“Could do better”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 March 2012

Just got back from an all inclusive 2 week stay at the Whispering Palms, Goa.
I must say it was not great.
Food, only average, mainly served as buffet and temperature allowed to go down to
just warm.
Drinks, only the very basic or cheap drinks offered as all inclusive, both red and white wine
were dreadful.
Rooms, we rejected our first room (that we paid to be up graded) a Grim, dark and old room
for a repainted small room, at least it was a little brighter.
Staff, reception staff were mostly very young trainees that struggled to assist you with all most every thing.
Surrounding Area, leaves a lot to be desired, bin bags and rubbish strewn almost every where, walking and particularly taxi rides border on dangerous.
Beach was nice but we were hounded through out the day by sellers, offering just about every thing you can imagine to buy, on average at least 50 per day.
Could not recommend Whispering Palms.

Room Tip: Make sure you have a re furbished / re painted room

Stayed here last year, our first trip back to Goa for over 18 years and it certainly reminded us why we used to come to Goa. The hotel is friendly enough but lacks room near the poolside bar and has no ambience at all at the indoor bar. The food was fantastic, tried so many different types of curry, most of which I had never heard of before but best of all were trips to the Al a Carte restaurant, excellent to say the least. The room we stayed in was very basic but was kept spotlessly clean. The hotel is in an excellent position in Candolim, the right side of the road to be within easy reach of the beach and is close to all of the shops and restaurants but is not affected too much by noise.

Just got back today from Whispering Palms, excellent hotel and service. Room was very basic but clean, although refurbished rooms are of very nice standard.
Would recommend to other holidaymakers, look forward to returning next year

Room Tip: Ask for refurbished room

The Whispering Palms is a lovely complex and when the full refurb happens I am sure it will be fabulous, the plans are. At the moment there are tired areas and the pool needs attention. The food was fantastic, we stayed for two weeks and apart from veg options, never ate the same thing twice. I agree there could have been some spicier options, but there were otpions for all palates, Chinese, Thai, Italian, Spanish, British, vegetarian and sumptuous salads! The complex and rooms were spotless, no mosquitos or cockroaches in sight, which is miraculous in such a hot climate. The staff were friendly and very helpful. We moved rooms after the first night due to noise and air conditioning units racket, we still didn't get a refurbished, but we saw one and it was lovely and modern. The entertainment let it down in my opinion. I went with my parents who are in their 60's but none of us were too keen on the entertainment. The same oldies sung almost daily by an indian guy, who was a bit out of tune, like our equivalent of Jim on the organ :)) The band was good and we even managed to get a couple of Hindi songs out of them which everyone seemed to enjoy and we danced to.....maybe there could be more of that. The hotel put on 3 special nights and really put their hearts into it, but apart from the food it wasn't spectacular. The a la carte restaurant was lovely and the food great but limited, would be better to have two menus to alternate for those staying more than 2 weeks. The British clientele were mostly over 60 and repeaters who seem to know each other and meet up every year, some stay for 7-8 weeks. I wouldn't recommend for children either Goa or the hotel as there's not much for them to do. It was nice when we could get a sunbed (up early towel on bed) to lie around the pool as you wouldn't be pestered by the hawkers. I found the hotel to be quite noisy with the traffic on the side street so avoid those rooms and the crows were a pain making a racket and pinching the food off your plate...lol
I rate the hotel on cleanliness, friendliness and food. I recommend the a la carte restaurant and the spa for a facial and threading. The tailors a bit old fashioned and the jeweller a waste of space. Get a room away from the street and the main building for less noise, we started in 107 + 108 then moved to 221 +223 which were all noisy.

Room Tip: ask for a refurbished, unless you have to pay extra. Hopefully they will have all been done by the t...

We returned on the 11th February 2012 after a four week stay at the Whispering Palms. We feel we must comment on a few points. This trip was a return visit for one of us after a 13 year gap, and a first time experience for the other. The hotel was OK ; tired and rundown, but the refurbishment plans for 2012, as displayed in the reception area look impressive. The service was good. The food excellent with a good choice at all meal times.
We were allocated a refurbished room and although not of a high standrard was modern and kept clean. The brochures and any research doesn't tell you about the piles of rubbish everywhere, and we mean everywhere. At regular intervals these piles are set on fire (including food waste and plastic bottles) so that plumes of acrid smoke fill the air. Why hasn't anyone mentioned the squarking crows ?? Although during the day when they were swooping in to pinch food etc ,they were very entertaining, the noise they made from dawn 'til dusk, which although didn't bother us, caused guests at this Hotel to ask to be moved. The beaches from Fort Aguada through Candolim, Calangute to Baga are filthy. We walked everyday on the beach having to beware of broken glass, srynges, dog dirt and general household waste. The "boat" has nearly been dismantled now. While we were there black bilge was being pumped into the sea adding to the mess on the beach. At one point the beach around Kingfisher Villa area looked like tarmac had been laid on the beach. The packs of dogs along the stretch of the beach can be very intimidating - you can tell the regular beach walkers ; they have sticks to fend off the dogs.( We aquired one during our regular walks!) Walk off the beach upon of the paths to the roadway ( past all the piles of rubbish) for a hair-raising way back. The road/footpaths are positvely dangerous. As well as having to negotiate the dogs, wandering cows and footpath hazards ( sometimes no footpath), you take your life in your hands when trying to either cross the road or walk in an area where the foorpath is non-existent because of the amount of manic traffic. If it wasn't scary it would be funny. This leads me to the new web pages for the Hotel - We think we stayed at a different Hotel with a different beach!!The photos shown now don't represent what we left behind ( especially the beach area) and can't be the proposed changes at the Hotel as that is to be a totally different layout. The people of Goa are lovely but what we witnessed and experienced has left us not wanting to return. If you do decide to go : don't go with MONARCH, they are not direct flights and if you pay for their Premier service you will be very disappointed.

Room Tip: ask for a refurbished room
