main house. The way the property is configured the lodges feel secluded from the activities of the main building.
Mandinka Lodge is not located on the town’s main strip, but it is near. It is a short walk to the Senegambia strip (7 minutes), the pharmacy and ATM machines (5 minutes), the beach and monkey park (10-15 minutes), and a grocery store (10-15 minutes). I walked everywhere, but taxis are readily available. Plus, it is a short taxi ride to Serekunda market. There are convenience stores, and restaurants on the main road to Mandinka Lodge, so you do not have to walk far for refreshments, food, or cosmetic supplies. Plus, if you are feeling lazy the gardens at Mandinka Lodge are beautiful for sitting and relaxing on a lazy day.
Mandinka lodge is open all year. I found guest staying at Mandinka Lodge were there for long holidays, or they were repeat customers to the Gambia and Mandinka Lodge. Staying at Mandinka Lodge was a positive addition to my trip, and I would highly recommend Mandinka Lodge to travelers looking for a place to stay in Kololi.
