We had a lovely room or rooms - 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, kitchen and living room, 2 balconies. It was lovely to have so much space. The second bedroom only had a double bed, dressing table and bedside table, no wardrobe which would have been awkward if anymore than 2 people were staying there as the wardrobe in the first bedroom was only big enough for 2 people, the usual Goa size wardrobe. Our room overlooked the pool but we were on the top floor and had 60 steps to our room so wouldn't have suited some people. There was no problem with luggage though as the boys took it up there and brought it down again when we left. Breakfast was eaten around the pool, eggs anyway you liked them with toast and jam/marmalade. It was nice that the jam and marmalade were home made and not the bright red variety. The hotel was in a great position for restaurants and the staff were all lovely. Reception was very efficient. It was good that safety deposit boxes were provided free in a secure area as this saved a considerable amount of money on a 3 week holiday. The only thing we were disappointed with was the spa. We went for a manicure and pedicure and they didn't even have any nail polish remover and attempted to proceed to file my old nail polish off with a nail file much to my horror. It took them an hour just to file my toe nails and clean my feet. We promptly left after the nail polish removal attempt and definitely wouldn't go back. The girls on the beach do a much better job. There is a band on 2/3 times a week in the restaurant area.

Room Tip: Be aware some rooms have a lot of steps to them. We were on the 4th floor with 60 steps.

We went back in December for a fortnight and we stayed in block 2 which was fantastic, the pool boy provided really good service, defiantly will be back.Drinks are more expensive than the shacks or main restaurants, but at approximately £1.00 for a large spirit including a can of mixer in the resort and £2.00 in the hotel not much to grumble about. Also the samos boys come round on their bikes most of the day with fresh bread and delicious samoas for about 10 rupees (85 to the £1) can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: Ask for block 2 or three as these are at the back of the hotel also you can request a room over look...

This is our 3rd stay at the HB and a very enjoyable one too. We were lucky and got one of the 2 bedroomed rooms which are huge, with 2 balconies, room no 1103 1st floor, overlooks car park but its a very small quiet car park so no worries, overlooks pretty gardens at the back.
Breakfast adequate eggs any way you like, not keen on the coffee there so didn't bother with that. Staff were always helpful.
We didn't use the pool until the last day but there are 7 to choose from
I like the location of this hotel, my only negative is that it is just too big for me, I like smaller properties , but like I said 3rd stay there and no complaints whatsoever.

My 15yr old daughter and I stayed at the highland the first 2 weeks of December. I had requested a pool view on their face book site and was told reception would be made aware, (didn't happen ) the complex is HUGE so I guess the standards of rooms will be very different, we had a room on the top floor right at the back of the old complex. No lifts could be a problem for some. The stair way was dirty stained walls and filthy ledges, the room spacious, basic, air-con in the bed room didn't work ceiling fans did, fridge had previous occupants left overs and was rusty inside and out, widow ledges and top of the fridge filthy!
The rest of the room however was cleaned daily bedding towels changed everyday :-)
The other guests and residents where mostly retired, not enough beds by the pools, not child/teenager friendly. The food in the restaurant was poor compared to that of the bars and shacks outside .
The walk to the beach from our room was a mile at least, not a few hundred meters as advertised.
If its just a base you want its ok, I wont be using this hotel again

We had a stay in Palolem in huts called Big Fish, we paid less than £10 a night for a hut with hot shower, its right on the beach and the food was lovely, beach beautiful, views amazing, made our holiday, will go back their for sure!!

We stayed at Highland Beach five years ago and returned for second time over Xmas and New Year. Our room although basic was adequate and we received clean towels each day although our cleaner changed blocks during our second week and I suspect the standards the new cleaner would have given us would not have been as good.
We found the reception staff , particularly Agnelo Almeida, very helpful when my husband had a medical problem and they all inquired daily as to how he was doing.
We always exchanged our sterling or travelers cheques at The Happy Haven shop which is just up the road from the Hotel as it offered better rates. The owner is Bosco and he is a delightful man and was so helpful when my husband was unwell. We would recommend his little shop for most items he sells and he has a good knowledge of the area which he is happy to share.
On the opposite side is Savios Bar. This is a new bar but is ideally placed when returning to the Hotel. The food is excellent and the staff are again very helpful and pleasant.
Candolim has changed during these last five years but is still a great place to be based. Our one disappointment was when we visited the shack called The Rovers Return on Calangute beach. Last time we were there the food and service was exceptional and when you ordered suckling pig you actually got a pig...... it was delicious so back we went this time expecting the same. We ordered suckling pig for our Xmas night meal and turned up expecting the same as we had had five years previous but were very disappointed to find it was a portion of pig. It was dry and not to the standard we had previously had and the service was poor. Thinking that it was possibly because it was Xmas night our friends tried a meal there again a few days later but again were very disappointed in both food and service. We will not visit here again in any future visits.
On a final note if you want any clothes made we would highly recommend Mac, the Tailor. He has a shop in Calangute in the reception area of the Nizmar Hotel. The clothes he makes for you are of excellent quality and reasonably priced. Worth paying a visit too.

Room Tip: Avoid block above kitchens

We've been to Candolim before and loved every minute of it. I'd definately suggest going to Candolim before it gets really spoilt with even more tourism - it seems to be getting busier every year - but we just want to share some of our experiences which left us a bit disappointed with our hotel. We were unable to get our previous hotel but after looking at the reviews of the Highland we were quite happy to book here. Unfortunately there seems to be a vast difference in the standards of the rooms - and the service we were given. Of course things might not be as we would expect at home but there is no excuse for cleanliness and service. We had several issues with our initial room which was above the kitchen and eventually after a few trips to reception and offering to speak to our rep we managed to get a quieter room at the rear of the complex. This is big expanding hotel and it seems to have gotten a bit too big for the staff/housekeeping to manage. One of our party, in another room, was without a towel for 3 days despite 5 requests to both housekeeping and eventually the duty manager - these were met with promises of 5 minutes and a lukewarm reception - she eventually gave up and on her last day used a t shirt to dry with. We were without towels - luckily we had our own beach towel - but again stuggled to get clean towels as they said they were a bit short of them ( maybe because of the large pile of dirty laundry we walked past for 2 days in our stair well.) Our other main issue with the hotel was the cleanliness of the rooms. The least said about the state of the fridge the better - really rusty and mildewed inside. To be fair housekeeping did come to the room each day but our fridge was restocked with opened, part empty, bottles of water which were too easy to confuse with our own. On a positive note all of the bar staff were brilliant and very helpful .

Apart from the issues with the hotel we had a brilliant holiday. The sunburn festival was on while we were there which was fine and it was just really busy - quite a few hectic traffic jams along the way. We'd done quite a few of the main trips before so we spent more time walking around the whole area - the fort is worth a look especially at sunset. New year on the beach was a brilliant experience - a massive party atmosphere with a real mix of young, older, single groups and families - loads of fire works at the bells!

We've had jewellery made at different jewellers before but for exceptional quality in both workmanship and gemstones I can highly recommend 'BK jewellers' which is next to the Stonehouse resturant on the main road. They are more focussed on quailty and craftmanship than some of the others and will provide the best quaility they can within your budget as well as friendly, no pressure service.

As I said we had a great time but next time we'll try again for the smaller Sunset Beach hotel which was spotlessly clean with a great customer focus. Hopes this helps :-)

Room Tip: If you are offered a room near the main reception (Block 608) do not accept it! The room we were off...

Just spent 10 nights here over christmas. We have stayed at this hotel 7 or 8 times perviously and always enjoyed it. I was worried beforehand that the hotel had been down graded to a 2 star from a 3 star but i need not have worried. This is an ideal base. The rooms are spacious with a seperate large living room (ideal as my husband is a night owl!) Our cleaner kept everywhere spotless and was very friendly.
The walk to the beach takes approx 10 minutes. There are loads of beach shacks from where you can get decent food and plentiful drink. One night we decided to stay on the beach for the evening and have a meal. The cost for the whole day (drinks, lunch, dinner, sunbed) was £20. You would be lucky to get a sunbed and umbrella in europe for that price!
On our way to the airport coming home, we discovered that my husband had left his coat with money in it in the wardrobe in our room. Our friends who are staying up the road from the hotel went the next morning to explain our plight. Imagine our surprise when they located the coat and the money was still in the pocket. We thought we had no chance of getting the coat back let alone the money. Cannot praise this hotel highly enough. Thank you to the honest employee. Will stay here again.
