A beautifully restored old charm hotel, with very beautiful, large rooms. The food was perfect (go for the Uttaparam for breakfast, you won't be disappointed!) Service was discrete and helpful. And the place is a lovely large building you can walk around in. We had a fantastic deluxe Thali on the roof top lit by firelight. Wonderful!

Room Tip: Room 4 has a swing seat.

I stayed 2 nights and it was just amazing. They have different quiet areas to chill with your book and leave behind the caos from the streets. Rooms are very well decorated. A few restaurant options within the hotel. Would recomend this place for sure. The only bad thing was the noise. During the nights is was quite noisy until around 12pm, I think we had a kitchen very close to the room. But my other collegues complained too, so I guess you should bring earplugs.

Right in the middle of the chaotic old city of Ahmedabad is a haven of calm efficiency and peace provided by the Heritage hotel of the House of MG. Built in the 1920’s as the home of a major Ahmedabad businessman, it was later converted into a hotel of some individual distinction. Rooms are structured from what appears to a western tourist to be a rambling multi-story plan. There are only 18 rooms and I suspect all differ in some way, mostly in terms of size of the suite. Individual suites seem to be in all sorts of nooks around the central well of the old living area. Access is difficult for disabled as there stairs at many levels, plus the disconcerting slight changes in floor level as you step through archways. Room 14 and 15 are at the back of the house and thereby one gets some relief from Ahmedabad traffic noise and from the 6am muezzuin call at the Siddi Sayyid’s mosque opposite the front of the hotel (though earplugs were provided – useful to take a night eye-shade with you as inevitably, light gets into rooms). Suite quality was very good, clean (though decoration was slightly shabby) comprising a central sitting out area (with multiple armchairs and sofa) and separate bedroom (big King-sized bed, though this varies via Suite, several pillows and clean crisp bedding) and separate bathroom. All internal areas could be separated by doors, though the bathroom could have used some further subdivision of toilet from shower and washbasin. Washing aids were plentiful and clean towels provided daily. As ever the range of electric switches is challenging though all switchboards (one in each room) usually have a single isolator switch by way of total blackout (then you see the ambient light coming in from outside). There were lots of potential charging plugs, a big wall mounted TV and endless DVD’s available. The hotel reception was efficient and pleasant (though acceptance of traveller’s cheques now seem to be a thing of the past - luckily there are several international ATMs near the hotel). Bags appeared in the room before we were even allowed in. Food is available in either of two restaurants in the building. The Green House Café is in the front entrance court yard and provides excellent value in Gujarat snacks and meals (it has an a/c extension room, but note a 15% surcharge on the bill if you use this room – it also doubles as the breakfast room). There is reputably an excellent terrace restaurant specialising in Thali-type food, upstairs in MG, supposedly very superior, but I did not try it out. Staff were usually excellent – distinctive clean clothing, courteous and attentive, though do not necessarily expect breakfast to start at the stated 7am (good choice of food). There is some slowness in that staffing area, which management needs to catch up on. In brief, an excellent Heritage hotel to use in Ahmedabad, and one which I would come back to – lets hope the breakfast has speeded up by then!

Room Tip: Ask for a suite at the rear of the hotel to lessen traffic noise.

Encouraged by the many good reviews and the interesting descriptions on the hotels website,
we booked a suite at the HOMG on a recent visit to Ahmedabad.

Prices are high. At check out, the hotel gave us a discount voucher for a future visit. Do we want to come back? I think not.

The plus points:
This is a beautifully restored haveli (heritage mansion) , aesthetically laid out with a series of courtyards, period furniture and antique pieces . Our suite room was huge with high ceilings, tastefully decorated with antique look pieces except for the sofa set which had cheap white cloth covers that did not match the heritage look. The bathroom was modern and large. The hot water is solar, so you need to run the tap a while to get it going. The bedroom had a typical Gujarati jhoola (swing) ..... and an unnecessary ceiling mirror!

Negative points:
The bedroom was exceedingly noisy, all the honking from the streets came through loud and clear till late into the night. Inadequate natural lighting in the rooms during the day, and too much outside light coming into the room at night, with no curtains for the glazed colour upper window panes. My sleep was badly disturbed with the noise and the light. This is a big minus point and just not acceptable for such high priced rooms.

There is no lift - for those who have difficulty climbing stairs. Most of the rooms are on higher floors.

The hotel has no room service, again not acceptable for the steep rates.

The hotel has two restaurants. We did not try the Gujarati thali rooftop restaurant as we were "thali'ed out" by the time. The chaat in the ground floor noisy road facing eatery was nondescript, though the light meal we had was quite satisfactory, and I did noticed a lot of people relishing the various fried farsans (savoury snacks). Breakfast was just okay, included in the room rate. Service in the restaurant was courteous.

We were told that our TV would not work during our stay due to planned maintenance. Again, not acceptable for the steep room rate.

At check out, we were asked to pay an extra one rupee instead of their rounding off the bill. Not a big deal but the attitude was cheap considering the high room rate.

The hotel is not well located. Apart from the disturbing noise, just crossing the busy road without getting run over, was a nightmare.

Overall, this did not live up to our expectations. It was a disappointing stay and certainly not value for money.

I visited House of MG for the second time with a group of 15 people and as a coordinator of the group, experienced such peace to get things done. All I had to do is tell the staff what I wanted and it was arranged so beautifully without me having to follow up. It was such a wonderful time in the beautiful and royal rooms. The food at Green house and Agashiye was WOW!!! I kind of felt like a princess!!!!!

I miss House of MG already!!!

Thank you dear team at House of MG!

Hats Off!!

House of MG was a fantastic find and i cannot imagine there is a better place to stay in Ahmedabad (and it was so good that it may even be a reason to come to the city). This hotel is oozing with charm and character. The rooms are some of the most pleasant i have ever stayed in, anywhere. Large, extremely tastefully decorated and fitted-out, a huge balcony/interior-exterior sitting area, comfortable beds (although a tad small in our twin room), and just had an old-world colonial charm about them that gave the place a really positive atmosphere. The only real negative (and its not very serious) is that the bathrooms, especially the toilet, could be slightly newer/better-kept. The common areas are well-maintained and the front-desk staff were helpful and knowledgeable. The rooftop restaurant is very pleasant but the 'famed' Thali on offer was a bit confusing and whilst the food was of good quality it wasnt that good, especially as we had no idea what we were eating and there was no member of staff with English remotely good enough to explain what everything was.

What really made the whole experience that much more special was the hotel guide (Sayed). Aside from being one of the best local guides i have had anywhere in the world, he was extremely helpful, informed, interesting, and had a certain wisdom to him that is oh so rare.

This hotel is quirky and bursting with personality - highly recommended.

In January we stayed several nights at the "House of MG". The rooms were large and comfortable, albeit a tad shabby, the service was good, and the food was excellent. The Hotel is well located and the charges were reasonable.
In summary, it was a very pleasant stay.
However, the highlight of our visit was provided by the services of our Guide, Avni.
She is a particularly courteous and highly intelligent woman with appropriate tertiary qualifications.
Avni possessed a great love and we were enthralled by her commprehensive knowledge of the city.
We have been to India many times over the past 30 years, and we found her services truly exceptional and we could not recommend her more highly.
If you desire to retain her services, her email address is avni.varia@gmail.com
