“Portugese Fort”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 October 2013

The memory of Vasco-da- Gama comes to mind, when one sees the Fort. It is a huge one and some descriptions are given explaining the monument by the Archeological Survey of India. But the fort is in ruins, which require more upkeep. The view from top, the canons and the jail inside the sea is breath taking. Lot of parrots live on the roof top of the fort, which creates a wonderful sight for the visitor. The road to the fort is well maintained by the administration and lined with trees.

“Lost History!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 October 2013

The fort is on its own there are no restorations happening. It has been left to fade away with time. Despite of so many visitors visiting this Fort everyday, there is no upkeep done to this fort. Just like other places in Diu there are no History Tags no descriptions written in the fort. Part of the Fort has been given to the Police Station. They have used the old cannon balls to showcase their courtyard without realizing the fact that these are of historical importance. You can see old Diu Jail from the fort it is built in the middle of the sea. Its a nice view from the top of the fort.

“Typical fort”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 October 2013

We visited there as a family group and it was not particularly impressive. The history is intresting and the signage explaining the history is adequate. I was not impressed by the lack of safety equipment (Hand rails and restricted areas) in that you can climb to the top if you dare to do so by huging the wall without any safety rails and only about a foot wide ledge to make it to a set of stairs to go to the top. NOT for the handicapped at all in that the entrance is very steep, but it does have a hand rail.
The views are very nice and the history intresting with all kinds of visitors from individuals to school and family groups. We were there mid day in November and it was pretty hot so try to go in late afternoon or early morning. It is worth a visit.

“DIU Fort”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 October 2013

I visited DIU fort this weekend and it was lovely to visit it, but the fort is facing the apathy of non maintenance by Govt of India. Its sad to see as how the government machinery is slowly taking it towards ruins. The place does not have a proper toilet. The up keeping is very poor. Many of the cannons were lying in a dilapidated condition and require immediate attention. No historical information is available and its really good to know about the cannons and the Portuguese was with the sultan of Gujarat. Its litter every place inside the fort mainly with broken beer bottles and cans.
Let the government charge a petty amount and start protecting and up keeping the structure so that the future generations can also see it.
Best time to visit early morning or in the evening.
