Gir Birding Lodge is tucked away amidst sprawling Kesar mango orchards that border the famous Sasan Gir Wild life sanctuary, the last refuge if the Asatic Lion, in Gujarat.

As you enter the sylvan serene surroundings, the metallic trill of bird songs fill the air. Feathered friends of all sizes shapes and colours flit in and out as the swoop to drink nectar from the colourful flowers or have a dip in the terra cotta bird baths!

Even the independent cottages are imaginatively named after birds-- Minivet, Fantial, Pitta, to name a few. The cottages are air conditioned, well furnished and neatly maintained. The verandah is the perfect place to soak in the sights and sounds of the forest. The alarm call of a spotted deer and Sambhar, the roar of a lion, and the growl of a leopard are impossible to miss!

The friendly and courteous staff and amazing food that tastes just like home cooked food-- make it a perfect get away for city weary folks! My team and I were there last week-- and trust me, none of us wanted to leave!

In Gir, do not look further and head to Gir Birding Lodge. Advantage of the place is the location, it shares compound wall with National Park. There is definite chance of spotting animals and birds.
With the name, the management has also taken steps that there are lot of birds in the vicinity.

The sounds of peacock and other birds wake you up. There are also definite chances of hearing lion roaring sounds.

The other thing that is to be mentioned is the service. We reached there in the night without booking. They made sure we get sufficient food for dinner. You get food all around the times. Not to forget it is really sumptuous and delicious.

A definite recommended place.

Just spend three nights at the place

The staff was friendly and helpful as always in India
The food was good and plentiful
The cottage was functional but very basic. No housekeeping during the stay. No hot water at the washbasin for e.g, shaving.

All in all a very mixed experience

I booked the lodge for two days on 24th and 25th Feb'14 for two standard rooms. It is a nice, clean and peaceful place. Though there is no TV and newspaper, it added more peace. The food is very good and home made style, non spicy and non oily with enough variety. The hospitality is good. The boy Rahul is charming among

Room Tip: Prefer AC rooms as the place is hot

Basic 2 star rooms but spacious, hot showers and tea/coffee making facilities.food very good, staff very polite and helpful. Room fans.
Advantage for bird watchers are the balconies and roof terrace that overlook the mango groves. Excellent birding and photography in grounds. While we were there we saw a golden jackal in the grounds.

Room Tip: All rooms are set on the edge of the mango groves so birdlife is everywhere.

We really enjoyed our three night stay here. We had booked two deluxe cottages and found them to be very clean and comfortable. The manager and staff were extremely friendly and accommodating, when I mentioned that my husband had could not eat wheat they brought bajri ( pearl millet ) flour specially for him and made delicious bajra rotlas for him everyday. The food was simple but very tasty.
The lodge is located right next to one of the gates of Gir park. We heard some animal calls at night, could not make out if they were deer, jackal or hyena calls. Next afternoon while strolling through the mango orchard we saw a jackal. We were told that at nights it was not uncommon to see hyenas in the orchard, in fact one night the manger had seen lions just outside the hotel gates !
We had booked our stay and safaris through Asian Adventures ( who own this property ) and they really took very good care of us. We had some fantastic sightings of lions and a leopard, apart from numerous birds.

Stayed December 2013, travelled with family
