“Must visit place to learn about contemprary & experimental architechture”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 January 2014

A tip to the travellers, there are stone tablets placed before every monument, please take a couple of minutes to read them and then enter the respective temple, you will be able to appreciate the beauty and nuances better, Well maintained places and ASI has done a fantastic job of maintaining this place. Also don't miss the ASI museum which has a lot of idols recovered from the ruins. There are also a lot of ASI heritage series books in the museum which explains about each of these places in detail, as you are already there, you wont be able to get the bemefit of the books, but you can pass it on to your friends or use it for "next time"......Limited food options, need to pack & bring from Badami if neccessary, and also get a little hot during the day, hence try and plan your visit early in the day or later in the evening.....

Overall a not to be missed place

“CRADLE OF SOUTH INDIAN STONE TEMPLE ARCHITECTURE”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 January 2014

This is supposed to be 'The' place where building stone temples, especially in the South Indian style evolved and flourished. Though very few temples remain intact now, a lot of temples built by 'students' - most of them about 1,500 years ago - can be seen all around this village. To see the evolution, you have go here first, then Pattadakal and later Badami. Better to hire an accredited guide.

“Less compared to pattadakal”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 January 2014

* It will take 2-4 hrs to visit all monuments in Aihole but will not take more than an hr to see the fenced set of monuments
* Can be covered in a single trip from Badami "Pattadakal-Aihole"
* For better Food have in badami itself and or get it packed before starting to this place
* Museum is there, its small compared to other museums in india

“Place where south Indian Temple Architecture Started”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 December 2013

In one sentence this is the place where South Indian Temple Architecture started. Aihole was the Capital of the first two Chaluka kings. Here you can see the experiments of the pioneers of the South Indian Temple Architecture. One temple with two Garbha-Griha(Sanctum Santorium), and south facing temple entrance. An Model home with 3 rooms and Kitchen was my favourite. This place is about 125 kms from Hospet. If you are Hospet to see Hampi, budget one more day to see Aihole, padatkal and Badami caves.

“Unesco Heritage site”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 December 2013

Just 11 kms from Pattadkal, Aihole is a protected site acclaimed as the cradle of Hindu temple architecture. Three main temples dominate the landscape 1. Durga Temple 2. Ladkhan Temple and 3. Huchimalli Temple are a big draw for tourists from across the country. There is an archaeological musuem worth visiting to learn of the history, architecture of the temples. A couple of hours browsing through the sculptures and reading up the history is the only way to make the visit a learning experience. The complex is well maintained.
