“Better than the English Tombs”
Reviewed 2 May 2014

The Dutch Cemetery tombs are slightly better worked than the English tombs and its wonderful to see the confluence of architectural styles reflected in the structures. The tombs have Angels and Saints carved into them juxtpaosed with text written in Persian.

The gate may seem shut when you arrive, take the little narrow street on the left of the main gate, there is a second gate up that street that will be open

“ill maintained but worth a visit”
Reviewed 21 February 2014

the cemetry compound was closed, bolted from inside. when i inquired around, there was a small back entry used by the guard. so, the advice is "dont go away if you see it closed, ask around".
it was very poorly maintained, in worse state than the english one. the armenian cemetery is in the same compound, on the right side.
the inscriptions on tombstones are much more clearly visible in armenian ones. most have used white marbles as tombstones but i saw some wooden ones too.
the guard showed me an underground tunnel that once reached tapi river banks. one of the buildings was better preserved than others and had beautiful carvings, wooden plaques and some surviving art inside it.
people living just 100 metres away are oblivious of its presence, use google maps etc. they have perfect location marked.

“awesome”

Just superb. Rivalry between Dutch and English to impress the local and show /prove superiority and power. Overall , lots and lots of history. ASI must save and promote this place.

“When the dead return”
Reviewed 25 December 2011

A place you must visit. I've lived in surat for four years now and it was just some time back that I visited this spot. It's located at a place where it won't take you much to miss it. Took me around an hour to find it as no one knows the location.

It's a National heritage site!! But the maintenance is pathetic, to say the least. The wall at the entrance has transformed into a urinal...err...i hoped it was just that.

But when you enter, it's just like entering into a door taking you a thousand years back. The graves and the inscriptions would put a history museum to shame. A must visit if you're visiting Surat.

P.S. The watchman looks creepy...looking at him smile alone at the graves was indeed..err...well..creepy.
