“Be prepared for trekking and walking a lot of steps”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 March 2014

I reached back home just now from Araku.

I started to Araku from Hyderabad. I had a night train journey from Hyderabad to Vizag and reached vizag around 3:30am. There is only one train to Araku from Vizag that runs every day at 6:50am. Its a must go train as it goes through 20+ tunnels in a 5 hour journey to Araku. Avoid second sitting in it and go for first class ticket. Adjust with it being a passenger train and doesn't have AC compartments.

Must visit places in Araku are Borra Caves and Katiki Waterfalls. Borra Caves has a lot of steps (close to 300) that you have to get down to see the awesome cave formations. Nice place to take a lot of photos. The difficult part is to climb up back those 300 steps.

The way to reach Katiki waterfalls is rocky (only jeeps are allowed as it goes over rocky mountains literally). You will be dropped at a place on the mountain where you have to cross a railway track and then start trekking for another 30 minutes to reach the waterfall. Worth the hard work as you reach the fall.

But don't try to take elders to both the above places. Its simply not possible.

Other minor sight seeing locations are Chaprai water falls, Coffee plantations, Tribal museum, etc. Out of which, only Chaprai and Coffee plantations are worthy. Other places are not maintained.

Stay only in AP toursim resorts as other private resorts look deserted. Haritha Hill resort has a very good view. It was totally worth the money for a government maintained resort.

Don't miss Bamboo chicken (felt it like a starter) which is made without oil and water and cooked inside bamboo.

Over all, you can visit once.

“Best for train commuters”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 March 2014

It is highly recommended if you travel the trip from Vizag to Araku Valley by train because of its scenic beauty. On the station there will be local taxi walas hiring us with their power of negotiations. Never succumb to their initial prices. Remember they need you for their daily bread. It is difficult to find much ATMs at Araku Valley and hence it is recommended to have cash in all denominations. Food is not of such a quality in the place. Sometimes it is better to carry biscuits and other snack chats.

“Good place to visit.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 March 2014

The journey by train is very good. Not much places to visit in araku. We have gone by APTDC arranged package and the train journey is exciting. The Coach in which we have travelled is exclusively for the tourists of APTDC, but the coach quality / cleanliness is poor. This area is to be improved. The bus journey in return is very good. In return they will show Borra Caves.

“Amid the clouds”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 March 2014

A valley in the Eastern Ghats and we were in the cloud kingdom as we visited in the monsoon. We were otherwise lucky to have explored the valley on foot as there was not much rain. The APTDC resort is located on the highway. Also, try the Araku Coffee House for the cuppa!
