Mandinka Lodge
Reviewed 9 September 2013

I stayed at Mandinka Lodge for three weeks in August of 2013. Mandinka Lodge is a small guesthouse, and therefore as a customer I felt that I was always being taken care of, however, my privacy was never invaded upon. In Gambia, I was a solo female traveler, and I felt comfortable with the location and security of Mandinka Lodge. The cleaning service was good. Plus, the owners assisted me in planning, organizing, and facilitating activities in Gambia. They were ready and able to share Gambia’s sites of historical and geographical interest.

At Mandinka Lodge I stayed for one week in the guesthouse and two weeks in the lodge. Both accommodations have their own aesthetic appeal. The guesthouse is attached to the main residence. The rooms are a little brighter and the bathroom is shared. I was more social when staying in the guesthouse, spending more time relaxing in the common garden area. The lodges are larger, and more intimate. The lodges have dimmer light, grass roofs that altered the sound of the rain and wind (I traveled during rainy season), curved walls, no interior doors, etc. Also, the lodges have personal bathrooms, and they are in a garden area off the main house. The way the property is configured the lodges feel secluded from the activities of the main building.

Mandinka Lodge is not located on the town’s main strip, but it is near. It is a short walk to the Senegambia strip (7 minutes), the pharmacy and ATM machines (5 minutes), the beach and monkey park (10-15 minutes), and a grocery store (10-15 minutes). I walked everywhere, but taxis are readily available. Plus, it is a short taxi ride to Serekunda market. There are convenience stores, and restaurants on the main road to Mandinka Lodge, so you do not have to walk far for refreshments, food, or cosmetic supplies. Plus, if you are feeling lazy the gardens at Mandinka Lodge are beautiful for sitting and relaxing on a lazy day.

Mandinka lodge is open all year. I found guest staying at Mandinka Lodge were there for long holidays, or they were repeat customers to the Gambia and Mandinka Lodge. Staying at Mandinka Lodge was a positive addition to my trip, and I would highly recommend Mandinka Lodge to travelers looking for a place to stay in Kololi.

We stayed at Mandinka lodges over New Year and absolutely loved our stay! If you don't fancy big hotels or hords of tourists, but don't want to give up your European living standards either, then it is a perfect place to stay! In local surroundings, but still close to the necessary infrastructure of tourist restaurants or local eateries (much more advisable), taxis or gelli-gellis, beach, local tailors, money exchange etc etc etc Diane and Lamin are great hosts, always ready to help or to have a chat in the garden. If one day we'll go back to the Gambia, we already know where to stay!

Stayed here 3rd week in february 2013. The owner Diane met us at the airport with a welcome smile. When we arrived at Mandinka Lodges we met her Gambian partner Lamin, a really nice friendly guy (you must try his lemon tea its lovely). Its in a good location amongst the locals who are all so friendly with only a ten minute walk to the Senegambia strip which has all the restaurants and entertainment you need. Nice beaches nearby to sunbathe or have a drink in the many beach bars. The gardens at Mandinka Lodge are peaceful and relaxing with beautiful flowers and banana plants, and Diane`s design of the lodges was brilliant with a very comfy bed. A lovely relaxing stay with great hosts.

Room Tip: The lodges are excellent set in lovely gardens

We stayed here in February, Diane and Lamin are very hospitable, making their guest feel more like family, the accommodation is clean and comfortable and situated away from the busy main strip, but within easy walking distance to restaurants and beach. Diane is always available to help wherever she can and Lamin is an expert for a wonderful lemon tea! If you want to experience Gambia and not stay in a hotel but feel comfortable and safe then give Mandinka Lodge a try. All in all great stay with wonderful hosts.

Our first visit to The Gambia, and stayed here at Mandinka Lodges for 2 weeks in December, was the best holiday we have had. The accommodation is excellent and close to the ‘Strip’ at Kololi where all the restaurants, bars and nightlife are located. Diane and Lamin are so welcoming, and will put themselves out to make your holiday enjoyable and interesting.
We met so many interesting people, both guests and local people, which we would not have met staying in a hotel. We also visited local shops and markets, had gifts make by local craftsmen, and clothes made by a local tailor, all of which we would not have known about without our hosts.
The lodges are pretty, and have their own garden where you can sunbathe and have peace a quiet whenever you like, and they have all their own facilities’ which are second to none. The gardens are home to a variety of very pretty birds, colourful flowers and bananas growing everywhere. Breakfast is served to the guests by Abby the maid, dressed in her colourful African dress, all local fresh food fetched every morning, which can be eaten at leisure, at your own time. Diane will provide a light lunch if you wish, so you can laze around the garden all day if that’s your fancy. Weather is fantastic at this time of year, in the 30's every day, and slighty cooler at night.
You are welcome at anytime to join with your hosts in the ‘Banterbar’, where you will find yourself chatting with other guests, and friends who pop in. A short walk to the beach where you will find you can wander for miles along the sand, and dip your feet in the ocean. Or go for a swim, or see the fishing boats come and go. A must is a visit to the fish market, or along the coast to Serrekunda, where there is a sea of market stalls, all vying for your trade.
Diane will arrange trips for you, and give advice about travel and where to visit if you ask, she is only too willing to help make your holiday one to remember, and you will see more of the local life, far better than staying in a hotel all day and seeing only the hotel sun bed, and a hotel room.
Mandinka lodges get the thumbs up from us every time, and we can’t wait to go back again.

It is hard to know how to describe perfection. Mandinka Lodges provide a spot of tranquility set within a beautiful garden. The round houses are amazing. Luxuriously huge with the best roof I have ever seen. Walking in you are greeted by a massive bed and a sense of calm and presented with the best nights sleep. Diane and Lamin are the most perfect hosts and nothing was a problem. The lodges are in a great position away from the main tourist area and a short walk from the beach. I am thankful that I have found Mandinka Lodges for my return trips to The Gambia. If you love unique and circular places to stay then this is one of the best.

Where do I start. I stayed here for a week June 5th - 12th. I stayed in the house because the lodges were already booked. The room in the house was fine nice large bedroom with nice African furniture the whole house was tastefully decorated. the bedroom had a large fan and seperate shower room, linen and towels were changed regularly. I will be visiting again to experience the lodges which I viewed during my stay. Diane and Lamin are fantastic hosts, nothing is too much trouble you can be self catering or bed and breakfast. You have access to the family kitchen and use of the fridge in the kitchen. Diane will organise any trips and can advise you on anything and will transport to and from the airport.
