We drove down in the morning of 5th October 2013 from Naldehra to Tattapani on dual mission. First, the river rafting and second the hot sulphur spring bath . The drive from Naldehra was downhill and pleasant with panoramic views of valleys , mountains and forests.
About 12 kms before Tattapani one could spot jeeps ,with rafts on top, waiting for the customers for river rafting. We selected one river rafting provider around 6 kms before Tattapani. We did a 6 km rafting trip on the Sutlaj in the magnificent crystal clear waters refreshing us with cold waters during the ride. Rapids were O.K. And then we hired a private bathroom in Hotel Hot Springs and Spa at Tattapani and soaked ourselves in the hot sulphur spring of the area. Although there are free baths near the river banks but they are often crowded by the local people .The hot sulphur water has great healing properties and is really great for skin. We had lunch at Hotel Hot Sprigs & Spa which was quite good . After enjoying thoroughly ,we headed back for Naldehra in the afternoon .
If one is staying in Shimla, Mashobara or Naldehra and is fond of adventure and nature , one should visit Tattapani for water rafting and hot sulphur spa.
Cost for Rafting Rs. 500 approx.per pax - you can bargain further.
Cost for Hot Spring Spa - Rs. 250 per pax .

Going to Tattapaani is an ideal one day get away from Shimla. The drive takes you down the Satluj Valley through the beautiful villages of Naldhera on towards Tatta Paani where you will participate in two activities making it ideal. First do a 7 km rafting trip on the Satluj in the nice crystal cler waters refreshing you down to your bone marrow. And then hire a private bathroom in one of the hotels near the end point and soak yourself in the hot sulfur spring of the area. There are free baths as well but they are often crowded by the local villagers who just love them. This water has great healing properties and is really great for skin and the hair both. After that one can head back to Shimla spending an hour at the sunset point of the Naldehra Golf Course. For me the highlight were the beautiful sand beaches , the amazing stones in the river bed, good birds and a company of a beloved friend.

I did the 6km short stretch river rafting on the Sutlej River . The rafting starts 6 km from Tattapani and ends at hot springs of Tattapani. There is also a 12 km rafting available.

The river is relatively calm with mild rapids so kids could enjoy too. Also doing it for the first time, it was relatively non scary and highly enjoyable rowing .

The passing over the rapids is an awesome feeling and there was a stretch where the main raftsman told us we could swim if we wanted to. The water was freezing cold even in peak summer(Month of May) as it comes from the Himalayas and I came back onto the raft with the same alacrity as I got in the water!!

The total rafting time takes around 30 minutes for the 6 kms.. but you have to travel a long way from Shimla. The icing on the cake is that you can spend time at the hot water springs of Sutlej.
There are also resorts which channel the hot water spring so you can have a private pool for yourself . There are different packages available which include rafting/private hot water spring/food etc.. you can check with the hotel before booking for whatever is convenient.

The route is Tattapani from Shiimla is extremely scenic and also has enough bends to cause mountain sickness so prepare before your trip.

Most of the rafts need an optimum number of people before they can leave ... so if you are a family of 3-4 you would need to wait for 2 more folks.. and the wait time can be sometimes irritating . Luckily we were the ones to complete an already waiting group!!

The total travel time from Shimla,Rafting, Hot water Springs at Tattapani, Food and back can easily be upwards of 4 hours. Plan a whole day.

We were quite eager to see the hot springs at this place, but were disappointed after a 2 hour drive. The place is recommended though for people who want to experience river rafting. You can book your ride on the way to Tattapani. The water levels were low in Oct, but can be very exciting during peak levels.

There are couple of eating places nearby.

Situated 50 ksm from Shimla, Tattapani is a locality on the banks of river Sutlej. The place is famous for it hot water springs. Hot water containing sulphur gushes out of the river banks and meets the chilly Sutlej water at the magical sandy banks. The place hasn't seen much commercialization and human 'invasion', and hence is a perfect getaway for a peaceful weekend. There is one high end resort and an economic hotel for lodging needs for people from all walks of life. White water rafting on the river is a thrilling experience. Don't miss out on that.
A bonfire with a few friends beside the river could make it night to remember for the rest of your lives. :)
